On one of the islands of the Florida Keys, there’s a small animal that’s causing a big stir. “You know, I love the Key Deer, they’re just, they’re warm and fuzzy,” said Cathy Rhoades, who runs the Florida Keys Wildlife Society. “We do consider them a national treasure,” said Kristie Killam with US Fish and Wildlife. The Key Deer. It’s a little known species of deer that’s native to the island chain. The animal is very small compared to its cousins on the mainland. “The small ones, can get pretty – 2 to 4 pounds at birth," explained Killam. "Some of the tinier ones that look almost like a house cat. Some of the itty bitty fawns." For more than 50 years, the baby Bambi has been a member of the endangered species act. The population declined in the 40s and 50s by hunting. “To the point there was only about 25 to 50 Key Deer left in the wild were the estimates,” said Killam. But they could be removed from the endangered species list. They are recommended on the 3-year work plan for US Fish and Wildlife for de-listing due to recovery. They’re just one of 55 species included in the report. But the tiny animal is incredibly important to Vivian Beck. "They’re just so unique that they literally live among us, or I should say we live among them, and they’re adapting,” said Beck. She’s the president of the Key Deer Protection Alliance, an organization dedicated to keeping the Key Deer protected. Beck thinks removing the animal from the list is premature. US Fish and Wildlife estimates there are between 600 and 800 deer on the island. She says she’s been told as many as 1,000 deer. “Texas A&M said there were 573, so our numbers didn’t match up at all,” said Beck. While the Department of Fish and Wildlife did give us an interview to discuss the deer’s history and biology, they said they can’t comment on an ongoing species assessment. For those that live in the Florida Keys, they just want the assessment to reflect the truth. “That’s the process I would like to see happen, just get more information, more information and refine your thinking based on the information that you have,” said Rhoades.“The Key Deer are one storm and one disease away from total extinction,” said Beck.  2230

A Southern Arizona school district is taking a creative approach to better sanitize the classroom daily.Santa Cruz Valley School District bought six Power Breezers that will disinfect a classroom in 20 minutes.Superintendent David Verdugo said the school district did this as a cost effective way to provide extra safety and security to students and staff.He said it will be used after school to clean empty classrooms, hallways and even school buses.Each unit costs about 4,500 dollars."This is an opportunity for them to look at a way to sanitize a room in a short period of time and utilize their staff but also be cost effective," Superintendent Verdugo said.He said the district is also requiring all students to wear masks, have their temperature checked, and social distance in and out of the classroom.Every classroom will only be at 50% capacity, meaning 15 desks per room, he said. In order to do this, the district came up with a hybrid approach to learning."There will be a group A and a group B," Superintendent Verdugo said. "The group A students will be on Monday. They will come to school, have their direct instruction and then they will be at home the next day. Then, group B will come to school, but they will still have some interaction that day with assignments and virtual opportunities."He said the district is planning on starting remote learning on August 3 and then the hybrid approach will being on August 31. I’ve been reluctant to put my feelings into words. My brain refuses to accept that both Kobe and Gigi are gone. I can’t process both at the same time. It’s like I’m trying to process Kobe being gone but my body refuses to accept my Gigi will never come back to me. It feels wrong. Why should I be able to wake up another day when my baby girl isn’t being able to have that opportunity?! I’m so mad. She had so much life to live. Then I realize I need to be strong and be here for my 3 daughters. Mad I’m not with Kobe and Gigi but thankful I’m here with Natalia, Bianka and Capri. I know what I’m feeling is normal. It’s part of the grieving process. I just wanted to share in case there’s anyone out there that’s experienced a loss like this. God I wish they were here and this nightmare would be over. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — There is a group of retired ladies living in a Pinellas County RV park who have formed their own assembly line when it comes to making masks.They call themselves the Crafty Ladies of Sherwood Forrest RV Resort. They are making hundreds of masks a week, and because the bulk of them go to our veterans, patriotism is a big deal.The red, white and blue runs deep not just in their fabric but their spirit.“I feel helpless with what’s going on with the Covid and this is my tiny little way of contributing,” said Micheal Barsi.Barsi is one of more than a dozen residents who are part of the group. Most of them have two main things in common, they are skilled with a sewing machine and are part of a military family.For the past six years, the Crafty Ladies have been making quilts for the Service Source organization, Veterans Mall. However, when the pandemic hit, they shifted their needle and thread to make masks for veterans.“They had to sacrifice and people who had to sacrifice I want to help as much as I can,” said Nancy Barandon.The Crafty Ladies said the best part is the camaraderie, working together on a project that could save lives.“It does make us feel good to see people using them,” said Jeannie Powell. Bill Chavez has always been fascinated with big trucks. He comes from a long line of truckers, which is one of the reasons he’s devoted his life for 39 years to the profession. To most people, Chavez’s truck looks like any traditional semi. However, it’s not ordinary, because with a push of a button, it can drive itself. “What we’re trying to do is create the world’s safest self-driving trucks,” says Chuck Price, the chief product officer of TuSimple, the company behind the self-driving semis. TuSimple is currently operating 15 self-driving semis, and Price says by June, they'll have three times that number. “This is actually a laser radar unit; we call it lidar, built into the mirror. This gives us a close-in view,” Price describes. “Then, we have cameras along the top of the vehicle that show us…much further away.” TuSimple’s trucks are already in the southwest part of the country, on interstates across the region. "Our systems see farther, track more objects and respond faster than a human can operate," Price says. Right now, a human must be in the trucks at all times as back-up protocol, but the company says a fully self-driving semi could happen by 2020. The company says when that day comes, it will alleviate one of the industry's biggest problems.Tony Bradley, with the Arizona Trucking Association, says nationwide they're currently 50,000 drivers short. "This is the worst shortage we've seen in the history of trucking,” Bradley stresses. Bradley says 15 years from now, the shortage could be as high as 200,000, thanks to the large number of drivers approaching retirement age. "It's a job that is frankly, not very glamorous," Bradley says. However, the job continues to be appealing to Chavez. "It's just very enjoyable to be out there on the road and being your own boss," Chavez says. He knows that a time may come where drivers might be replaced by this technology. However, he's OK with that idea and says roads will be safer for everyone. "This is a system that's gonna help,” he says. “Either way, it’s helping," Chavez says.However, he says that day is much further down the road. 2133
