(KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the death from COVID-19 of a retired CHP officer and beloved grandfather.Raul Martinez first started feeling sick in late August."Really tired and a fever," said Claudia Martinez.He tested positive for coronavirus and got sicker and sicker."He started complaining about having trouble breathing and he wouldn't eat," said Martinez.A few weeks after his first symptoms, his family brought him to the ER, where he was admitted.Raul, a diabetic, received various treatments, including Remdesivir, but late last month, he was placed on a ventilator."Super scared and panicked," said Martinez.Less than 24 hours later, Raul Martinez, a retired CHP officer, died at the age of 70."It was just shock and more pain than I can describe," said Martinez.Claudia says the father of four and grandfather of nine retired from the CHP a decade ago, after three decades on the job."He took pride definitely in servicing his community. He took pride in being a just person," said Martinez.He was also a careful person. During the pandemic, he and his wife were taking all the precautions."They were staying home a lot, wearing masks," said Martinez.She has no idea where he contracted the virus. As the pandemic continues on, she has a plea for others."Please do take it seriously, if not for yourself, for your loved ones ... Think of others and wear a mask. It’s not too much to ask. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A woman accused of stealing a car containing two young children from outside a Lincoln Park cell phone store and driving to the U.S.-Mexico border, pleaded not guilty today to kidnapping and child abduction charges.RELATED: Police: Woman arrested after stealing car with kids inside, trying to cross border into Mexico?Leslie Esparanza Saenz, 26, was ordered held without bail pending a review hearing next Wednesday.  The father of the 8-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy parked his gold Hyundai Excel outside the Cricket Wireless shop in the 200 block of Euclid Avenue about 12:15 p.m. Monday and went into the business by himself, leaving the vehicle unlocked and its engine running, according to San Diego police.   Moments later, a woman who appeared to be in her late teens got into the car and drove off to the east on Imperial Avenue with the children still inside, Officer Luis Roman said.Police searched for the stolen car and missing children until shortly before 2 p.m., when the Hyundai arrived at the San Ysidro Port of Entry at the southern terminus of Interstate 5.There, federal agents who had gotten a be-on-the-lookout bulletin regarding the auto theft and kidnapping took the driver  - who was later identified as Saenz -- into custody without incident.   Authorities then reunited the children, who had suffered no injuries during the ordeal, with their father and returned his car to him, Roman said.Police have not established a motive for the alleged kidnapping. 1553

CHICAGO, Ill. – The shopping frenzy at the outset of the pandemic gave many Americans their first taste of what it’s like to not have access to basic necessities. But it’s a reality that communities of color have faced for decades.A chance errand to Chicago’s west side taught entrepreneur Liz Abunaw that access to groceries, fresh fruits and vegetables was a luxury.“I'm on a commercial corridor in a Black neighborhood and none of this stuff is readily available and it didn't sit right with me,” said Abunaw.The New York native and business school graduate decided to do something about it. She started a social enterprise to bring fresh produce to the neighborhood.“When I was thinking of a name for this business, I wanted something that was distinctly rooted in Black culture,” said Abunaw.Forty Acres Fresh Market is a reference to Special Field Orders No. 15. Issued by General William T. Sherman in 1865, it promised 40 acres of land and mules for freed slaves to settle land in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Authorities have arrested a 44-year-old Casa De Oro man in connection with his husband's murder.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Daniel Scott Jordan was taken into custody Thursday in Reno, Nevada following a joint agency investigation involving San Diego Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force in San Diego, and the USMS Fugitive Task Force in Reno."Jordan was booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility as a Fugitive from Justice and will await extradition to San Diego," said sheriff's Lt. (KGTV) - Customers narrowly avoided being hit by an out-of-control truck that struck a Chula Vista bank Tuesday, sending cash flying.Four people were using the ATMs in a vestibule at the Chase bank at 1120 Broadway about 12 p.m. when the Dodge Ram truck crashed through the glass entryway.Three customers dodged the truck, which came dangerously close to Anna Gonzalez.“I’m shaking; I have a big angel with me,” said Gonzalez.Gonzalez had tried to use an ATM but when it didn’t work, she moved to another machine. The first machine was the one hit by the pickup. Three other customers in the vestibule dodged the truck.Irene Archuleta was cut by glass from the vestibule’s shattered windows.“Regular day, going to the ATM to withdraw some money. The next you know there was a truck right next to me,” said Archuleta. “Definitely an angel looking over us.”An elderly man was injured and taken to the hospital, along with two bank employees who were in another room and thrown from their desks upon impact.There was no immediate word on the severity of the injuries.The driver, who was not identified, was not injured, according to Chula Vista Fire Captain Francisco Soto.Chula Vista Police are looking into the cause of the crash.Firefighters said the crash did not damage a load bearing wall, making it possible for them to remove debris and return cash to the bank. 1399
