CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A Florida family says they were recently targeted by a terrifying kidnapping scam.Katie and Steve Watson live in Coral Springs, Florida and want to warn families about the crime.Katie tells WPTV that she received a call on Monday from a number she didn’t recognize. On the line she heard a whimpering child, then a mysterious man say he had kidnapped Katie’s daughter, Chloe."All of a sudden a man's voice came on the line, and he said, 'Katie I have your daughter. She's in the back of my van,' " Watson told WPTV on Tuesday.Katie said she quickly hung up, feeling in her gut that it was scam. "That's really part of what gave me the chills was somebody calling me by my name," said Watson. "That was unsettling."Katie says she figured it was a scam, but then got a bad feeling when she checked her daughter’s location through her phone's GPS.It initially said her daughter was at Westglades Middle School in Parkland, which Chloe attends. But then the GPS suddenly jumped to another location in Parkland.Upon further investigation, the Watsons found that her daughter was indeed at school, and more importantly, safe."I got chills all over my body and I was like, OK, I know that was a scam but that's like every parent's worst nightmare is to hear your kid has been kidnapped," said Watson.The FBI calls this a virtual kidnapping scam and says it’s evolved over the years and become more sophisticated.In the calls, a crook says he’s kidnapped your loved one and demands money in exchange for their safe return.In the Watsons' case, however, the scam was taken to a frightening new level with the use of a whimpering child on the line.The FBI offers these tips so you don’t become a victim: 1748

Cotton Incorporated responded on Tuesday to a viral Facebook controversy surrounding a Hobby Lobby decoration that angered a customer.The customer shared a photo of a cotton decoration on Sept. 14, 2017 on Facebook, and said it is reminiscent of slavery and those who were forced to pick cotton. She called for the retailer to remove the item from shelves."We were surprised at the initial post because cotton has been sold in craft stores and used as a botanical decoration for decades," a Cotton Incorporated spokesman said in a statement. "Based on the responses to the original post, it does not seem that most people conflate a decorative choice with a regrettable chapter in American history."On Monday, Sept. 18, the "Cotton Stems in Glass Vase" item on Hobby Lobby's website was on sale for , marked down from .99. It is described as a natural decor with hints of the great outdoors, including large fluffs of white cotton finish on each stem. Cotton Incorporated argues that the cotton industry has changed since the days before the Civil War. "The U.S. cotton industry today bears little resemblance to that of the last century or the one before. CORONADO, Calif. -- A distracted school bus driver is being blamed for a chain-reaction crash that injured students on their way home.According to the CHP, just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, a bus carrying about 50 Coronado Middle School students rear-ended a truck that was stopped at a light, which hit another truck.Afterwards, Coronado's police chief and other officers handed out water because the bus was stuffy.There were no serious injuries, but six or seven students did complain of some pain.  It's unclear how many were taken to the hospital.The CHP says the preliminary cause is unsafe speed. CORONADO (KGTV) — New rules go into effect on Thursday, August 16, restricting where people can and can't use e-cigarettes in Coronado.The City Council passed an ordinance on July 17 to make the popular devices subject to the same rules as regular cigarettes, banning their use in many public places.According to the new law, e-cigarettes will no longer be allowed in the following unenclosed areas:1. All public property including, but not limited to, streets, highways, alleys, rights-of-way, parkways, sidewalks, parking lots and pathways; 2. Outdoor public places; 3. Outdoor recreational areas; 4. Outdoor service areas; 5. Outdoor dining areas.An exception has been made for the Municipal Golf Course, where smoking is also allowed.Anyone caught breaking the new rule could be subject to a 0 fine. The city will put up new signs to let people know of the change.Language in the City Council proposition showed that city leaders feared vaping devices and the smoke from them could be dangerous to the public health. They also wanted to eliminate confusion by having different rules for different kinds of smoking.E-cigarette advocates say bans like these are counter-productive.The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association sent a statement to 10News that reads, in part, "Smoking laws that include a ban on vaping send the inaccurate and misleading message that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as smoking.
