SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) --- Google Inc. on Monday announced that it has agreed to buy Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for about 12. 5 billion U.S. dollars, the largest purchase for the Internet search giant that will allow it to compete more directly with other mobile phone makers.Google said that it will acquire Motorola Mobility for 40 dollars per share in cash, or a total of about 12.5 billion dollars, a premium of 63 percent to the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares last Friday.The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies and is expected to close by the end of 2011 or early 2012, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.Google noted that the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated partner of its Android mobile operating system, will enhance competition in mobile computing.Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open, Google said, adding that it will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business."Motorola Mobility's total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. BERLIN, June 9 (Xinhua) -- A 57-year-old man died of E. coli infection in Germany's Frankfurt Thursday, pushing the death toll from the bacteria to 30.The man had traveled with his wife to the city of Hamburg, an epicenter of the outbreak, Frankfurt authority said.Another two deaths were reported in the state of Lower Saxony, including a 68-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, while more than 2,800 people in 14 countries have been infected since the deadly E. coli outbroke.German researchers detected again the deadly strain o104 of E. coli on the scraps of cucumbers in a dustbin in the eastern city of Magdeburg in the state Saxony-Anhalt on Wednesday.German health minister Daniel Bahr expressed his cautious hope for the disease on Wednesday as the number of new infection is clearly going down.But he also admitted there will be new cases and more deaths have to be expected, as Germany's national disease control centre, the Robert Koch Institute reported more than 300 infection in Germany on the same day.The Robert Koch Institute also noticed the declining trend in new cases but it was not clear whether this was caused by people staying away from vegetables or the outbreak was truly waning.

It took nine months to hit one billion downloads and five billion in June 2010. In January, Apple gave a 10,000-U.S. dollar App Store gift card to a user who downloaded the 10 billionth application.In Thursday's statement, the Cupertino, California-based company said it had paid developers 2.5 billion dollars to date.Apple's mobile market place is far ahead of Google's Android Market. SAN FRANCISCO, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Google and the British Library announced Monday that the Internet search giant will digitize 250,000 out-of-copyright books from the library's collections, making up to 40 million pages from 1700 to 1870 available to the public online.In a joint statement, the British Library and Google said they will work in partnership over the coming years to deliver the content free through Google Books and the library's website, and full text search, download and reading will be available. Google will cover all digitization costs.The project is going to cover a huge range of printed books, pamphlets and periodicals dated 1700 to 1870, a period of political and technological turmoil, from the Industrial Revolution to the French Revolution, from the introduction of the income tax in Britain and the invention of the telegraph and railway.It will include material in a variety of major European languages and will focus on books that are not yet freely available in digital form online, said the statement.Since December 2004, Google has announced partnership with some 40 high-profile university and public libraries, planning to digitize and make available some 15 million volumes within a decade through Google Books service.The project has triggered controversy as publisher and author associations oppose the plan to put copyrighted titles online in a class action lawsuit.
