SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Bruce Carver Boynton, a civil rights pioneer who inspired the “Freedom Rides," has died at the age of 83.Former Alabama state Sen. Hank Sanders confirmed Boynton's passing Tuesday.Boynton was arrested 60 years ago for entering the white part of a racially segregated bus station in Virginia.That action began a chain reaction of events that ultimately helped to bring about the abolition of Jim Crow laws in the South.Boynton contested his conviction, and his appeal resulted in a Supreme Court decision that prohibited bus station segregation and helped inspire the landmark “Freedom Rides” of 1961. 627

SANDUSKY, Ohio - Luggage lost in the wind with a Sandusky, Ohio man's supply of life-saving medication inside.Alvin Rogers was taking the Greyhound bus from Sandusky to Pensacola, Florida in September. His headache started in Atlanta."They were telling me I couldn't go to Pensacola because of the storm," said Rogers.Rogers' insulin pens, similar to the medicine he lost in the bags that can't be found by Greyhound. Hurricane Florence delayed Rogers, but while he was stuck, Alvin was told his three bags were sent to Pensacola on another bus."I said, 'Well, how can my luggage go to Pensacola in a storm and I can't," asked Rogers. "I mean, it's still gotta be on the bus."That was the first time Rogers was separated from his bags and the thousands of dollars worth of medicine that he needed for an extended trip. When Rogers finally got to Pensacola a day later, the bags were nowhere to be found."So I had to wind up buying a plane ticket to get back to Ohio so I could get my doctors to get me some more meds," said Rogers.Rogers' bus and plane tickets bringing him to Pensacola, Florida and back to Ohio.A month later, back in Sandusky, Rogers still doesn't have his bags even after constant calls from Roger's roommate, Karin Lucas."A fiasco," said Lucas, describing when she calls Greyhound. "I get transferred constantly. Representatives pass the buck."Rogers and Lucas say when they reach out to Greyhound for help, they're surprised when a live person is on the other end of the line.Lucas says they could get 0 for each of the three lost bags through the Greyhound claim process. But the emergency plane ticket was nearly 0 itself. The original Greyhound ticket was about 0, including the extra money Rogers paid to get help loading and unloading the luggage and Rogers can't get that money back."For all the good it did, I still wound up losing everything," said Rogers.Roger's claim form identifies ,000 worth of medicine and personal items lost in the bags."Everything he owns was in those bags because he planned on relocating," said Lucas.Lucas says when she reaches out to Greyhound for help, she gets nowhere."For them to be as nonchalant about the situation is really really sad," said Lucas.The Cleveland Greyhound Station, where Rogers says his bags might arrive if they are ever found.Greyhound said they are still looking for the bags. Even once they are found, Alvin says he'll likely have to pick up his bags at the bus station in Cleveland or one of Ohio's other bigger cities. Rogers said he's been told Greyhound won't deliver bags to smaller pickup spots like Sandusky.Back in April, a bizarre Greyhound trip left Cleveland for New York City before turning around before a problem with the bus. Then, the city went all the way to Toledo because the driver missed the exit for Cleveland. Back then, riders said Greyhound was not very helpful finding a solution and did not offer refunds. 2963

As it celebrates it's birthday as America's anthem, let's revisit a few more notable renditions.Jose Feliciano — 1968 World SeriesFeliciano was among the first artists to deviate from the traditional playing of the anthem — and he did it in front of a nationwide audience. With the country already divided by the Vietnam War, Feliciano's rendition outraged many. Newspaper reports called Feliciano's performance "disgraceful," and some called him a "hippie."Despite the controversy at the time, Feliciano was invited back to Detroit to sing the anthem 44 years later before a Tigers playoff game, where he received unanimous applause.Jimi Hendrix — Woodstock (1969)Prior to Hendrix's performance at Woodstock, it was hard to imagine the national anthem being played on an electric guitar. Now, it's considered one of the most iconic renditions of the anthem ever performed.Roseanne Barr — San Diego, 1990Comedienne Roseanne Barr is not known for her singing voice, and it showed during her rendition of the anthem prior to a baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Cincinnati Reds. She screeched her way through the anthem, and capped it all off by spitting on the ground and grabbing at her crotch.Barr maintains her act was a joke, and told the Washington Post that she wasn't trying to respect the anthem or the flag with her performance. President George Bush disagreed.For her part, Barr maintains her version of the anthems was better than Fergie's.Whitney Houston — 1991 Super BowlWith the country newly entangled in a foreign war and security tensions high at the world's biggest sporting event, Houston delivered perhaps the most stirring and inspiring live performance of the anthem in the song's history. Even after her death, Houston's performance at the Super Bowl remains one of her most played songs.Jack Black — Los Angeles, 2011Black is most known for his slapstick comedy, so it must have been strange for fans of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks step to the mic for the anthem in 2011.However, Black is one half of the musical duo known as Tenacious D, and showed off his pipes in the 2003 comedy "School of Rock." Whether or not the Staples Center crowd was ready for it, Black went out and delivered a stirring rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner."Jesse McGuire — 2013 NFL PlayoffsThough the national anthem is played and sung live dozens of times each day, it's not often that an instrumental version of the anthem is played solo. SEATTLE, Wash. -- Starbucks is the latest company to say it will pause social media ads after a campaign led by civil rights organizations called for an ad boycott of Facebook, saying it doesn’t do enough to stop racist and violent content.Starbucks says its actions were not part of the “#StopHateforProfit” campaign, but that it is pausing its social ads while talking with civil rights organizations and its media partners about how to stop hate speech online.“We believe in bringing communities together, both in person and online, and we stand against hate speech,” the company said in a statement Sunday. “We believe more must be done to create welcoming and inclusive online communities, and we believe both business leaders and policy makers need to come together to affect real change.”The coffee chain joined a growing group of companies saying they'll pause ads on Facebook or social media more broadly, including Unilever, the European consumer-goods giant; Coca-Cola; Verizon and dozens of smaller companies. 1029

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - Several people in a San Marcos gated community have reported being targets of package thieves, according to one victim who spoke with 10News. The Sheriff's Department is looking at surveillance video, which appears to provide several leads.Mikayla Manos says a package was sent to her home on Almond Drive Friday.  Manos is a mentor for foster children. The package contained the personal items of one of those children, which she was asked to deliver to him.  When Manos arrived home, she did not see the package.Manos checked with her next-door neighbor, who has a surveillance camera. Video from Friday afternoon shows a girl walking past Manos' home. She turns and points toward Manos' porch and can be heard saying "get it".The video shows what appears to be a boy picking something up from Manos' porch, although the package cannot be clearly seen from the camera angle. At least two voices can be heard off camera. One is heard saying "I can't wait to wear these to school tomorrow." Manos says clothes are among the items stolen.Manos says she knows of at least three other neighbors who were victims.  10News spotted an empty Nordstrom bag ripped open on one neighbor's porch, while another neighbor tells 10News someone stole items from his garage when he briefly left it open around the same time.Several package boxes were found dumped nearby, including Manos'. Some of the foster child's items were recovered, but many remain missing. 1498
