ANDERSON, Indiana — An inmate on work release in an Indiana county is accused of stealing election equipment. The Madison County Clerk says no voting was compromised. Indiana State Police said Tyler Sink, 26, was on work release in Madison County and was authorized to work at the clerk's office. Investigators said an employee with the Madison County Justice Center told police they found a personal electronic ballot and a memory card hidden in Sink's personal belongings. State police say they believe Sink stole the equipment after he volunteered to set up a voting site while on work release. Madison County Clerk Darlene Likens says the compromised machines are not being used in early voting and that no voter information was stolen. "There is nothing, nothing was compromised," said Likens. "Nothing of our election was compromised, not the integrity of it but it's picked up something I don't think he had a clue what it was."Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings issued the following statement: 1041

An 11-year-old boy in Colorado is being called a hero after performing the Heimlich maneuver and possibly saving his younger brother from choking on his dinner.“So I got behind him went like this, pushed and pulled up about four times so the chicken could pop out and it did,” Elias Yatrakis told Denver7.Elias and his younger brother, Alex, were eating dinner on Monday night in their Greenwood Village home after a baseball game when the incident happened. The older boy says he knew what to do and jumped into action.“I was relieved. I was glad he was OK,” he said.“From my perspective, he saved his life,” mom Danielle Yatrakis said. “I’m just really glad he had the confidence and the knowledge to know what to do.”The 11-year-old had that knowledge because he had just recently learned what to do in a situation like this.“I am a Cub Scout so we had to take this CPR class in our basement and it taught CPR, the Heimlich,” he said. “I wasn’t really thinking. I knew what to do since I did that class.”Elias had earned his first aid badge as a part of the Cub Scouts just a few months earlier.“When he got the badge I’m like, 'that’s great to know,' but I mean I learned CPR before and I never used it. And so you’re kind of like they’re nice things to know and I now feel differently. That was really serious and important that he paid attention,” his mom said. The boys spent the evening after it happened with a lot of hugs and gratitude, according to their mom, but have since gone back to the same competitive young boys that they were before.KMGH's Jason Gruenauer first reported this story. 1609

An Arizona man was awarded a 5,000 verdict after a jury decided a dentist at a popular dental chain wrongly pulled all his teeth without consent.DeWayne Smith won his case against Western Dental Services and Dr. Steven Nguyen in January, ending a three-year legal battle.“They treated him like garbage,” said Craigg Voigtmann, one of Smith’s attorneys. “They took out all of his teeth and then abandoned him.”Western Dental disputes the allegations. In a statement, the California-based chain called the jury’s decision surprising and disappointing. On a Saturday in January 2015, Smith scheduled an emergency visit at the Western Dental. He was having severe tooth pain in his right upper wisdom tooth. It was his first visit ever at the dental office.“I really don’t like going to dentists but I was in pain,” Smith said.At the appointment, Western employees and Nguyen told him Smith had serious dental issues and that he would eventually need to replace all his teeth with implants or dentures.Smith understood, and under pressure from Western Dental sales staff agreed to a long-term treatment plan. However, Smith said he “made it very clear” that he only wanted to have one tooth pulled that day to relieve the pain.During the procedure, Western Dental staff numbed the area, sedated Smith with nitrous oxide, and then packed his mouth full of gauze, according to court testimony.Smith left not knowing they had extracted all his teeth.“I go to pulling this gauze out and then I realize there’s nothing there on the bottom, and there’s nothing there on the top,” he said. “I just fell to the floor. I didn’t believe what I was seeing.”Employees testified that Nguyen left immediately after the procedure and that no one appeared to tell Smith what they did. After the procedure, Western Dental also sent Smith a ,000 bill, he said.“(It’s) like running over a dog in the middle of the road and driving off,” said Smith’s fiancé, Sharon.Nguyen testified that he had a direct conversation with Smith, who told him he wanted to have all of his teeth extracted that day. Western Dental also produced consent forms with Smith’s signature. But Smith’s attorneys claimed those forms were manufactured after the procedure. And one Western employee testified against the company in hours of damning testimony.Bianca Esquer was a patient care coordinator at Western Dental from 2013 to 2015. She worked directly with Smith during his appointment. In a deposition and at trial, Esquer said that Smith made it clear he did not want a full extraction that day. She also discussed how employees and dentists are paid bonuses and commissions based on how much treatment patients get.Esquer also testified it’s hard to believe anyone would agree to have all their teeth pulled on their first visit and without detailed planning.“You don’t send someone home with a full extraction without teeth,” she said.Smith was not provided dentures from Western Dental until months after his procedure, he said.Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix reached out to Nguyen for comment through his attorney, Jeff Tonner. In an email, Tonner said Western Dental would be issuing the response.Western Dental’s full statement: 3206

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Students at the University of Michigan are being ordered to stay in place for two weeks after a surge of coronavirus cases driven by social gatherings on and off-campus.Local health officials said Tuesday that the surge is overwhelming their ability to confront the pandemic. Officials say coronavirus cases related to the university represent 61% of the total in Washtenaw County, compared to just 2% in August.More than 1,000 students have been infected since the start of the fall term despite limits on gatherings and classes that are mostly held online. Undergraduate students can attend in-person classes and also leave their residences for exercise, work, food, medical appointments, voting, and religious services. In response to the order, university President Mark Schlissel says even more undergraduate classes will shift to remote instruction. Students who want to leave campus housing for the balance of the term could receive a refund or credit. 990

An aspiring dancer from Alabama thought she would be ticketed — or worse — by a Birmingham police officer after he approached her about dancing in the middle of a street.Lala Diore, who has been dancing since she was 3, according to WBRC-TV in Birmingham, was filming an audition video to send to singer Janet Jackson while Officer Philip Jones was driving by.According to Diore's Facebook post, Jones told Diore that she shouldn't be in the middle of the street, but quickly changed his tune."So you are risking getting hurt for this," Jones asked, according to Diore's Facebook post. "...okay I’ll stop traffic for you and cut my lights on, show me what you got."Jones then blocked traffic with his cruiser, and turned up his headlights to help Diore get the shot. "This has actually showed the world and the community that police officers are not just out here to harass people or that we’re being mean and uptight," Jones told WBRC. "It shows we are human and we can have a little fun." 1023
