BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's banking regulator asked lenders to keep credit growth at reasonable pace in 2010 and vowed to tighten supervision on property loans amid increasing risk of asset bubbles."Banks should reasonably control new loans, better manage the pace and try to achieve balanced issuance and steady growth of credit quarter by quarter, " Liu Mingkang, chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) at a meeting on Tuesday.Despite regulator's repeated warnings on risks hidden from the record 9.6 trillion yuan of new loans last year, banks rushed to lend more than 1 trillion yuan in the first month of this year in fear of the expected tighter loan policy in 2010 after the credit binge last year as media reported.An official with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China told Xinhua the credit growth in the first ten days of January was a little bit fast, and turned smooth in the last days of the month.According to the statement posted on CBRC's Web site on Wednesday, Liu said the regulator will pay special attention to the changes in the property market, strictly enforce relevant policy, and beef up the "window guidance" over credit to the real estate sector.But he restated banks should continue to support first-time home buyers.Liu also told banks to continue lending to fund rural development, small business, consumer spending and environmental protection.He said banks should keep adequate capital and heed of resurgence of bad loans.

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Han Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai, confirmed here Sunday he would lead a delegation to visit Taiwan in April to promote the upcoming World Expo.The confirmation by Han himself came on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's supreme legislature."I have been expecting for long to visit the Treasure Island of Taiwan," Han said. BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police had cracked 210 online gambling crimes and arrested 918 suspects in the 13 days ending Feb. 20, an official with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Wednesday.Gu Jian, vice director of the bureau of cyber security under the ministry, said the ministry also cracked another 122 less severe cases and punished 351 people in the same period.He did not provide further details about the cases.Eight Party departments, government ministries and financial regulatory bodies including the MPS and the People's Bank of China, jointly launched a seven-month-long nationwide campaign to curb online gambling on Feb. 8.The campaign, according to an earlier statement from the MPS, targets "major and severe cases, and would arrest domestic and foreign groups that organize online gambling and severely punish the offenders."Online gambling has seriously disturbed social and economic order, and has drawn strong complaints from the public, Gu said.

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (BOC) board has agreed to sell up to 40 billion yuan (5.86 billion U.S. dollars) of bonds convertible to A shares to improve capital adequacy.The proposal will be turned into the first temporary shareholders' meeting in 2010, which will be held on March 19, for approval.Excluding issuance costs, the proceeds from the issuance of the six-year convertible bonds will be used to replenish the bank's capital base and working capital and to lift its capital adequacy ratio, according to the BOC, the third largest lender by market value in China.The BOC has been implementing positive financial policies and relatively loose monetary policies since 2009.The BOC capital adequacy ratio stood at 11.63 percent and the core capital adequacy ratio at 9.37 percent by the end of September 2009.

GUANGZHOU, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Southern Guangdong Province launched the pilot real-name ticket system Thursday morning amid China's efforts to curb ticket hoarding by scalpers.China's first real-name ticket was booked at 7:03 a.m. by phone, confirmed the ticket booking system of Guangzhou Railway Group (GRG), operator of the province's railways.The ticket, priced at 423 yuan (61.96 U.S. dollars), was for a hard berth on a train coded K446 scheduled for Jan. 30, running from south China's Shenzhen City to northwestern Xi'an City.The real-name system covers tickets of trains scheduled for the 40-day Spring Festival travel peak starting from Jan. 30. These tickets are now available as travellers can book 10 days in advance by phone.Travellers are able to dial hot lines to book tickets and get them from wickets in railway stations or ticket agencies before midnight the day after the booking.The traveller only need to follow automated voice instructions and dial in necessary information. After the booking is accepted and processed in a computerized database, the automated voice system will issue a booking code. With the code and ID card at hand, the traveller can get his ticket from wickets in railway stations or ticket agencies."This procedure is expected to prevent long queues at the windows because most of the communication is made on phone," said Huang Xin, head of GRG's passenger transport section.The National Development and Reform Commission forecast some 210 million train trips during the Spring Festival rush, a year-on-year rise of 9.5 percent.The real-name system has drawn much attention in China. It still needs to be seen whether the system can effectively curb ticket hoarding. There are also worries that the newly introduced ID checks may paralyze railway stations because of the heavy workload involved.GRG will hold a press conference at around 9:00 a.m. on Thursday to reveal more details on the system.
