POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) Poway's mayor is responding to critics who are slamming him for how he handled the recent boil water advisory. Nearly 200 businesses were forced to close for six days over fears that the water might have been contaminated during recent storms. Tuesday morning, a group calling itself "The East County Coalition for Clean Water" held a news conference at Lake Poway.The members are from the Helix and Lakeside Water Districts, and one is from the San Diego County Water Authority. The regional water officials said they'd been getting calls from constituents worried about their water supply, which was not affected by the boil water advisory. "The mishandling of the Poway contamination incident erodes the confidence of the public of all the water boards," said Lakeside Water District Member Frank Hilliker, who said he was speaking as a private citizen and not in an official capacity.Hilliker said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus was "asleep at the wheel." "The buck stops with the mayor of Poway, and he was slow to react," said Hilliker. Hilliker also said it was irresponsible for the mayor to say he was continuing to drink the water before testing was complete.Mayor Vaus said he wouldn't do anything differently. "I told people I was drinking water. I did drink the water. I gave it to my pets, cause I knew and I repeatedly said, all of our tests were fine. "All 4 or 5 people who were listed on the press release are supporting my opponent in the county supervisor race, an opponent who is in desperate straights according to the polling," said Vaus.When reporters asked Hilliker if he was supporting Anderson, he insisted the news conference was about public safety."How is that relevant to public safety? (KGTV) -- Two brothers have been arrested in a string of North County burglaries that occurred earlier this year, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.On June 11, Daron Davon Turner, 38, and his half-brother, Daren Tyrone Turner, 25, were arrested in Poway for the burglaries.Authorities say an investigation connected the brothers to multiple residential burglaries. After searching several locations in Los Angeles County, authorities found several stolen guns related to the case.Daron is currently facing 10 felony counts of burglary while Daren faces five felony counts of burglary. Turner’s mother, girlfriend and uncle also have possible connections to the case.Their cases have been submitted to the District Attorney’s office, authorities say. (KGTV) — Poway officials expressed shock Wednesday over a potential state fine after a water system failure that has led to a water boil advisory.The city is now in the fifth day of the precautionary water boil advisory after residents reported brownish water coming out of their faucets on Saturday. Poway has ordered restaurants to close, and is now handing out free crates of bottled water at multiple locations, including City Hall.On Wednesday, Sean Sterchi, of the state Water Resources Control Board, said he anticipates the state will fine the city for failing to protect its system from storm water. Sterchi told 10News Poway's system, built in the 1960s, is an old design that doesn't meet current standards. "In fact, in the more than 50 years the facility has been in operation and under regular inspection by the state, the city has never been made aware of a compliance issue of this nature," the statement said. On Wednesday, the city announced a third round of tests that showed no issues with chlorine, bacteria, or clarity.
