Rattled by a string of explosions, which has put the city on edge for the last two weeks, a possible new explosion was reported Tuesday evening near a Goodwill store, the Austin Police Department said on its Twitter account. But after an hour of investigating, the police department said the explosion stemmed from an an incendiary device. The department said the incident was likely not connected to a previous string of explosions. One male said to be in his 30s was transported to the hospital. Blake Farenthold announced he's resigning from the House of Representatives effective Friday, a few months after news broke he used taxpayer money to pay a settlement to a former aide who accused the Texas Republican of sexual harassment and other improper conduct.After his announcement, the National Republican Congressional Committee, which works to elect GOP candidates to the House, requested he pay back the money that was used for the settlement."I hope Blake is true to his word and pays back the ,000 of taxpayer money he used as a settlement. As I have said repeatedly, Congress must hold ourselves to a higher standard and regain the trust of the American people," NRCC Chairman Steve Stivers said in a statement. "I'm confident we'll have a Republican in this seat come November."Within minutes of his announcement, Farenthold appeared to have deleted his official Twitter account."While I planned on serving out the remainder of my term in Congress, I know in my heart it's time for me to move along and look for new ways to serve," he said in his statement Friday afternoon. "Leaving my service in the House, I'm able to look back at the entirety of my career in public office and say that it was well worthwhile."The House Ethics Committee announced late last year it would investigate Farenthold for allegations of sexual harassment from his former aide, Lauren Greene, who received the ,000 settlement after she sued Farenthold in December 2014 for gender discrimination, sexual harassment and a hostile work environment.Farenthold denied some of the allegations against him but apologized using for inappropriate language and his role in creating a hostile workplace. Republican candidate Leslie Gibson has dropped out of the race for Maine's House of Representatives following backlash from controversial comments he made about two student survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting."I am not walking away with my head hung low. I am walking away with my head held high," Gibson told the Portland Press Herald on Friday, saying he had made the decision after conversations with family and friends."It's the best thing for everybody," Gibson added.The Maine candidate drew outrage after posting insulting tweets about two Parkland students -- Emma González and David Hogg -- in light of their national gun control efforts."There is nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing that she has to say unless you're a frothing at the mouth moonbat," Gibson tweeted of González, according to the Press Herald. He reportedly called Hogg a "bald-faced liar." Rebekah Jones, a former State of Florida public health employee who was fired in the spring by Gov. Ron DeSantis tweeted video on Monday of police officers raiding her home at gunpoint.Jones, who had created the state’s original COVID-19 informational dashboard, had since created her own website with information of Florida’s coronavirus cases, hospital load and deaths.During the raid, Jones said that officers seized her computer equipment.
