The City of San Diego is inviting residents to donate big items at a recycling event Saturday. Disposal services will be available at SDCCU Stadium in Mission Valley from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. City of San Diego residents can drop off appliances, furniture, electronics, televisions, and other bulky belongings. Smaller recyclable items including batteries and light bulbs will also be accepted. Goodwill Industries of San Diego County and Urban Corps of San Diego will accept items and mattresses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hate crime charges were filed against two men accused of assaulting a Black journalist who was covering a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Imperial Beach in June.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced felony assault and battery charges, and hate crime allegations, were filed against 38-year-old Jeffrey Brooks and 32-year-old Henry Brooks Jr. in connection with the June 7 incident at a beach near Veterans Park.Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.RELATED: Man says he was sucker punched at Imperial Beach protestThe DA’s Office alleged Brooks and Brooks Jr. were at the peaceful march in Imperial Beach when they began “verbally and physically antagonizing the protesters.”At one point, Brooks Jr. allegedly threw eggs at a group of protesters.“While recording the scene, the victim was sucker punched in the head by Jeffrey Brooks, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground,” the DA’s Office said in a news release.If convicted of all charges, Brooks faces three years in custody; Brooks Jr. faces six years.District Attorney Summer Stephan said, “Protecting our community from hate crimes is a priority for my office because hate erodes our right to equality and fairness, and it leaves an impact on the victim and everyone who shares the victim’s race. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Efforts to streamline the construction of a massive transportation hub in the Midway District and update the Navy's Old Town campus have been approved by the state.Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2731 this week, which will allow the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) to quicken the environmental review process in order to build a transit hub connecting to San Diego International Airport and redevelop the Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) Old Town campus site, should the Navy partner with SANDAG.The bill, introduced by California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria and Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), will allow SANDAG to use the Navy's environmental document as the basis of its California Environmental Quality Act document and requires most legal actions over the project to be resolved in 270 days.RELATED: Mayor Faulconer, Acting Navy Sec. agree to make NAVWAR facility a transit hubThe bill will also require the transit hub to meet high environmental benchmarks, such as LEED Gold certification, reducing vehicle miles by 25%, and be greenhouse gas neutral in exchange for the streamlined environmental process."This bill represents a unique opportunity to protect the existing 5,000 Navy jobs from relocation, create a 21st-century transportation system in San Diego, and provide desperately needed economic stimulus to our local economy in the wake of COVID-19," said Gloria. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Firefighters have extinguished the fire that caused a hotel near Harbor Island Park to be evacuated Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters say the two-alarm fire broke out at the Sheraton on the 1300 block of Harbor Island Drive. No one was injured, but the fire, which took place in the hotel's elevator shaft, caused at least 0,000 in damage. Firefighters were alerted to the fire after they say people reported heavy smoke coming from the elevator shaft.At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown.  551

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of people came out to see a country music concert at Moonshine Beach in Pacific Beach Thursday night.The concert was scheduled before the Borderline Bar and Grill shooting in Thousand Oaks Thursday night.  Brodie Stewart was opening for Colt Ford.Country Music Stewart told 10News ahead of the show he would hold a moment of silence for the victims of Borderline during his show. He also said proceeds from his merchandise sales would also be donated to victim’s families.“It’s hard to talk about because it’s so close for our friends and the country music community,” Stewart said. “It’s been devastating.”Becky Williams, a long-time country music fan, said it’s unfortunate that it was the second attack in a country music venue in just a little over a year.  The Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas in October 2017, was the deadliest attack by a lone gunman in America.  Despite the repeated attacks, Williams said that she didn’t think twice about attending the concert Thursday night.“Heck no, country music is my life,” Williams told 10News.Survivors from the Las Vegas shooting said the Borderline shooting reopened old wounds and churned up former emotions.“I still haven’t been able to really cope with it, and it brought that back up to the surface,” said Kyle Hurd, who survived the Las Vegas shooting.Others shared the same sentiment, saying it was the best place anyone part of the country music could be.“We love that we can get together and mourn together and we understand each other,” Kimberly Burroughs said. 1578
