SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Iconic TV host Regis Philbin, who has roots in San Diego television history, has died at the age of 88, multiple news outlets report.According to a family statement obtained by PEOPLE, Philbin passed away from natural causes Friday night.Philbin returned to his roots in 2018 with a visit to 10News.After a stint in the United States Navy, he moved to San Diego where he launched a career in broadcast. He was able to book many top celebrities including Jerry Lewis, Ronald Reagan, Danny Thomas, and Liberace.His talk show, which was produced at the now KGTV studios from 1961 to 1965, aired live from 11:30 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. every Saturday night."The show became a big hit so it was time to go to Hollywood, I guess, so I did," said Philbin.Philbin moved his show to Los Angeles, before being hired in 1967 as the sidekick for a national talk show, "The Joey Bishop Show." Cain says it was his friendly personality, that she’ll remember most."It brought back all the memories of when I hosted the show with him and what a great person he was I’m sad. I’m really sad,” says Cain. "He was the most kind man. He was a small man. But so handsome and I just remember thinking after I had left that I had known him my whole life. That’s how he made you feel. I felt equal to him. It was a special moment for me."And that’s the same way Fred Norfleet described Philbin, who he worked with for years as a stage manager on his San Diego morning show."I’m sure he had a heart for San Diego you now. Everybody knew him. Everybody liked him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just a few weeks ago, coronavirus testing was hard to come by. But now, many San Diegans are finding it easier to get tested. Some are purchasing at-home test kits online, at no up-front cost.Raechel Kadoya is not a clinician, nor is she at a doctor's office. She is the co-owner of Soichi Sushi, giving herself a COVID-19 test."I want to take advantage of being proactive," Kadoya said as she swabbed her nose.Since the modified re-opening of her restaurant in University Heights, she and her staff have been cautious about coronavirus exposure. That is why she ordered the Pixel by Labcorp at-home COVID-19 test kit for her entire staff."I think that it is my responsibility as a business owner, not only to my staff but to my customers and my family, to make sure that everybody is doing business here safely," Kadoya said.This is the staff's second round of testing. Kadoya said the first one required multiple doctors referrals just to get a drive-through appointment an hour away."We were able to find a place in Lake Elsinore, so we all had to drive up there," Kadoya said.Dr. Abi Olulade, a family medicine physician at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said the accessibility of these at-home tests is a big draw."It definitely is something that is very convenient for consumers," Dr. Olulade said.But she suggested customers do their homework before they order."They should be looking at whether or not the tests that they are using have been FDA authorized, and it's not just some random test that they found on the internet," Dr. Olulade said.As of June 12, 2020, seven at-home COVID-19 test kits have the FDA's emergency use authorization. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Isabel Rosales was brutally attacked and nearly killed by her husband in January 2018."It was life or death, my ex husband attacked me in front of my kids," said Rosales.Rosales was married for 16 years. She and her ex-husband moved from Chicago to San Diego for a fresh start. But Rosales says the abuse only got worse."Sexual abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse, everything," said RosalesShortly after their 16-year anniversary Rosales told her Ex-husband she wanted a divorce. She barely made it out of the family home alive."I was getting ready to go to work and we had been arguing...his behavior had been kind of erratic over the last few weeks. I thought he was agreeing with me when he said it ends here. I thought he was getting his suitcase and leaving. He followed me into the bathroom and he stabbed me. I ran into the kid's room and he stabbed me in front of the kids who were sleeping. I was able to push him out of the way and I ran out of the house. Before I ran out of the house though he attacked me again at the front door. I knew if I didn't make it out of the door it was over and by the grace of God the door opened."Rosales was in the ICU at UCSD for three days with a breathing tube. She says she fought to stay alive for her three children and her mother, who was killed by her boyfriend in 2011."My mother was murdered by her boyfriend in Mexico. And my ex-husband attacked me in a very similar way."Rosales says she had what her mother did not. Help. Hers came in the form of Operation for Hope, a San Diego non-profit that helps provide emergency services to victims of domestic abuse. Rosales was given emergency shelter and money to pay for a divorce attorney."It helped me have a future. It gave me exactly what it promises- HOPE."Rosales has this advice for other survivors."I was ashamed to ask for help. I didn't know services like this exist. I am here to tell you there's great courage in asking for help and taking that first step... I hope and I pray to change one other person's world out there by sharing my story. My heart aches for those who do not make it like my mom, for those who do not know how to get out or where to go, for those that think an abusive relationship is normal. Anything is possible and each and every person is deserving of a beautiful and safe life... I am happy now. These tears are tears of joy."During the pandemic, domestic violence incidents have increased. From January to June 2020, there were 8,495 domestic violence incidents reported to law enforcement in San Diego County, as compared to 8,235 during the same period in 2019; a 3% increase from the prior year according to the San Diego County District Attorney's office. The three or four shifts they thought they’d get each week at La Puerta could instead be reduced to one, if that.“The hardest part is just the emotions and the mental health of the people working in the industry,” Powell said.It’s because San Diego County is in danger of falling into the state’s most restrictive purple tier of coronavirus restrictions, which would ban restaurants from serving indoors. That would be the latest setback in the region's push to return to normal amid the outbreak.“It feels like they're just playing games with us at this point, and it's getting frustrating,” Powell said.The twists and turns are taking a big toll, not just on day-to-day operations, but also when it comes to hiring in the future.“You're not going to hire people back, you're being extremely cautious,” said Ray Major, SANDAG’s chief economist.Major said restaurant owners have it especially hard.
