(KGTV) - The F-35C landed in Miramar Tuesday, the first of it's kind for the Department of Defense, according to officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.UPDATE: Officials later clarified the F-35C arriving at Miramar was the first for the Marine Corps.There are three versions of the F-35 Lightning II. The F-35C is the "carrier version", the largest of it's kind and able to land on an aircraft carrier's runway.The fighter jet is the most advanced in the military, "everything you look at is displayed in the helmet, I mean it's like in the movies," Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Cedar Hinton, USMC said.Hinton is the newest commander of the Black Knight Squadron at MCAS Miramar, who will inherit the incoming F-35Cs."This is an exciting time in the Black Knight history. This squadron was stood up in WWII like a lot of squadrons, this particular squadron's able to break a lot of milestones." He mentioned milestones that started in the 1950's with the F-9F Panther. That was the "Navy’s first successful carrier-based jet fighter" and landed with the Black Knights at Miramar. Then in the 1960's the squadron was the first in the Marine Corps to fly the F-4B Phantom.In the 1980's they were the first to fly the F/A-18.The F-35 got it's first test in combat in 2018, deploying to Afghanistan, and then in Iraq a year later."They've had some pretty good success with it, I mean it does what we paid for it to do," Lt. Col. Hinton said.It's record isn't pristine. The jet faced scrutiny when it suffered mechanical failures during development. In 2018, an F-35 crashed in South Carolina."I mean single engine airplane, but this engine is by far probably the most advance engine ever built... That engine is more reliable than two engines on an F-18 I'd say," Lt. Col. Hinton said.Miramar has been waiting for this moment since they retired the F/A-18 Hornet last June.Miramar will get another F-35C next week, and a third in March. Now, scientists say they've discovered “zombie cicadas.”It's a playful name from researchers at West Virginia University, who say they've found that a parasitic fungus, called Massospora, can play mind games on cicadas, causing them to infect others.Researcher showed that the psychedelic fungus can manipulate male cicadas into flicking their wings like females – a mating call – which tempts unsuspecting male cicadas and infects them.The fungus contains chemicals like those found in hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to research published in the journal PLOS Pathogens.“Essentially, the cicadas are luring others into becoming infected because their healthy counterparts are interested in mating,” said Brian Lovett, study co-author and post-doctoral researcher with the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design. “The bioactive compounds may manipulate the insect to stay awake and continue to transmit the pathogen for longer.”The authors of the study compared the effects of the fungus to a “B-horror movie.” Massospora spores gnaw away at a cicada’s genitals, butt and abdomen, replacing them with fungal spores. Then, Lovett says they “wear away like an eraser on a pencil.”Lovett also compared the transmission of the behavior-modifying virus to rabies. He says both rabies and entomopathogenic fungi enlist their living hosts for successful “active host transmission.”“When you're infected with rabies, you become aggressive, you become afraid of water and you don't swallow,” Lovett said. “The virus is passed through saliva and all of those symptoms essentially turn you into a rabies-spreading machine where you're more likely to bite people."In that sense, Lovett says many of us are familiar with active host transmission.“Since we are also animals like insects, we like to think we have complete control over our decisions and we take our freewill for granted,” he said. “But when these pathogens infect cicadas, it's very clear that the pathogen is pulling the behavioral levers of the cicada to cause it to do things which are not in the interest of the cicada but is very much in the interest of the pathogen.”Researchers say cicada nymphs could encounter Massospora in their 17th year as they emerge from the ground to molt into adults or on their way down to feed on roots for 17 years.“The fungus could more or less lay in wait inside its host for the next 17 years until something awakens it, perhaps a hormone cue, where it possibly lays dormant and asymptomatic in its cicada host,” said co-author Matthew Kasson.As grotesque as an infected decaying cicada sounds, researchers say they’re generally harmless to humans. They also reproduce at such a rate that the fungi’s extermination of hordes of cicadas has little effect on their overall population.“They're very docile,” Lovett said. “You can walk right up to one, pick it up to see if it has the fungus (a white to yellowish plug on its back end) and set it back down. More than one in three Americans have delayed a life event or financial milestone because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new survey.Bankrate surveyed about 2,500 Americans in late June. They found 36 percent of participants admitted they have delayed getting married, having a child, buying a home, retiring or another major financial life step.Of those who delayed buying a home, they expect the delay to last six months or longer. MISSION BEACH (CNS) - A man robbed a Subway sandwich shop in Mission Beach Saturday afternoon, police said.Police were told a little before 1 p.m. that a man in his 30s had walked into a the Subway on West Mission Bay Drive near Mission Boulevard and threatened the clerk, San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster said.The man "simulated" having a weapon in his pocked and demanded money, Foster said. The clerk complied and the man left the business on foot. He was last seen heading north away from the store.The suspect was described only as a man in his 30s, according to Foster. A man was wanted in a similar robbery of a Subway last Sunday, though detectives weren't available for comment on whether the two cases were related.The robber in the Sunday case was also described as a man in his 30s and reportedly simulated having a gun in his waistband. That same suspect was wanted for two other robberies of Game Stop stores, one on Sunday and the other on Wednesday, Dec. 19. 987
