LITHIA, Fla. — A Tampa Bay teenager is thankful for the device on her wrist after suffering a scary medical episode at The Crossing Church in Brandon, Florida. "I didn't know what was going on at all and it was just out of the blue," Deanna Recktenwald said. A warning appeared notifying the 18-year-old that her resting heart rate hit 190 beats per minute. "It was alarming that the watch was telling us to seek medical attention," said Stacey Recktenwald, Deanna's mother. "I didn't even know that it had the capability of giving us that alert."Stacey Recktenwald is a registered nurse and did not initially question the accuracy of the watch's reading. Staff at a walk-in clinic confirmed the teen's rapid heartbeat. "I was surprised, it was right on," said Stacey.The Recktenwald's said the watch saved Deanna's life. After arriving at the emergency room, doctors at Tampa General Hospital soon discovered Deanna suffers from chronic kidney disease. Both kidneys are only operating at 20 percent and she will likely require a future transplant. "Instantly started to pray and thank God for her having that watch," said Tom Recktenwald, Deanna's father. The high-tech Christmas gift came to the rescue, uncovering a serious health problem that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. "Now that we have some answers to why this is happening we can prevent something major from happening down the road," said Deanna. Stacey Recktenwald recently wrote Apple to thank the tech giant for its life-saving feature.  1601

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — East County residents say they're behind a local dog rescue's efforts to provide for canines, but that the facility has been operating dangerously.Suzy Avalos lives next door to the Happy Hearts German Shepherd Rescue, which is run out of a La Mesa home. She tells 10News the dogs that reside in the yard have had no problem jumping the fence."You see the fence is not high. It's right up here. The dogs don't have a problem jumping over this fence," Avalos said. "I've lived here for 10 years and it's just progressively getting worse."RELATED: Disease fatal to dogs that can spread to humans on the rise in some statesWhen the dogs escape they can also be aggressive, neighbors say, with at least one dangerous incident being recorded. 10News obtained records from the La Mesa Police Department showing at least 28 instances where officers responded to the dog rescue to help round up escaped canines or help people who say they were attacked by the dogs."We have a lot of people on this street that have young kids and I'm just worried a child is going to get bit or something worse is going to happen," Avalos said. "They're out of control and she should not have a license."The woman who runs the dog rescue, Donna, declined an interview by 10News. LANCASTER, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man whose body was found in a stone pillar in Lancaster Saturday could be the remains of a man who ran from police earlier in the week, according to KTLA. The body was found inside a stone pillar outside the WinCo Foods grocery store on the 700 block of West Avenue K around 2:40 p.m. Saturday.Earlier that morning, a manager at the store reported a foul smell coming from the pillar. The manager called a plumber thinking there was a sewage problem.When the plumber arrived and began knocking away the pillar’s stone, a leg and tennis shoes were visible. After arriving on scene, police were able to link the body to an incident earlier in the week.On Monday, a man was pulled over after being suspected of driving a stolen vehicle, police told KTLA. The man ran from police onto the rooftop of the grocery store which, according to authorities, has access to the inside of the pillars.Police say it’s possible that the man fell or climbed into one of the pillars to escape from authorities. With a recent heat wave and the density of the pillars, police say it’s possible the man became trapped and unable to breathe. 1167

(KGTV) - A speeding U-Haul truck turned a neighborhood near La Mesa into a dumping ground Saturday afternoon. Along Tropico Drive, the sound of a speeding vehicle - and then a loud thud - startled Steve Haase in his driveway.  In the middle of the road was a couch, carpet padding, tile and a painting.    Haase lives on a cul-de-sac, so he knew the vehicle would have to come back around.  Haase walked into the road, and saw a mid-sized U-Haul truck.  He saw two men in their early 20s inside, laughing."They're coming down the street and I put my hand up.  They stop, but they get close, so I get out of the way. I then asked him if he was going to pick it up.  They said, 'Of course,' and then took off with big speed," said Haase.  810

(KGTV) — Firefighters say a four-acre brush fire that ignited above a neighborhood on Saturday was sparked by a metal grinder.The Cordial Fire broke out at about on a hillside near Cordial Road and Avenida Del Charro just before 4 p.m. The fire originally began with moderate rate of spread before crews quickly stamped it out and prevented flames from threatening structures.Firefighters said the fire began after a metal grinder sparked dry grass."A small mishap can have disastrous effects, especially this time of year. Please be fire safe in everything you do," a tweet from CAL FIRE San Diego said.A fire crew was set to stay on scene into the evening to mop up the area. 702
