(KGTV) -- The avocado boom in Mexico has pulled parts of the country out of poverty in just 10 years, but the prosperity there turns deadly as money-hungry cartels take hold of the market. While there's brutality below the border, there's a history in the homegrown in San Diego. "San Diego is the biggest producer of avocados in the state of California," said farmer Noel Stehly. 10News took a trip to Stehly Farms in North County where you'll find more than 250 acres of the flourishing fruit. The land has been in Stehly's farm for decades. "Those that buy California, great, but if you want it in November, you want a Haas avocado, its not going to come from California," said Stehly. They're competing with American growers in production and now threatening their workers. "I have a lot of my employees that work here right now in Michoacan," said Stehly. Just really be careful".Michocan is the heart of the violence, where gangs robbed USDA food inspectors at gunpoint in August. "You hear the stories of what goes on down there," said Stehly. "They live in these pueblos that are in the growing regions that are dangerous. They’re absolutely dangerous."The cartels are at war with themselves while threatening growers and police departments with kidnapping, extortion, and murder. "I just worry about them they’re part of my family." said Stehly. "Most of them were at my wedding and have been here long enough to know every one of my kids. Stehly said the water that feeds his farm is not what it used to be. The water now comes from the Colorado River instead of Northern California. Our water system in the state of California is broken and nobody's gonna fix it."The composition of the water has also changed with high levels of salt killing off his crop. The water issue is causing production on the farm to go down. "I do sell a lot less, I grow a lot less," said Stehly. "It's sad. It’s sad to have drying trees on your property."For this second-generation farmer, it's personal. "This property is special. It’s a labor of love now. It paid a lot of bills," said Stehly. "It's an important part of us. U.S. energy consumption plummeted to its lowest level in more than 30 years this spring as the nation’s economy largely shut down because of the coronavirus, federal officials reported Wednesday.The drop was driven by less demand for coal that is burned for electricity and oil that’s refined into gasoline and jet fuel, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said.The declines were in line with lower energy usage around the globe as the pandemic seized up economies.Those trends are turning around as commercial activity resumes but the impact has already been profound — including energy companies filing for bankruptcy protection and a forecasted dip in annual U.S. and global greenhouse gas emissions.Overall U.S. energy consumption dropped 14 % during April compared to a year earlier, the energy administration said. That’s the lowest monthly level since 1989 and the largest decrease ever recorded in data that’s been collected since 1973.The largest drop previously seen was in December 2001, after the Sept. 11 attacks shocked the economy and a mild winter depressed electricity demand.Natural gas bucked the trend with a 15 percent increase in use during the April lockdown. More people at home meant more demand for natural gas as a heating fuel, while relatively few homes are heated with coal or oil, said Brett Marohl, who helped produce the energy administration findings.Petroleum consumption fell to 14.7 million barrels a day in April, down almost a third compared to the same period in 2019. Demand already has rebounded some after stay-at-home orders expired and large sectors of the economy started moving again.Led by people resuming some of their old driving habits, particularly in cities, petroleum consumption in June was back up to 17.6 million barrels a day, according to the American Petroleum Institute. Two businesses decided to close their doors for a day in reaction to white supremacist Richard Spencer’s speech at Michigan State University. The Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan said it got a call from Attorney Kyle Bristow. He wanted to book a meeting on Sunday at the club for about 100 people.  “It was a law firm having a meet and greet. I didn’t think anything negative about it,” said Carsten Grotioh of the Carpathian Club.  “Then Sterling Heights Police came in and asked to speak to management.  They told me they heard there was going to be a Neo-Nazi gathering here on Sunday.”Grotioh learned that Bristow had represented Spencer as a lawyer, and the meeting was supposed to include Spencer’s supporters. He didn’t just cancel the reservation. He closed his business for the day. The owner of the Tipsy McStagger Pub in Warren said he had a similar experience. He got a call from Bristow’s Foundation for the Market Place of Ideas. He was told the organization wanted to host a networking meeting on Monday. When someone came into his business and informed him the networking involved people who supported a white nationalist, he says he was disgusted. “I said absolutely not are they coming to our bar. I mean, we are a neighborhood bar. I have been in this community 50 years. I retired from the Warren Police Department. I have seen enough hate. Our bar is what it is. It is a neighborhood bar. Everyone is welcome,” said John Vostoris, the owner of Tipsy McStagger Pub. Vostoris also decided to close his business to avoid any gathering there by people who planned to attend the event. The Anti Defamation League says standing up to hate, while not infringing on free speech is exactly what everyone needs to do.“It is not something we want to see in our state,” said Heidi Budaj, the ADL’s Michigan Regional Director. She says the fear is hate speech leads to action.  Nationwide there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2016 to 2017. In Michigan, there was a 13% increase overall. “We want our state to be known as a welcoming place that embraces diversity. Under Armour announced on Thursday about 150 million accounts on the popular health app MyFitnessPal were hacked.The company said it learned four days ago that an unauthorized party accessed MyFitnessPal user data in February and it has begun notifying affected users of the security breach."Under Armour is working with leading data security firms to assist in its investigation, and also coordinating with law enforcement authorities," the firm said in a press release. "The company will be requiring MyFitnessPal users to change their passwords and is urging users to do so immediately."The affected data includes usernames, email addresses and hashed passwords. The company doesn't collect Social Security numbers or driver's license information, and payment card data wasn't affected because the company said it's collected and stored separately.MyFitnessPal is a mobile app used to track meals and exercise.
