PIKELOT ISLAND – Like out of a movie, three missing mariners were rescued from a deserted island in the Pacific after writing “SOS” in the sand.Authorities in the U.S. and Australia say the three men departed Puluwat Atoll on a 23-foot skiff last Thursday, intending to travel 21 nautical miles to Pulap, Chuuk.However, they never made it to their destination and were reported missing, according to the Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. A rescue mission was then launched.“Joint Rescue Sub-Center Guam received notification of an overdue skiff last seen in the vicinity of Chuuk and requested our assistance,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Shaun McRoberts, 506th Air Expeditionary Aerial Refueling Squadron assistant director of operations. “Once notified, we began immediately working a plan to launch crews to locate the missing vessel.”After almost three hours into their mission and flying at about 1,500 feet, rescue crews located the mariners on the tiny, uninhabited island of Pikelot, Yap.“We were toward the end of our search pattern,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jason Palmeira-Yen. “We turned to avoid some rain showers and that’s when we looked down and saw an island, so we decide to check it out and that’s when we saw SOS and a boat right next to it on the beach. From there we called in the Australian Navy because they had two helicopters nearby that could assist and land on the island.”Early in the morning on Monday, authorities say a small boat crew was launched and rescued the mariners.The sailors told officials that they ran off course while traveling and eventually ran out of gas, according to the Australian Navy. 1643

With having to care for three children, they decided it was time to make some extra cash, so they posted their car for rent on Turo. "It's really just posting pictures of your car, and they set you up with a photographer if you want professional pictures done of your car," explains Christie.Depending on how new and nice your vehicle is, Christie says Turo allows you to price your car accordingly. Her Jeep Wrangler rents for 9 a day. At first, Christie says they raked in about 0 a month, which was just enough to pay the car payment. But as they got more reviews from renters, they were making enough to supplement an income. "I would say our profit, 0 at least," says Christie. "During the summer months, it can be up to ,400 in profit."Making that kind of money is great. But, Christie says there are a few sacrifices you have to be willing to make. "If somebody books last minute, it's kind of being able to rearrange my schedule to be able to meet them."A majority of the time, Christie has to drive 30 minutes to the airport to drop the car off with the renter at the airport. Another downside: a lot of miles have been put on her car. She says in just two years, renters have put 51,000 miles on her Jeep. Not only does Christie rent out her car, but she has actually rented a car through Turo while on vacation in Saint Louis. Nooyi, 62, will be replaced by Pepsi's global operations chief Ramon Laguarta, 54.Nooyi, who was born in India, is one of a handful of people of color to lead a Fortune 500 company.She helped turn Pepsi into one of the most successful food and beverage companies in the world. Sales grew 80% during her 12-year tenure. She spearheaded Pepsi's transition to a greener, more environmentally aware company.Nooyi has been with Pepsi for 24 years. PALOMAR MOUNTAIN (CNS) - Due to overnight snowfall and current low temperatures, chains were being required today on Palomar Mountain, the California Highway Patrol said.Only vehicles with chains, or four-wheel drive snow-rated tires, will be allowed access, authorities said."The CHP and the San Diego Sheriff's Department will be patrolling the area to monitor trespassing and make sure the roadways are kept clear of parked vehicles," said Oceanside CHP Officer Mark Latulippe, who pointed out there are limited facilities on Palomar Mountain for food, restrooms and trash.Mountain visitors were being urged to respect the privacy of residents and private property.Officials also recommend using extra caution on slippery roads, reducing speed and increasing following distance due to compromised visibility in wintery conditions.The CHP also reminded visitors to Palomar Mountain to "practice good snow etiquette."That involves:Parking only where legally allowed, and not blocking roadway accessfor emergency vehicles. Vehicles blocking any part of the roadway may becited or towed.Avoiding trespassing onto private property.
