Walgreens will close about 200 locations across the United States as part of its plan to cut costs.After buying roughly half of Rite Aid's stores two years ago, Walgreens expanded its American footprint to more than 9,500 stores. The planned closures represent less than 3% of Walgreens locations.The closures will cause "minimal disruption to customers and patients," Walgreens said in a statement. The company will also find jobs for the affected employees in nearby locations. Walgreens did not provide a list of the stores that it plans to close.Parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance announced in June it would close 200 of its more than 2,400 Boots stores in the United Kingdom. The company expects the combined closures to save it .5 billion annually by the end of fiscal 2022. Earlier this year, Walgreens issued a weak profit outlook for 2019, so it pledged to cut costs to boost earnings.Walgreens faces a litany of challenges, including lower prices for generic drugs and a persistent decline in reimbursement rates for medications from state and federal government health care plans.The company revealed in a regulatory filing Tuesday that will take a pre-tax charge of as much as .4 billion for the closures.Rival CVS offered a far rosier outlook. What you won’t see is a single price tag on any of it.“Cafe 180 is a nonprofit donation based restaurant,” Boo Crosby, the manager at Cafe 180 said. “We believe all of our guests who come through our door should be able to be provided a meal regardless of their ability to pay.”About 35 percent of the people who come in to the cafe on any given day are coming in to work for their meal, he said.Some choose to volunteer their time preparing food, cleaning, or completing other tasks. Customers can also choose to donate what they can. It’s the “pay what you can” model.“A lot of people who have never been here before need more of an explanation and that’s fine. We do our best to explain,” Kenzie Burns, a part-time employee at the cafe, said. “Sometimes not being told what to pay scares people so I think being open to the idea of it really helps people participate in our cafe and enjoy it here.”This model opens up the door to those who may not have the money to pay for a healthy meal.“We volunteer for like an hour and then we get food, it helps those who can’t really pay for their meal,” Jeffrey Valdez, one of the volunteers for the cafe, explained. He comes up to the cafe multiple times a week using public transportation. “I can come in, have a good day, start my day off, and then go from there.”“It’s very important because for some of us homeless it sucks, sometimes it’s hard for us to get by on a day to day basis,” Cafe volunteer Amber Priest said. “It actually helps because I can actually have a full meal and actually work.” On the day we talked to her, she was assigned to clean the bathrooms in exchange for her meal.“We’re far from a soup kitchen, we’re a fully operating restaurant,” Crosby explained. “A lot of people care about our community, a lot of people care about making our city a better city.”“Pay what you can” cafes are scattered across the United States. One organization, One World Everybody Eats, has tracked more than 50 independent cafes. However, there’s no way to track the real number since they are all different and no one regulates them.“We’ve actually helped mentor 60 different restaurants around the United States,” Tisha Steele, the Operations Officer at SAME Cafe, said. Steele now trains others how to run their business using this model.SAME Cafe was one of the first cafes to use this business model.“We never put an actual value on anything because we want people to come in and participate how they can,” she said. “We are the longest operating pay what you can model in the United States.”So how do these restaurants make money?“We try to get 65 percent of our revenue from paying customers. The other 35 percent is gonna come from grants. Both private and public grants,” Crosby said.Each cafe works a little bit differently, but they all have the same goal — healthy food accessibility. Recently, SAME Cafe has launched a food truck that mirrors their business model, but the truck can travel to different areas.“Access to food has become an issue, access to healthy food has become a bigger issue,” Crosby said.About 11 percent of households in the United States were food insecure at one point in 2018, according to the USDA.“When you look at how the cost of living is increasing so rapidly across the country but the pay scale isn’t really keeping up with that, one of the first things to go when you’re experiencing hardship is purchasing food,” Steele said.“It helps the people that can’t really pay for their meals, pay,” Valdez said. 3628

  

Whole Foods employees are protesting their working conditions. They staged a mass “sick out” on Tuesday. The group tweeted a list of requests for Amazon – which owns Whole Foods. It included guaranteed paid-leave for workers who self-quarantine, health care coverage for part-time and seasonal workers, and “hazard pay” that’s double what they normally are paid during scheduled hours. Whole Foods has boosted pay by an hour, but workers say that’s not enough. "Hazard pay" is extra compensation when employees are required to work in potentially dangerous conditions. Human resources experts say it's something that wouldn't normally be considered for grocery store or warehouse workers. That's changing because of the pandemic."The risk is elevated and it’s elevated now for way more jobs than we ever planned for,” said Scott Cawood, CEO of World at Work. “Like I said, working at a grocery store, we’re coming into contact with the public. Any of these jobs right now have bumped up the elevation of the dangerous level and would fit into what we think of hazard pay."Some workers at these essential businesses are already receiving “hazard pay.” Big companies like Costco, Target and Walmart are giving employees extra cash. Others are looking at different ways to help."We’ve seen organizations, for example, sending toilet paper to employees, new childcare funds coming open, different types of bonuses being put in place to help,” said Cawood. “We’ve got transportation allowances happening all over. Many benefits that are happening right now are outside the traditional scope because this is such an extreme situation."While many workers welcome the additional pay, some still don't feel comfortable going to work.Congress is working on legislation that would allow employees to refuse hazard pay, but still be able to come back to work after this health crisis. 1887

  

US businesses added 312,000 jobs in December, well above what economists expected and underlining that the American economy remains strong despite recent market turbulence.The unemployment rate rose to 3.9% as more people were looking for work.
