SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - A former Team USA figure skater has filed suit against the U.S. Figure Skating Association and skating coach Richard Callaghan for allegedly sexually abusing the skater between 1999 and 2001, including at a skating competition held in San Diego.The suit, filed this week in San Diego County Superior Court, alleges that Callaghan sexually abused Adam Schmidt starting at the age of 14, even after reports surfaced alleging he had abused another skater.Callaghan -- perhaps best known for coaching Tara Lipinski to an Olympic gold medal in 1998 -- was accused of molesting another former skater, then-15-year-old Craig Maurizi, in a 1999 New York Times article.RELATED: Figure skater Ashley Wagner says she was sexually assaulted by a former coachSchmidt alleges that figure skating officials brought the article's allegations up for an internal review, but then dismissed the allegation "as it claimed the victim had not filed a formal written grievance within 60 days of the sexual misconduct perpetrated by (Callaghan)."Schmidt claims this system "made it nearly impossible for sexual abuse claimants to bring effective complaints forward against perpetrators of sexual abuse and misconduct."As he remained in good standing with skating officials, Schmidt alleges that Callaghan was able to continue abusing him over the course of three years, including at the 2001 Master of Figure Skating competition held in San Diego, when Schmidt was 16.Schmidt says the abuse has left him suffering from "psychological injuries and illnesses" as an adult, including a "psychological breakdown" and hospitalization in early 2017.Schmidt's attorney, John Manly, said "Our client is an extremely talented young athlete who dreamed of nothing more than to stand on an Olympic podium and hear our National Anthem. Instead, he had to stop competing in the sport he loved because of the sexual, physical and emotional damage done to him by his coach, Richard Callaghan."It started getting weird when he would leave his jacket, tie, and shirt on, but then take his suitepants and his underwear off," Schmidt told ABC News.The U.S. Figure Skating Association and the ice rinks where Callaghan worked ignored complaints around him for years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A collective of conservation organizations filed lawsuits Thursday against San Diego County and its board of supervisors for approving a controversial housing development in the Otay Ranch community, with the groups claiming that the development endangers wildlife and the development's future residents. The project known as Adara was approved last month with a 3-2 vote and involves construction of more than 1,000 homes and a commercial village core, along with an elementary school, fire station, sheriff's office, trails, electric vehicle charging stations, solar panels and more than 700 acres of open space and parks. Environmental groups contend that its location, between the city of Chula Vista and rural community Jamul, is home to several endangered and protected plant and animal species and is at exceptional risk for wildfires. Plaintiffs include the Center for Biological Diversity, Preserve Wild Santee, the California Chaparral Institute, Endangered Habitats League, California Native Plant Society and the Sierra Club. ``Building houses in this fire-prone place will put people at risk, and it'll wreak havoc on golden eagles and other wildlife,'' said Peter Broderick, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. ``By approving this sprawl project, officials have put both homeowners and wildlife in danger. They've dealt a big setback to sustainable development in San Diego County.'' In their complaint, the plaintiffs referenced county data identifying ``22 special-status plants and 28 special-status wildlife species'' on the project site. They also allege that the area is especially prone to wildfires, which was noted by Supervisor Dianne Jacob in her dissenting vote on the project. The complaint states the area ``has burned at least 17 times in the last 100 years'' and is ``at serious risk for fast-moving, wind-driven fires.'' The site's steep terrain would make suppressing fires difficult, and homeowners would only have one evacuation route available, according to the plaintiffs. Peter Andersen, chair of the Sierra Club's San Diego Chapter, called the project ``a fire trap that endangers all East County residents, contributes to severe traffic jams and destroys multiple species' habitat,'' while Richard Halsey of the California Chaparral Institute said ``History has shown that during a wind-driven wildfire, developments like this one in a known fire corridor can and have been destroyed by embers flying a mile or more ahead of the flame front. The claim that a development like this is fire safe ignores everything we have learned during the destructive 2017 and 2018 firestorms.'' 2662
