BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 28-month high of 5.1 percent in November, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Saturday.The growth rate picked up from 4.4 percent in October, according to the NBS. The inflation was driven by a 11.7 percent of surge in food prices, which accounts for one third of the basket of goods used to calculate China's CPI.The year-on-year increase in food prices grew from rises of 10.1 percent in October, 8 percent in September and 7.5 percent in August.From January to November, China's CPI rose 3.2 percent year on year, surpassing the government's target ceiling of 3 percent for the year.The producer price index (PPI) for China's industrial products rose 6.1 percent year on year in November, compared with a 5.0 percent gain in October.

BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top judge, Wang Shengjun, on Monday urged the nation's courts to pay close attention to the impact on people's standards of living caused by recent price hikes.Also, the courts should properly handle disputes regarding employment, social security, education, medical treatment, housing and consumption sectors, in an effort to safeguard people's vital interests, said Wang, President of the Supreme People's Court of China, at a meeting attended by presidents from the countrywide high courts.Further, the Supreme People's Court urged local authorities to crack down on telecom and internet fraud, the fight against production and sales of poisonous food and fake medicine, and ensuring the safety of people's health and property, according to Wang.All courts should also properly handle disputes concerning farmers' rights and interests, including cases relating to the sale of agricultural products and pay to migrant workers, Wang said.Wang also urged the courts in various regions to take an active part in the country's efforts in protecting intellectual property rights and environmental protection, and hand down severe punishments for work-related crimes.As to people's letters and appeals to the higher authorities for help, Wang said the courts and police officers should speed up dealing with long-pending cases, and resolve problems and complaints from people.Statistics from the Supreme People's Court showed that in the first 11 months of this year, courts at various levels had received 9,754,141 cases and completed handling 8,967,396 cases, up 0.15 percent and 2.14 percent year-on-year.Wang also said the courts had played an effective role in serving economic and social progress.

HAIKOU, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China will provide more support for the country's religious communities in their international exchanges and communications, said Wang Zuoan, director of the State Administration for Religious Affairs.Wang made the remarks at the 2011 national conference on religious work held in South China' s Hainan Province on Monday.The administration will actively support religious circles in China to promote the concept of religious harmony during the first World Interfaith Harmony Week, which has been recognized by the United Nations and will be held in the first week of February, Wang said.Additionally, Wang said that the country is working to streamline the social security system to further benefit religious personnel.

  

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said more follow-up efforts should be scientifically made to ensure the Three Gorges' continuing safe operations and to make full use of the project after its preliminary construction is finished on time.Li made the remarks while chairing the 17th plenary meeting of the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee under the State Council, or the cabinet.The meeting discussed the examination and acceptance report of the project and the follow-up layouts.The preliminary design and construction of the Three Gorges were finished on time and the project reflects the good quality of the construction, in general, which worked well in flood control, while having generated more than 400 billion kilowatts of power, according to reports from the meeting.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (C) presides over the 17th plenary meeting of the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee under the State Council, in Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 30, 2010. SINGAPORE, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here on Monday with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Both leaders reaffirmed the close and cooperative relationship shared by Singapore and China.Xi's visit caps a series of high level exchanges as the two countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties. During the meeting, Xi said China and Singapore have increased mutual understanding and expanded cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations. China has drawn useful experience from Singapore's development as it undertakes reform, opening-up and the modernization drive. At the same time, China's increasing national power has provided broad market and huge potential for Singapore's continuous development.The good neighborly and mutually beneficial cooperation contributes to the interests of both people, and to the peace and prosperity of Asia as a whole, he said.Xi said China highly values the Sino-Singapore relationship and is willing to join hands with Singapore to bring the bilateral relations to a new level. He noted that the two countries should maintain high level exchanges, make full use of the existing bilateral cooperative mechanisms and projects, increase sharing of governing experiences and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, strengthen cooperation in regional and international affairs.Lee agreed with Xi on his suggestions to develop bilateral relations. He said the two countries have forged close cooperation in various areas, adding that Singapore is willing to further enhance cooperation with China in bilateral and multi-lateral areas.After the meeting, Lee and Xi witnessed the signing of the following three agreements: the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Heritage Board of the Republic of Singapore and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of the People's Republic of China on Museum Cooperation; the Agreement on the Details of Implementation between the National University of Singapore and Suzhou Municipal Government (Suzhou Industrial Park Administrative Committee) on the Joint Establishment of the National University of Singapore (Suzhou) Research Institute; and the MOU on the Establishment of a Cooperative College by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city.At the invitation of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Xi arrived in Singapore on Sunday for a three-day official visit.
