SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Extended construction work next to Friars Road has drivers wondering when the Mission Valley street will be back to normal.What is normally a four-lane road is now two, as SANDAG completes an million project. Crews are taking out a bridge with one track on it and replacing it with three bridges and four tracks. Two tracks will serve the Coaster and heavy freight trains. The other tracks are for the blue line trolley to La Jolla. “Every day that I have to pass this, it's just an eyesore,” said Katherine Whitley, who has spent two years driving through construction. “It clogs traffic. Everybody knows Friars Road has grown and grown and this isn't the right place for this to be.”RELATED: Gas main break prompts SR-163 closure in Mission ValleyBicyclists are also concerned about construction danger.“The cars going that way are passing me going 55 miles an hour about three feet away from me. So it feels pretty sketchy,” said Greg Zackowski.SANDAG said it is doing everything it can to minimize the impact of construction. The equipment can’t be put in the San Diego River because of the environmental impact. Moving gear on and off Friars Road would have delayed the project, SANDAG said.RELATED: Massive development proposed next to Fashion ValleyWithin six months, SANDAG hopes to have enough work done to move out most of the equipment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeless encampments have moved into the site of previous fires in University heights, sparking more fire concerns.March 2018. Amid a firefight along Highway 163, bystanders on the Vermont Street Bridge looking on soon after the flames spark. Fire crews would put out that fire without any major damage. Months later, a smaller fire erupted in the same area, near another encampment. Marybeth Chruden and the University Heights Community Association organized a petition drive, leading the San Diego City Council to approve more than a million dollars for canyon abatements across the city, including one at the University Heights site in July.In the past few weeks, that site looked a lot different."Shocked, but in a way, not surprised," said Chruden.Chruden's group posted photos on their Facebook page of homeless encampments and the surrounding mess."It shows they are very comfortable, out in the open ... We see people smoking and little campfires down there. The fire danger still high with dry materials in that canyon," said Chruden.Chruden says after several requests on the city's 'Get It Done' app, crews cleared out the area Wednesday morning, except for one mattress. The problem? She expects the homeless to move back in soon."Maybe tonight, in three days or four days. Within a week, something will be going on down there," said Chruden.Chruden believes regular visits to the area by city crews are needed, possibly twice a month. 10news reached out to Councilmember Chris Ward's office for a comment and are waiting to hear back. 1574

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year.From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich.What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing.This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe.But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. "I can never find a good reason why a Veteran should not be housed, safe, and comfortable in their own life." 1292

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite record unemployment levels in California, the state's economy keeps turning, partly on the backs of the small businesses that have been able to stay afloat. However, six months into the COVID-19 pandemic we’re seeing how some businesses that were forced to shut down to prevent the spread of the virus won't reopen."We've had to pivot and shift, almost call audibles in the middle of what's going on to try to keep our businesses open," said Derrick Banks, owner of Freshly Faded Barber Shop.Banks has been in business for about seven years.He said beyond the haircut, there's something special about the conversations that take place while at the shop."If you see my barber cape, it says ‘Love thy homies’ on it," Banks said. "I feel like every person that gets in my chair becomes a friend eventually."Banks said back in March when businesses were initially forced to close, it's those close conversations and connections to the community that took the biggest toll. That and trying to keep up with an ever-changing series of rules and health and safety standards."We've had to pivot back and forth between cutting hair outside, cutting hair inside, having these safety precautions," he said. "One day we're allowed to be opened, and the next day we're not."While Banks has been able to stay in business, he has only to look down the street to see others who didn't make it."Just in a two-mile radius of this shop, there have been two barbershops that I know of that have permanently closed," he said.Banks said there's no playbook for how to get a business through a pandemic. He understands the importance of small businesses in the community and believes those running them need to do what's best for them."I'm not in a position where I can hope for anything," he said. "I have to have a clear plan, but I am optimistic."The EconomyYou can find empty storefronts in cities across California. But what does it mean for the state's economy?"California is suffering like the rest of the country," said Alan Gin, an economics professor at the University of San Diego. "We had a surge in terms of our unemployment rate. It's come down but still much higher than before the pandemic."Gin said the service and leisure industries have been the hardest hit.According to the California Employment Development Department (EDD), the state's unemployment rate improved to 11.4 percent in August as the state's employers added 101,900 jobs.In July, the state's unemployment rate was up at 13.5 percent.The state agency says Leisure and Hospitality posted the largest industry job loss in August (-14,600), and 561,900 of the sector's 633,000 year-over job losses have occurred since March 2020.Despite the record unemployment, Gin said California has lot of high-tech and business service jobs that can work remotely. It means many higher-paying industries didn't have to shut down.His worry is about the growing financial inequality."It was already bad in this country, but now it's likely to be even worse as a result of this," Gin said.Gin also noted that help from the federal government and unemployment benefits paid out by the EDD has also helped keep California's economy turning.EDD said it processed more than 13 million claims and distributed more than billion over the course of the pandemic.It's important to note last week, the EDD announced it's taking a two-week reset period. The goal, they explained, is to clear the massive backlog of unemployment claims that have been filed over the past six months. An EDD strike team found 600,000 California workers still haven't received the benefits they applied for.Reporter Adam Racusin asked Gin if California's economy can survive another six months of the current conditions."I think an important aspect is whether or not another stimulus package can be passed," Gin said. “I think some more relief is needed. The worry is that with the cutoff of unemployment that the people at the lower end, who are being kept afloat, are going to fall off a cliff." 4047

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Few people have reached the pinnacle of publishing as a New York Times best selling author with 22 million books sold.Fewer still founded a company that teaches leadership to Fortune 500 companies around the world, from Blue Cross, Bayer and Burger King to Exxon Mobile, Hilton, L’Oreal, Nabisco, Toyota and Victoria Secret just to name a few.Author, speaker, and business coach Ken Blanchard is celebrating his 80th birthday this month.His techniques, or values for effective management have guided millions since his blockbuster book The One Minute Manager in 1982.Blanchard tells 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt all good performance starts with clear goals.“If people don't know what you want them to do, what's the chance of them doing it?”Then he advises managers to wander around and see if they can catch people doing something right, then take the time for a one minute praising.Because Blanchard says people today prefer to work side by side with management, instead of the old top-down approach…he and his co-author revised the third tenet to re-direct.With a smile on his face he says, “ I think that's what made the book so popular, because, if you have goals, find them doing something good and praise them, and redirect them...duh.”Blanchard calls this philosophy of turning the business pyramid on its head with workers at the top and the boss at the bottom, Servant Leadership.His global headquarters in Escondido has a sculpture depicting this viewpoint showing Jesus washing the feet of Peter.“People who are servant leaders are good listeners, they ask questions more than tell, and they're really there for you, because they want you to win…and then they know that if you win, they win.”Garry Ridge, the CEO of San Diego based WD-40, took Blanchard’s Leadership class at University of San Diego in 1999. He says it confirmed what he believed and taught him what he didn’t know.“If you can imagine a place where people, are involved in something bigger than themselves, you learn something new, feel safe, are protected by values, and go home happy...that's what we strive for, because it's all about the people!”The people, all the people, from the top down are called members of the tribe at WD-40.“Leadership is not about being in charge... leadership is about taking care of the people in your charge.”Ridge does that by creating comfortable spaces, stocking the kitchen, providing a gym available to employees 24 hours a day and providing bicycles to make it easy to get some fresh air.“So here we don't have managers we have coaches. I'm a coach. My job as a coach is to help people play their best game every day. It’s not about me. It’s about how to do we get people to enjoy what they do every day?”It’s a formula for success at WD-40.
