JINAN, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen people were confirmed dead and two others fatally injured in a fireworks explosion Saturday afternoon in east China's Shandong Province. The explosion took place at an unlicensed fireworks processing factory in Yangzhuangzi Village of Qingyun Township, Qingyun County, at 1:30 p.m. Three rooms owned by villager Yang Ziye were toppled, according to the Qingyun county government. Identities of the dead were still unknown at the moment.     The police were hunting down for the tenant who was suspected of causing a major crime for the accident, said Gao Lixia, an official in charge of publicity with Qingyun County Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).     The two injured were rushed to a hospital in Binzhou, a nearby city in Shandong, for medical treatment.     Qingyun is a county in northern Shandong and is about three hours' bus ride from Jinan, the provincial capital.

BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The international community has continued to condemn the July 5 riots in Urumqi, the capital of China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which has left 192 people dead.     Religious leaders and some experts also voiced support for the joint efforts by the Chinese government and various ethnic groups to safeguard ethnic unity and social stability.     Regional leaders of two major Islamic organizations -- Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah -- in the Indonesian city of Surabaya said Islam advocates peace and opposes violence.     Muslims love peace, pursue peace and take real actions to maintain peace and oppose any violent and terrorist actions, they said Tuesday while meeting Wang Huagen, Chinese general consulate in Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city.     The two Islamic leaders also expressed the hope that social order in Urumqi could be restored soon.     Pierre Picard, a human geologist and China expert at the University of Paris, said he was shocked by the July 5 incident which was a violent crime orchestrated by foreign terrorists and separatist forces.     China has the right to take actions to maintain national stability and restore social order and the measures it has taken were appropriate, he told Xinhua.     No country in the world can tolerate attacks by terrorist forces, he added.     The Al-Riyadh newspaper, one of the leading newspapers in Saudi Arabia, said in a report on Tuesday that the July 5 incident in Xinjiang was a crime of violence that was premeditated and organized.     The unrest was not an ethnic issue nor a religious one, but a case against public order incited by a few separatists and mobs, it stressed.     Bahrain's Al-Ayam newspaper shared the view. In     a report published on Tuesday, it said the incident was by no means an ethnic or religious issue, but a grave violent crime involving beating,     smashing, looting and burning premeditated, organized and instigated by the separatist forces both in and outside China.     The purpose of the separatists is to sabotage ethnic unity and social stability in Xinjiang, said the report.     The local government of the autonomous region has adopted effective measures in accordance with law to stop the violent crimes in a bid to safeguard social stability and resume normal social order as well as protect local people's rights and interests, it said.     The report said that the Chinese government had introduced and carried out a series of ethnic and religious policies since the People's Republic of China was established.     China always sticks to the principle of protecting ethnic minorities equal rights and safeguarding ethnic solidarity, and is firmly opposed to ethnic discrimination and oppression of any ethnic group as well as any activities aimed at undermining ethnic unity, it said.     China has always valued the role played by Islamic countries and attached great importance to its friendly relations with them, the report said, adding that such relations will be further cemented through joint efforts by both sides.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao raised a five-point proposal Thursday to advance the Sino-Turkish friendly and cooperative relationship to a higher level.     Hu put forward the proposal on promoting the Sino-Turkish partnership on the basis of mutual respect, mutual trust, equality and mutual benefit as well as common development, when talking with visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gul at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. China was willing to work with Turkey to strengthen political ties, said Hu, adding that the two governments should strengthen communication and coordination and support each other on important issues concerning their core interests.     Their legislatures and parties should continue to conduct multi-level exchanges, so as to promote understanding and friendship. BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The China Investment Corporation (CIC), the country's sovereign wealth fund, announced Tuesday that it decided to buy 1.2 billion U.S. dollar common stocks in Morgan Stanley's 2.2-billion-U.S.-dollar common stock offering.     Morgan Stanley announced Tuesday it had priced a public offering of common equity of 2.2 billion U.S. dollars. The proceeds are intended to fully redeem the preferred capital of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) before the end of June.     The TARP is a program of the United States government to purchase assets and equity from financial institutions in order to strengthen its financial sector. It is the largest component of the U.S. government's measures in 2008 to address the subprime mortgage crisis.     Morgan Stanley notified the CIC of the offering in light of its healthy business relationship with CIC and the preemptive rights CIC holds. CIC plans to participate in this offering, according toa notice on its Web site.     CIC was optimistic in Morgan Stanley's future development as "Morgan Stanley is widely expected to be able to leverage on its strengthened financial position and will be on the road of resuming its successful trajectory amid the dramatic restructuring of the international financial services industry".     On December 19, 2007, CIC purchased 5.6 billion U.S. dollars mandatory convertible securities into Morgan Stanley common stock, representing approximately 9.86 percent equity ownership in Morgan Stanley.     However, after Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc.'s investment in Morgan Stanley in October 2008, CIC's equity ownership was diluted to approximately 7.68 percent.     This new purchase would bring CIC's equity ownership in Morgan Stanley back to approximately 9.86 percent, effectively reducing CIC's overall cost basis and increasing the returns potential, said CIC.     According to a statement posted on Morgan Stanley Web site Tuesday, it has priced a public offering of approximately 80.2 million shares of common stock to the public at 27.44 dollars per share.     CIC has agreed to purchase 44.7 million shares of common stock at the public offering price while the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc. has agreed to buy 16 million shares, the Morgan Stanley statement said.

BEIJING, July 18 (Xinhua) -- East Star Airlines Co., Ltd. said Saturday here that its current combined debt surpassed 752 million yuan (110.1 million U.S. dollars).     Zhao Changbing, spokesperson of the company, said the announcement was made to counter rumors about the status quo of the company's assets and debt     Zhao said total assets of the company stood at 1.01 billion yuan.     Established in 2005 in central Hubei Province, East Star Airlines operated more than 20 routes. Its operation was suspended by the industry regulator as of March 15 this year, due to financial difficulties of the carrier.
