SHANGHAI, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao declared the closure of the World Expo 2010 at the Expo Culture Center in Shanghai Sunday night.A ceremony was held here to celebrate the end of the Expo, which International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) President Jean-Pierre Lafon called an "astounding success."The first of its kind staged in a developing country, the event attracted 246 participating countries and international organizations and 73 million visitors. Both figures are records in the history of expos, the first of which was held in London in 1851.On an area of 5.28 square kilometers, the Expo Site has become a global village where people can not only see rare cultural treasures from around the world -- the bronze chariot and horse sculpture from China's Warring States period, the statue of Athena from Greece and French impressionist masterpieces, for example -- but also get a taste of the diversity of the world's cultures through more than 20,000 cultural events.The gala is eyed in China as another event of national splendor after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games showcased China's status as an economic and political power to the world. 

TAIPEI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan-based groups called on the Kuomintang party to further cooperation and reconciliation with the mainland on Sunday.The call was made by Chi Hsing, chairwoman of the Alliance for the Reunification of China, at a dinner party attended by about 300 representatives from various social groups in Taiwan.She expressed hope that the Kuomintang could take the opportunity of the ever more frequent trade exchanges with the mainland and the overall amity between the two sides to seek further cooperation and reconciliation.She also expressed hope that the two sides could end the hostility so that people from both sides across the Taiwan Strait could share the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.Yok Mu-ming, chairman of the New Party, also delivered a speech at the gathering.The dinner party was held to celebrate three anniversaries which all fall in October, including National Day of the People's Republic of China, the 1911 Revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and the end of the Japanese rule over Taiwan on Oct. 25, 1945.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Zhou Yongkang said here Monday the Chinese government hopes to increase security and law enforcement cooperation with Cuba."We should work together to jointly safeguard the two nations' security and interests," Zhou, Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said when meeting with Cuban Interior Minister Abelardo Colome Ibarra.Hailing the traditional friendship between China and Cuba, Zhou spoke highly of Cuba's efforts to cope with the international financial crisis and natural disasters.He also applauded Cuba's achievements in social and economic progress.Colome, also vice president of the Council of State of Cuba, said he was encouraged by China's achievements and his country will firmly support China in issues concerning its core interests.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Devastating mud-slides triggered by historic rainfalls were blamed for the heavy casualty toll -- 70 dead and 65 missing -- in south China's Guangdong Province when typhoon Fanapi battered the region earlier this week, a government report said Saturday.The loss caused by mud-flows and landslides in Guangdong's mountainous western region is "very serious", said a disaster assessment report conducted by provincial disaster relief authorities. "Large-scale mud-slides occurred in many places, cutting off traffic and communications to towns and villages."In Magui Township, Gaochuan City alone, mud-slides left 66 dead or missing, it added. A military helicopter is seen on a drop-off point in Xinyi, south China's Guangdong Province, Sept. 25, 2010. No casualties have been reported in Fujian.In the country's most devastating mud-slides in decades, nearly 2,000 people were killed in Zhouqu, Guansu Province after days of torrential rains poured the region in early August this year.

ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. Women should be encouraged, she said, to gain the spirit of self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance.Chen also urged countries around the world to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in policy-making regarding gender equality.
