SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The University of California confirmed Thursday it is investigating a graduate student’s allegations that a UC regent touched her upper thigh during a dinner five years ago.Doctoral student Rebecca Ora made the claim during a public UC regents meeting Wednesday, saying Regent George Kieffer inappropriately touched her during a 2014 dinner.“This persisted throughout the evening,” Rebecca Ora said into the microphone. She said she felt “powerless to stop this figure of authority from putting his hands on my body. I told myself we were discussing the tuition of hundreds of thousands, and I should not make a scene.”RELATED: Groups threaten to sue U. of California over SAT, ACT useAfter the meeting, Kieffer denied Ora’s account to the San Francisco Chronicle. He declined to tell his side of what happened at the dinner and added he is cooperating with the UC’s investigation of “this false allegation.”Ora, who is a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, said she first tried to forget what happened, but couldn’t, and reported the incident to the university a year and a half ago.She told The Chronicle she was encouraged to resolve the dispute through “alternative resolution,” in which no investigation is conducted, but complainants and the accused instead each meet with a mediator to achieve a settlement. After nearly a year, however, the sides could not agree on what to do.RELATED: UC service, patient care workers go on strikeUC spokeswoman Claire Doan said the university has hired an outside investigator.“The University of California takes these allegations — as we do any allegations — seriously and is committed to maintaining an environment in which all students, faculty and staff are free from harassment and discrimination,” Doan said.Kieffer is the second regent in recent years who has been accused of sexual misconduct.Regent Norman Pattiz resigned in early 2018, more than a year after a recording surfaced in which he is heard asking an actress if he could hold her breasts.RELATED: UC San Diego professor develops tool to help crews fight wildfires 2122

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Uber is utilizing selfie technology to make sure both its drivers and passengers wear face masks to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The ride-sharing company has been requiring drivers and riders to wear masks since May, but only required drivers to use its technology to verify their face coverings.“Before starting to drive passengers or deliver food, they are asked to take a selfie showing their mouth and nose are covered,” Uber wrote in a press release. Now, the requirement is being expanded to passengers as well. If a driver reports that a rider isn’t wearing a mask, the rider will be required to take a selfie with their face covered before they’re able to take another trip with Uber.“With the addition of this new feature, one driver’s feedback can help ensure the safety of Uber for the next driver,” said Uber. The mask verification feature will roll out to the U.S. and Canada by the end of September, and across Latin America and other countries after that.Uber assured that the mask verification tool detects the mask as an object in the photo and does not process biometric information.“As always, riders and drivers are free to cancel a trip, without penalty, if the other person isn’t wearing a mask,” Uber wrote. “As more and more riders and drivers take their ‘second first trip,’ we hope this increased accountability provides more peace of mind.”The additional safety measures are part of Uber's efforts to rebuild a service that has seen ridership plunge by 56% in the company's most recent quarter, The Associated Press reports. 1595

Security lines and close human interaction at airports could one day be a thing of the past. With the travel industry determined to get people flying again, experts say the motivation to innovate is in overdrive.Airports have a way of fueling anxiety; one misstep can send even the most seasoned travelers into new heights of annoyance. So, could it ever be an experience we actually look forward to? The airport industry certainly hopes so.Justin Erbaci, the CEO of Los Angeles World Airports, says the innovations that land in your airport are usually tested at LAX first.“We’re using this as a platform to push forward a lot of things we wanted to push through, but there wasn’t the interest or the buy-in from government agencies or the industry, or the willingness to invest in these types of solutions,” Erbaci explained. Now, the industry is hearing customer complaints loud and clear, looking to revolutionize the airport experience.“That’s the goal for us, is to allow people to come through the airport and not have to see anyone and be able to serve themselves throughout the whole process,” he said. The first leg of your next airport experience could include the following:A touchless kiosk you can operate with your smartphone to check-in to your flightChecking luggage? This self-service system takes your bags without the need for an agent“A lot of things that are standard today seemed crazy when we first heard about them,” Erbaci said.As far as security goes, long lines leading to a TSA agent could also go away. Instead, passengers could be screened with biometric facial recognition technology. It’s already a reality at Dubai International’s smart tunnel, which the government says gets travelers through passport control in 15 seconds.LAX has tested this technology with passengers boarding flights, so they don't have to pull out their boarding pass."Through surveys, we’ve done over the years…seen people are willing to consent to give up identity aspects to get through the process faster,” Erbaci said. And carry-on bags could be screened using remotely-operated X-ray machines. While a completely self-service experience is likely several years away, changes are being implemented now to improve TSA screenings.“We have new technology that has been rolled out at dozens of airports across the country that allows the traveler to insert their ID or scan their own passport,” said TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers.Dankers says the agency is looking at innovations being used around the world.“They test to make sure they don’t compromise security in the airport environment,” she explained. “We look to those cutting-edge technologies to make sure we are on the forefront of that.“We can’t think we’re going to be able to recover from an unprecedented situation by using old methods and means. We have to change.” 2839
