BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) - As China's urban population reached 46 percent of the total population last year, Chinese urban dwellers became the largest such population in the world, according to a 'blue paper' released on Thursday.By the end of 2009, China's urban population reached 620 million as both the annual birth rate and the total urban population became the world' s largest, according to "City' s Blue Book: China's Urban Development Report No. 3," which has been released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Social Sciences Academic Press.It said China's urban population is twice that of the population of the United States and one quarter more than the total population of 27 countries of the European Union.By 2015, urban residents in China will make up about 52 percent, and by 2030, 65 percent of the total population in the country, it said."A milestone change for urban development will take place when urban people make up more than 50 percent of the population and thus surpass the number of rural people," the paper said."The 50-percent point phenomenon will occur in the mid-12th Development Program period (2011-2015) when both the number of urban and rural Chinese will reach 680 million," it said.The role of the urban economy will be further strengthened by that time, it said, adding that the urban economy would continue to drive the domestic demand.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign exchange regulator said Thursday it will strengthen monitoring of cross-border capital flows to reduce risk.The regulator will keep a close watch on the economic and financial situation home and abroad this year, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said in its annual report on management of foreign exchange posted on its website.It will also enhance its monitoring of abnormal cross-border capital flows by cracking down on illegal private banks and internet-based speculation in foreign exchange.The SAFE will maintain a prudent approach to managing foreign currency reserves and will continue to improve its diversification strategy.China's balance of payments continue to expand, albeit slowly, despite the impact of the global financial crisis.At the end of 2009, China's foreign exchange reserves hit 2.4 trillion U.S. dollars, a 453 billion U.S. dollar increase from the end of 2008.China had gold reserves of 1,054 tonnes at the end of last year, the fifth largest in the world.Although gold has commodity and monetary properties, the global gold market is relatively small and illiquid, the report noted, adding that because of its volatile price and high cost of holding and trading, gold has limited utility in asset allocation.

ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development.The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. China is still a developing country, and even if it becomes a developed country in the future, it will still stick to the road of peaceful development and will not seek hegemony."It is the solemn commitment made by the Chinese government to the outside world," he said.
