On the campus of Howard University, Vice-president-elect, and alumna, Kamala Harris is never too far from sight.“It's important to note that she was a political science student,” said Howard University political science professor Niambi Carter.Carter says Harris’ election as vice-president is casting a renewed spotlight on her alma mater and the role of more than 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America.“Howard University has been around since 1867,” Carter said, going on to add, “It's not validation for us because we know the intellectual labor and what we contribute in these spaces, but I think the world is just sort of catching up to what many people already knew about HBCUs and why they're so special and so significant.”It’s a similar story about 20 miles northeast of Howard University at Bowie State University in Maryland, also an HBCU, and founded before the end of the Civil War.“We’re the oldest HBCU in the state of Maryland,” said Aminta Breaux, president of Bowie State University, who is also on the President’s Board of Advisors for HBCUs.Breaux said Vice-president-elect Kamala Harris’ HBCU education is a point of pride.“I'm just overjoyed to see my students so excited and full of joy and recognizing what this means in the history, not just in our HBCUs of this country, of all the individuals seeing her and thinking, ‘If she can do that, maybe I can, too,’” Breaux said.HBCU’s are located in Washington, D.C. and 19 states, mostly in the South and East. They make up just three percent of higher learning institutions across the country but account for about 20 percent of African American college graduates.“Our endowments across the board, in comparison to predominantly white institutions, pale in comparison,” Breaux said. “And so we need greater philanthropic support, private support, as well as federal and state support.”It comes as, over the years, the students attending HBCUs have become increasingly diverse, including at Howard University.“If you're thinking that this space is closed and it's only open to African-Americans, or people who are identified as Black, it is not,” Howard’s Professor Carter said. “It is a space that is open for all.”It is a historic space attracting new attention in the present. 2280

Nursing homes and long-term care facilities need more personal protective equipment (PPE) than they did at the start of the pandemic.“If a home doesn't have at least a week's worth, that's a problem. It's regarded as a critical shortage and the reason why is because if you have an outbreak, you can start chewing through your existing supplies like that,” said Teresa Murray, a consumer watchdog at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG).The group looked at data from facilities sent to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. They found one in five were dangerously low on one or more items, like gloves and hand sanitizer. Almost half didn't have a one-week supply of at least one type of PPE.“And they say that it's not unusual at all for nurses to use masks for like five days,” said Murray. “If they even have gowns, they're reusing them.”U.S. PIRG says these facilities couldn't compete with demand for supply.The Medical Supply Transparency and Delivery Act, which is sitting in Congress, would help stabilize prices. And the Defense Production Act could be used to increase U.S. production of PPE.“And not only does it affect the residents that are in that home. It affects the workers who, guess what, they go home, they go home to their families,” said Rowan. “They go home, to their grocery stores and to their churches. And their kids go to school. And so, this is, I mean, it's no surprise that this is why we're seeing some of these community outbreaks because of one case that starts in a nursing home.”When the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid said the data was accurate, U.S. PIRG says they were referred to FEMA for a solution plan. Ohio State's board of trustees is debating the fate of football coach Urban Meyer, who could face disciplinary action over his handling of domestic violence allegations against one of his former assistants.The board of trustees held a meeting private Wednesday to discuss a possible punishment against Meyer.Meyer has been accused of turning a blind eye to alleged domestic violence committed by Zach Smith, his wide receivers coach at both Ohio State and Florida. Smith was fired by Ohio State in late July when his ex-wife filed a domestic violence civil protection order.A day after Smith's firing, Meyer told reporters at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago that he was not aware of any allegations against Smith. Reports later indicate that Meyer's wife and wives of other coaches were aware of the allegations against Smith.Meyer then acknowledged in a statement that he misled reporters about his knowledge of Smith's allegations.  950

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) — After a decade of delays, the Oceanside Beach Resort is weeks away from construction.The initial approval for the project happened 13 years ago when the City of Oceanside selected the developer. The project is located near the small white beach home featured in the movie Top Gun. 10News talked with Senior Vice President of S.D. Malkin Properties, Jeremy Cohen, who said they ran into many roadblocks along the way."We faced a lawsuit, we won, it was appealed, and we won that, and that kind of brought us to where we are today," said Cohen.The lawsuit claimed the program the city uses to share hotel taxes and support the development violated the state constitution. Along with a drawn-out lawsuit, they also were pushed back by the Great Recession and a period of delays in redevelopment across California.Cohen tells 10News, “Although it had been done dozens of times in the state before, it was the first time it was challenged. The court found it was completely constitutional, completely acceptable, and so it just delayed us for three years."Construction is now set to start in December 2018, just before the new year. “There will be a couple of months of excavation; then you’ll see a concrete superstructure, about six or seven stories,” Cohen detailed.The parking for the beach resort will be relocated to an underground garage. As far as the Top Gun house is concerned, it will be completely taken off the property. Historians will preserve the exterior and Cohen will update the inside.“We’re looking at it as a really special kind of ice cream place so everyone can come in and get a 'top cone' from the Top Gun house," Cohen said. 1674
