ESCONDIDO (KGTV) -- Escondido police arrested a man with prior criminal convictions Thursday after they found him passed out in his vehicle wearing a ballistic vest and loaded rifle magazines in his front passenger seat. He also had other weapons and police gear he'd allegedly stolen from a law enforcement officer in San Diego, authorities said.According to a release from Escondido Police Department, officers found the man after a caller reported him passed out around 1:10 a.m. outside the 7-Eleven on West Ninth Avenue. The caller said the man was likely under the influence of drugs and did not respond to attempts at waking him.When officers arrived on scene, they recognized the man as 30-year-old Thomas Vann, who has prior criminal convictions. He was wearing a ballistic vest with loaded rifle magazines that were "plainly visible" on the front passenger seat.Officers were able to wake Vann and detain him. They searched his vehicle and found four fully loaded rifle magazines, 126 rounds of rifle and shotgun ammunition, and stolen police gear, including a tactical vest, a duty belt, a medical kit, and handcuffs. Officers determined the police gear was stolen Wednesday from a law enforcement officer in San Diego. They also found 392 grams of methamphetamine and 78 grams of heroin.Vann was arrested and booked into the Vista Detention Facility on numerous drugs, weapons, and stolen property charges. 1426

ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) — Law enforcement agencies all around San Diego are working to find out if there are any more overdoses tied to mysterious blue pills that killed four people in East County this week. The pills are advertised as having a "painkiller high."An Encinitas mother, Lisa Nava was watching 10News this morning when she found out about the mysterious blue pills. She recognized them as the same pills her son took before he died three months ago.The memories of her son make her laugh. But the way he died brings Nava to tears. "Your biggest job in your life is to protect your child. I couldn't protect mine," Nava cried.Last year, her son Alex Morgan Nava had a skateboarding accident. He broke his knee, then his ankle. Doctors prescribed him oxycodone for this pain. Little did he know that would lead to an opioid addiction that would eventually kill him. On April 5, 2019, her Alex died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 24 years old. The last three months have been hell for the Nava family. But Friday morning, she saw a particular report on 10News. It was 10News anchor Virginia Cha saying, "Deputies connected some blue pills to the deaths of four people and just 24 hours."She immediately recognized the "blue pills." They were the same pills she confiscated from her son earlier this year. "I had to flush them down the toilet, and that was in January. They were those M-30's. The blue pills," Nava vividly remembered. Since then, the Nava family worked together to help Alex. They took him to the emergency room on multiple occasions. They sent him to a 30-day rehab facility. But Alex was too hooked. "He just made a wrong turn and couldn't turn around. He ran out of time," Nava said. His cause of death was 'Acute polydrug intoxication: Combined effects of acetaminophen and fentanyl-- The tiniest dose of one of the deadliest drugs."We thought he would be one of the lucky ones. But we didn't know that we were dealing with fentanyl," Nava cried.According to the Health and Human Services, around 130 people in America die of opioid overdoses every day. Alex is now one of them. But Nava says your loved one does not have to be if you are vigilant."You never know the last time you were going to see your child," Nava said. "Even the best most advantage children fall victim to these addictions. Check in on them. It's not anything to be casual about. This is an emergency."10News asked all the neighboring law enforcement agencies to see if they found any cases of Blue pill overdoses or deaths. Most of them said they are looking into it. Ethan Couch, known for his "affluenza" defense in his deadly drunk driving case, was released from a Texas jail Monday after serving nearly two years behind bars for violating his probation.Couch, 20, first made headlines as a teenager when he was sentenced to probation for a drunken driving crash that killed four people and seriously injured two others.Prosecutors in that 2013 case sought 20 years in jail, but Couch received no prison time after a psychologist testified that Couch was a victim of "affluenza," a product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for him.The decision by the juvenile court judge to put him on probation for 10 years outraged victims' families and anti-drunk driving advocates.In 2015, Couch violated the terms of his probation and fled to Mexico with his mother, Tonya Couch. They were found and sent back to the US, where a Texas judge ordered nearly two years of jail time for Couch.Mothers Against Drunk Driving described the two years Couch has spent in jail as "a grave injustice to the victims and their families.""The 720 days Ethan Couch served for his crimes shows that drunk driving homicides still aren't treated as the violent crimes that they are," the organization said in a statement. It vowed to keep monitoring the case because it "brought to light that there is so much more work to be done to hold drunk drivers accountable."As part of Couch's current probation, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor, an alcohol detecting patch, submit to drug testing, abide by a 9 p.m. curfew and have a video interlock ignition device installed in his vehicle, according to Mike Simonds of the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office.Couch's mother is currently facing charges of money laundering and hindering apprehension of a felon for helping her son flee to Mexico. (KGTV) - A series of unfortunate events may have led to an albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" disappearing from a North County museum. Officials with the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido believe Lemony disappeared on April 29 during a tour of the museum's Arthropod Jungle. During the tour, staff took Lemony out of its cage to show guests, before returning it to its enclosure and locking the gate.Unfortunately, a security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was damaged that same day and did not capture what could have happened.Staff said they fear the snake may have been stolen. They told 10News a man in his 20s left the tour group and never returned shortly before the snake disappeared."We are all heartbroken, and just want him safely returned, no questions asked," the museum said of Facebook. The snake was rescued four-and-a-half years ago in San Diego from an owner who had neglected it.Lemony is about 7-feet long, and yellow and orange, and has a scar on its face.Anyone with any information as to the snake's whereabouts is asked to call EcoVivarium at 760-975-9690.The situation is similar to another missing reptile case recently in North San Diego County."Bubbles" the monitor lizard slinked away from Mike's Pets in Spring Valley in March. Mike Estevez, of the store, said getting the word out was key in Bubbles' return."It really helped a lot," Estevez said.
