SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A suspicious backpack prompted a bomb squad response downtown Tuesday afternoon. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. just outside the federal building on the 800 block of Front Street. Authorities say a security guard at the building saw a man acting suspiciously before tossing a military backpack into a planter. After using special equipment to examine the bag, the bomb squad found only personal items inside the bag. The FBI said it sent agents to the scene, but that the "matter is being led by Federal Protective Services." 596

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 27 years, Mysterious Galaxy, a popular sci-fi bookstore in the Clairemont area, may have to close its doors.In a post on the store's website, the owners say they are looking for a buyer to take over the store on Balboa Avenue and move it, as their lease expires in 60 days. "It is with heavy hearts that we share that unless a new buyer and new location are found immediately, Mysterious Galaxy will be forced to close its doors," reads the post.Manager Kelly Orazi says it's "devastating" to see the store shut down.RELATED: Sears, Kmart stores slated for closure in months ahead, company says"We're a hub for people who love books," she says. "(People) Who love reading, who love writing. It's really something special."If it closes, Mysterious Galaxy will join a handful of other small, locally-owned bookstores to close recently in San Diego.In 2018, Villainous Lair shut its doors, as did the Adams Avenue Bookstore. Experts say it's because shoppers are looking for a more personal, intimate experience than what they can get online or at a major retail chain.That's what Diesel Bookstore is hoping to capitalize on. That store just opened at the end of October in the Del Mar Highlands mall."We offer bestsellers, but we also offer a curated selection of books in every subject manner," says Manager Iris Halperin. "People want an experience that's different, that's fun, that's unique. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An online petition is growing among San Diego State University students who feel they should be partially reimbursed for tuition and other campus fees because of the pandemic. SDSU senior Kelsey Santin created the petition on Change.org Monday night. Since then, the petition has received over 3,000 signatures. Santin argues that since the way of learning has changed, so should the amount they have to pay. She also says they're paying for campus fees for services they aren't able to access on campus. SDSU started the school year with limited in-person classes and returned to all online learning after hundreds of students tested positive for COVID-19.ABC 10News reached out to SDSU for comment and a spokesperson referred us to the CSU System. A spokesperson from CSU says the money for tuition covers instruction, which students are still receiving online. Campus-based mandatory fees for things like the health center and advising are still available in a virtual format. Other mandatory fees, the spokesperson says, are fees that fund facilities that are often of a result of student referendums voted and approved by students, for things like construction or renovation of a facility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Ahead of their games in San Diego, the Harlem Globetrotters took to the USS Midway Museum to make some trick shots.Several of the team’s players, TNT Maddox, El Gato Melendez and Zeus McClurkin took three shots in a row to a hoop on the flight deck below.This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Globetrotters performing for U.S. troops around the world.TNT is only the 9th female in the team’s history.The Globetrotters will play two games at the Valley View Casino Center Friday, February 16 and Friday February 23.Watch the video of the tricks in the player below: 598

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 86-year-old man was killed crossing the street in Mira Mesa Thursday night, police say. According to San Diego Police, the crash occurred on Mira Mesa Boulevard and Aderman Avenue just before 7 p.m. Thursday. Police say the man was using a crosswalk against a red light when he was struck by a 52-year-old woman driving a 2009 Lexus sedan. The man died at the scene and the driver, who police say stayed at the scene, was uninjured. Drugs or alcohol aren’t suspected in the crash. 512
