VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — The man accused of killing his girlfriend in Cardiff pleaded not guilty Wednesday at his arraignment.Henry Cowen, 41, stood stoically inside the defendant's box, watching Deputy District Attorney Marnie Layon accuse him of murdering 43-year-old Sabrina Lukosky. Friends at the courthouse said Lukosky was a beloved butterfly breeder, who was "so lovely."The investigation began when Lukosky's mother requested a welfare check in early October, after not hearing from her daughter for several days. Officers came to the gray flat the couple shared on Cowen's mother's property in Cardiff. They saw Lukosky's car but noticed a foul smell coming from the residence. A few days later, they executed a search warrant and found Lukosky's dead body and signs of a violent struggle inside the bedroom. "There was a broken stick, a bottle that had been broken, some amount of blood, and the victim had a 1.5-inch vertical gash to her forehead," Layon said. But that was not what killed her. The Medical Examiner said Lukosky died of strangulation and blunt force trauma. Prosecutors believe Cowen then left North County, first to got to Los Angeles. Then they said he took a Lyft to Riverside County, where he met with his children's mother. Investigators believe it was then that Cowen took steps to escape the country."That woman and her father, at his request, took him to the Israeli Consulate there, so that he could make arrangements to obtain a visa to get out of the country to move to Israel," Layon said. "They learned when they were going through the process, that would take six to eight months, and an expression was then made that the preference would be to go to New York."But before he could leave, officers with the Fugitive Task Force arrested Cowen in Riverside County on Oct. 11. He remains in custody with no bail.Cowen has an extensive violent criminal record, including assaulting an ex-girlfriend in California and kidnapping and torturing a man in Washington State. Because of that, if convicted, Cowen faces a maximum sentence of 55 years to life in prison. 2106

(KGTV) -- Deputies arrested a man they say kidnapped his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son early Wednesday morning.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the alleged kidnapping happened on the 300 block of Hillside Terrace at 2:15 a.m.Authorities say Guillermo Cruz, 32, was intoxicated when he drove to his girlfriend’s house, jumped a balcony fence, and abducted the woman’s sleeping 8-year-old son. Deputies say Cruz is not the child’s father.After calling 911, deputies spotted the vehicle Cruz was driving and pulled him over before making the arrest. The young boy was unharmed.Deputies say they noticed Cruz had an empty vodka bottle in the car with him. He was arrested on multiple charges, including child abduction, kidnapping, child endangerment, driving under the influence and burglary. 832

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is ordering the removal from the Capitol of portraits honoring four previous House speakers who served in the Confederacy.In a letter Thursday to the House clerk, Pelosi directed the immediate removal of portraits depicting these former speakers: Robert Hunter of Virginia, James Orr of South Carolina, and Howell Cobb and Charles Crisp, both of Georgia.Pelosi says the House was unaware of the portraits until an inventory was taken of the chamber’s statues.“We didn't know about this until we were taking inventory of the statues,” she said. “And the curator told us that there were four paintings of speakers in that and the Capitol of the United States four speakers who had served in the Confederacy.”Pelosi says that "there is no room in the hallowed halls of Congress or in any place of honor for memorializing men who embody the violent bigotry and grotesque racism of the Confederacy.″Pelosi says the portraits will be taken down in observance of Juneteenth, a June 19 holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. 1094

WASHINGTON (AP) — Navy officials said Wednesday they are pulling achievement medals from prosecutors who argued the case against a decorated Navy SEAL who was acquitted in the death of a wounded Islamic State captive after President Donald Trump intervened.Trump tweeted earlier Wednesday that he had directed the secretary of the Navy and the chief of naval operations to "immediately withdraw and rescind" the Navy Achievement Medal from prosecutors who argued the case against Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher, who was acquitted by military jurors earlier this month."The Prosecutors who lost the case against SEAL Eddie Gallagher (who I released from solitary confinement so he could fight his case properly), were ridiculously given a Navy Achievement Medal," Trump complained, adding, "I am very happy for Eddie Gallagher and his family!"Navy spokesman Cdr. VISTA (KGTV) – One person is dead and four more injured after three motorcycles crashed in Vista Saturday night.The crash happened at the intersection of Monte Mar Road and East Vista Way around 6:30 p.m. The motorcyclist who died is 55, but authorities did not release his name.Deputies say at least three motorcycles and one car were involved in the crash. All of the motorcyclists are part of the same club.Deputies say three Harley’s crashed with a Toyota Camry. Authorities don’t believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 544
