SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities put out a call today for any additional alleged victims of a mortuary services worker accused of looting a recently deceased Spring Valley man's home, carrying away valuables with a gurney and a body bag.Sammy Willie Gates, 49, allegedly ransacked the 60-year-old man's house late on the night of Aug. 31, about 11 hours after deputies conducting a welfare check found the resident dead of natural causes, according to sheriff's officials.On Sept. 2, one of the victim's relatives reported discovering items, including a firearm and safe, missing from the residence, Sgt. Karen Bloch said. Two days later, the family reported that reviews of surveillance camera footage had revealed that the home of the victim, whose name has not been released, had been burglarized.The video clips showed a man -- later identified by investigators as Gates, owner of independently operated Mortuary Transportation Services -- arriving at the man's house in a white utility van, the sergeant said.Gates allegedly entered the home and exited shortly thereafter with two bags filled with stolen property, then returned with a gurney and an empty body bag that he used to haul away more property.On Sept. 9, detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station served a search warrant at Gates' El Cajon-area home, where the deceased man's safe and gun allegedly were recovered, along with 16 additional firearms, many believed to be war relics dating back to the early 1900s.``Two additional safes, multiple personal identifying documents, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books and several thousand dollars in collectable coins were also recovered from Gates' residence,'' the sergeant alleged. ``A gurney and body bags matching (those seen in) the surveillance video (from) the victim's residence were recovered from Gates' white utility van.''Gates was jailed on suspicion of residential burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was killed in a chain-reaction crash triggered by a loose dog in lanes of state Route 94 near downtown San Diego today.Three cars were involved in the crash, which was first reported just after 10:30 a.m. on westbound Route 94 near 25th Street.A Ford F-150 owned by the San Diego Humane Society was parked in the median of the freeway with the driver and a passenger still inside, preparing to capture a dog when the animal ran into lanes of traffic, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher told City News Service.Multiple cars stopped and swerved, including a Toyota Camry with three occupants that braked and came to a stop in the No. 1 lane, the dispatcher said.A Dodge truck, also in the No. 1 lane, swerved into the median to avoid the Camry, and was struck in the right rear corner by a GMC Yukon towing a trailer that was unable to stop in time.The force of the impact pushed the Dodge into the Camry, which in turn pushed the Camry into the Humane Society pickup, according to the dispatcher.In the aftermath of the accident, it wasn't immediately clear how many cars were involved, but responding fire crews realized the Camry, which at some point had moved to the right shoulder of the freeway, was also part of the crash and launched a rescue operation for that car's occupants, according to a CHP incident log.A 53-year-old woman in the back seat of the Camry sustained a major head injury and was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, the dispatcher said.The woman's identity wasn't immediately released.Three other people, including two from the Camry and one from the GMC, 1652

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old woman in broad daylight on a Mission Beach street pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of assault with intent to commit a sex crime. Philemon Shark, 40, who has two prior convictions from Washington state for residential burglary from 2014 and 2015, faces life in prison if convicted, said San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador. Judge Joseph Brannigan set Shark's bail at million and ordered the defendant to have no contact with the alleged victim. Amador said all sexual assaults -- no matter what level -- are ``serious'' and taken ``exceptionally serious'' by the District Attorney's Office. ``I think part of the concern is that when an individual is attacked in broad daylight in an area where they felt safe or did not feel a threat, of course that's added concern, but our office takes all sexual assaults equally as serious,'' the prosecutor said outside court. The attack happened about 8:40 a.m. last Sunday on Bayside Lane near San Jose Lane, just off Mission Boulevard, according to San Diego Police Lt. Jason Weeden. Weeden said the victim was walking south when Shark allegedly approached her from behind, threw her to the ground and held her down while he assaulted her. The woman screamed for help, and several residents forced the man off her, the lieutenant said. When Shark tried to leave, some of the residents followed him but lost track of him, Weeden said. Then, about 45 minutes after the attack, one of the neighbors found Shark hiding in a breezeway. Shark allegedly fled but was apprehended by patrol officers and booked into jail. Weeden said Shark is from the Seattle area and was believed to have been living in San Diego for the last few months. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A professional skateboarder and Encinitas resident who pleaded guilty last year to federal drug trafficking charges was sentenced Friday to five years of supervised release, with one year spent on GPS house arrest.Prosecutors had sought a 41-month prison sentence for Robert Lorifice, who pleaded guilty along with Elizabeth Alexandra Landis to charges involving the distribution and sale of heroin and methamphetamine.Lorifice's attorney, Stefano Molea, said his 32-year-old client's path to drugs began when he fractured his tailbone, a "particularly painful" injury that led to an opioid dependence and eventual heroin addiction.RELATED: Encinitas pro skateboarder, girlfriend admit federal drug trafficking chargesHis substance abuse and other physical issues stemming from his injury affected a skating career that previously garnered Lorifice sponsorships and participation in the X-Games, where he won three medals.Molea said Lorifice eventually "hit rock bottom" and "began associating with people that eventually led him down the path of selling drugs."Molea said Lorifice has gone through rehab, enrolled in school, and secured his first non-skateboarding job."Mr. Lorifice is extremely grateful to the court for believing in him and giving him a second chance," the attorney said, "He looks forward to helping those in the skateboarding community realize the dangers of drug use and has recently teamed up with the Ryan Bowers Foundation to work with kids with the hopes of showing them how skateboarding can be a healthy outlet to obtain and maintain their sobriety."RELATED: Three arrested in drug seizure at Encinitas homeProsecutors said Lorifice admitted selling drugs out of his home, and disposing of methamphetamine and other substances when investigators served a search warrant at his home in 2018.Investigators found 193 grams of meth, 231.6 grams of heroin, more than 800 Xanax pills, Roxicodone pills, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms, along with materials used in drug sales, such as a digital scale, three cell phones and ,824 in cash, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Lorifice's home was searched again that December, and on that occasion, he attempted to flush a "tennis-ball sized chunk of methamphetamine down the toilet," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Authorities also seized around 31 grams of black tar heroin, 18 grams of meth and ,926 in cash from drug sales.Landis, described by prosecutors as Lorifice's then-girlfriend in a statement issued last year, is slated to be sentenced in January. 2579

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a ruling stemming from a lawsuit brought the city attorneys of San Diego and two other cities and the state, a federal judge today granted a preliminary injunction against ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft, requiring them to classify their drivers as employees rather than independent contractors in accordance with a new state law.San Francisco-based Judge Ethan P. Schulman ruled in favor of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, and the city attorneys of San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco in their lawsuit alleging Uber and Lyft have misclassified their drivers, preventing them from receiving ``the compensation and benefits they have earned through the dignity of their labor.''The suit alleges the companies are violating Assembly Bill 5, which went into effect Jan. 1 and seeks to ensure ``gig workers'' misclassified as independent contractors are afforded certain labor protections, such as the right to minimum wage, sick leave, unemployment insurance and workers' compensation benefits.Both companies issued statements indicating they would appeal the ruling, which is scheduled to go into effect in 10 days.Schulman wrote in his ruling that ``both the Legislature and our Supreme Court have found that the misclassification of workers as `independent contractors' deprives them of the panoply of basic rights and protections to which employees are entitled under California law, including minimum wage, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, paid sick leave and paid family leave.''The judge said that under the ``ABC test'' used to determine whether a worker is an employee or an independent contractor, the companies would not be able to argue their drivers are independent contractors as they perform work that is within the company's usual course of business.Schulman recognized that the injunction could have major impacts for the companies, as well as some drivers who prefer to remain independent, and wrote that ``if the injunction the People seek will have far-reaching effects, they have only been exacerbated by Defendants' prolonged and brazen refusal to comply with California law.''The campaign for Proposition 22, a proposed ballot initiative sponsored by Uber and Lyft that would allow rideshare drivers to work as independent contractors, decried the ruling.``We need to pass Prop 22 more than ever,'' said Jan Krueger, a retiree who drives with Lyft in Sacramento. ``Sacramento politicians and special interests keep pushing these disastrous laws and lawsuits that would take away the ability of app-based drivers to choose when and how they work, even though by a 4:1 margin drivers want and need to work independently.We'll take our case to the voters to protect the ability of app-based drivers to work as independent contractors, while providing historic new benefits like an earnings guarantee, health benefits and more.''San Diego City Attorney Mara W.
