ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Encinitas family is thanking surfing legend Laird Hamilton after they say he rescued them during a flood while on vacation in Kauai. The Gwilliam family says they were enjoying a normal vacation on the island when, like usual, it started to rain. The family says they weren’t worried until the heavy rain got even heavier. “It was the type of rain that was so heavy, we would say there’s no way I could get worse," recouted Erin Gwilliam. "Then it got worse."The family says so much rain had fallen, the ground was no longer absorbing the water. That’s when the trouble started.Erin and her husband Jamas took photos of the homes all around them, some of which collapsed from the strong floodwaters. The only bridge in and out of the small town of Hanalei was covered by several feet of water. By the end of their trip, not only had the Gwilliam family run out of food, they also needed to catch their flight. The family was almost out of time when a friend called with a plan. The plan? Big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton.Erin says her family was a little star struck. "Being in the same boat as him was a little intimidating, but he didn't let that be, it was just like hurry get on we gotta go.”Hamilton took them to safety across the river and to a dock where the family was able to drive to the airport.Erin says she is thankful the surfer came to save them from a dangerous situation. “The ocean and water is his life he was so comfortable and confident in what he was doing, he was extremely capable, having him get you out it was a huge relief.”Due to the severe damage, Hamilton and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - An employee at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Parish in Fallbrook has been suspended after allegations of sexually inappropriate dating app chats were revealed in a video released by a vigilante group that conducts stings to catch suspected predators. 10News is not revealing the name of the employee because he has not been charged with a crime.A spokesperson for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego confirmed the employee's suspension, telling 10News the church pastor called the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to report the employee after seeing the video posted on social media Saturday morning. The video was captured Nov. 21 by a group calling itself the "CC Unit" -- "CC" stands for "Creep Catching." The group has posted more than 60 videos over the past year, including one that led to the court martial of a Camp Pendleton Marine. In an interview with 10News, the group's leader, who asked to be identified as "Ghost," said they create profiles on dating sites. When someone reaches out, the CC Unit decoy claims to be a minor. In this particular case, Ghost claimed to be 14. Ghost said the conversation turned sexual, with the employee asking for nude pictures and eventually a meet-up. When he arrived for the meeting at a grocery store, instead of a 14-year-old boy, he was confronted by several men who were recording on their phones. The video stretches for several minutes as the employee tries to evade the CC Unit. "He was denying we had his pictures, we had his chat logs," Ghost said. "I was like 'OK, if you're so afraid, if you don't know what's going on, why don't you call the police because that's what any normal human being would do?'"Ghost admits that law enforcement does not approve of his actions. Criminal defense attorney Guadalupe Valencia told 10News that vigilante groups make the job of law enforcement harder and can jeopardize criminal investigations and prosecutions. "They can cause this person to maybe go free of prosecution because they mishandled the situation. That's a really big danger," said Valencia. Valencia said the CC Unit members could be opening up themselves to criminal charges or civil liability.Despite the criticism, Ghost said he stands by his actions. "They say it makes it harder for them, but I haven't seen them do as much work as I have done over the past year. I think the slaps on the wrist they (sexual predators) get right now is nothing compared to the embarrassment they go through when I expose them," said Ghost. 2532

ESPN is expected to cut at least another 100 employees after Thanksgiving, marking the company's third round of layoffs in the last three years, Sports Illustrated reported on Thursday. According to SI, the layoffs are expected to include several anchors from ESPN's longest-running program "SportsCenter." The layoffs are also expected to include other employees such as producers, executives and other staffers, SI reported. The layoffs to end 2017 come just seven months after ESPN laid off nearly 100 reporters from its roster. Among those laid off were basketball reporter Andy Katz, baseball reporter Jayson Stark and SportsCenter anchor Jay Crawford, to name a few. In 2015, ESPN laid off 300 employees, most of whom were behind the scenes staff. In recent years, ESPN has had to combat rising fees to carry live sports, coupled with a decline in cable television subscriptions. According to eMarketer, nearly 22 million former cable subscribers have "cut the cord" in recent years.   1034

Every year, millions of kids across the country look forward to dressing up, knocking on doors and celebrating Halloween with lots of candy. But this year, the pandemic is likely changing some of those celebrations. So, is it still possible to celebrate Halloween this year?"That's a great question. I'm not just a doctor, but I'm also a parent to three young boys who are of trick-or-treating age. So, it's certainly a question that gets asked a lot in my wife's pediatric practice, as well,” said Dr. Kenny Banh, an emergency room physician and assistant dean of undergraduate medical education at UCSF-Fresno. “I have to say, I don't want to give a blanket answer, because it really depends on where you are and what the numbers are."Dr. Banh says there are ways to trick-or-treat this Halloween, but you first have to look at your local city and county ordinances."There’s simple things of just maintaining the guidelines. How do you do a mask? There are ways to incorporate masks in a costume and make sure we make or get costumes with masks integrated into them and trying to maintain social distancing,” suggested Dr. Banh. “The good thing about candy is years ago we moved away from homemade candies. Almost all candy is packaged already, so that’s helpful.”Still, limiting the number of people who touch the candy is a good idea along with wiping down the packaging. If you're wanting to pass out candy this Halloween, it's best to do it with a mask on and try to limit the number of trick or treaters handling the candy."Some recommendations are prepackaged candy, give little candy gift bags people can grab as they get by, instead of having kids reach in with their hands and grabbing a bunch of stuff, or you passing out with gloves or getting tongs and just dropping them into or getting a scooper letting kids drop it in," said Dr. Banh.Dr. Banh's biggest concern is with Halloween parties."Having Halloween parties and getting kids from the neighbors or friends all together, that’s really different than you as a nuclear group going as a family going out trick-or-treating and doing it safely,” said Dr. Banh. “Trying to understand that we’re finally making some ground in many states and we can easily go backwards. Labor Day, Halloween all these things sort of letting our guard down on those aspects.”Doctors say it's important to stay vigilant when it comes to protecting yourself from coronavirus so that the only frightening things we're encountering this Halloween are scary costumes and decorations. 2530
