SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who mailed out her state tax payment at a post office in Mira Mesa got a big shock a few days later. A week ago, Barbara Reynolds wrote out a 9 check for her state taxes. She drove to her post office on Mira Mesa Boulevard and dropped it off around noon."I thought it was safer to come here," said Reynolds.Days later, she got a call. A bank teller in San Juan Capistrano was looking at her check, but it looked a lot of different. The amount had been hiked a bit to 9. Instead of the state, the new payee was the name 'Marco Antonio Lopez Ramirez."The teller shredded the check, suspicious because a man hoping to deposit the check had presented a dubious driver's license and an odd-looking check. As in other stolen check cases, the thief likely used a chemical solution to dissolve away the ink and 'wash' the check, before filling in the blanks."Very disappointed. It wasn't a good feeling at all," said Reynolds.The feeling was made worse because of how that check was stolen. One possible cause is 'fishing,' where thieves use a simple string - connected to something like a rodent glue trap - to fish mail out of a collection boxIn this case, Reynolds says the stolen check included her social security number."I'm very worried about identity theft. I won't be using the mail for future important documents or payments," said Reynolds.Reynolds filed a report with police and the Postal Inspection Office. A Postal Inspection spokesperson says they haven't seen a surge in mail thefts at that location. 1553

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A teen suffered serious injuries after a firework he was holding exploded early Thursday morning.ABC 10News learned the incident happened at around 2 a.m. in the 5500 block of Montezuma Road, near San Diego State University.The 18-year-old male was apparently holding an M80 when it suddenly went off. The teen reportedly lost most of his fingers and suffered an injury to his foot.The teen was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment. Details on his injuries were not immediately released.No other injuries were reported in the incident. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After moving to San Diego almost three years ago, Derek and Terri Ruff are on a mission to experience everything the city has to offer. “Yes we are, it’s fantastic! We hardly leave the county, there’s just so much to do," said Derek.The couple moved here from New Mexico, and for nine years Derek's colon cancer seemed to be behind them. “I won’t say cancer-free, but I didn’t have any symptoms for years, until last May, whenever I came in for a checkup, and they discovered cancer again," said Derek.It was stage IV metastatic colon cancer.“It’s a lot. It’s a tough diagnosis, it’s really difficult to live through.”After three months of aggressive chemotherapy, Ruff's condition only got worse. His journey brought him to UC San Diego Health's Moores Cancer for a clinical trial, which unfortunately did not work. But he Ruff became a candidate for another trial involving natural killer cells created from stem cells.“These are patients who don’t have a lot of good options in terms of chemotherapy or immunotherapy," said Dr. Sandip Patel, a medical oncologist who is leading the trial at UCSD. Decades of research on natural killer cells have culminated in the new cancer treatment being developed by San Diego-based Fate Therapeutics.Fate is the first to mass produce cancer-killing cells from a type of stem cell called a human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC). "The concept of utilizing the stem cells that are within us, within our blood factory, within our blood marrow, to create a master bank of cells that we can utilize to program in different ways to fight cancer with cellular immunotherapy."The off-the-shelf, iPSC-derived natural killer cell cancer immunotherapy received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to move into clinical trials in November 2018. Ruff is the first person in the world to receive the treatment and got his first dose in February.“Being the first is exciting but it was less so hearing that you have stage iv cancer and you don’t have much of a future, and now I feel hopeful, again," said Ruff.While it's too early to tell if the treatment is working, researchers are hopeful this treatment will one day help many cancer patients. 2212

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is taking legal action against a trendy hair product company, claiming it caused her severe hair loss and bald spots. She’s not alone. Women around the country are claiming similar effects. They blame their hair care nightmares on Monat Global, based in Florida.“It’s been so hard,” says San Diego’s Dana Sohovich. She held back tears as she spoke exclusively with 10News about her experience. Sohovich has filed a class action lawsuit against the company, alleging it falsely promised her “longer, fuller, stronger” hair. Her suit accuses Monat of “false and deceptive advertising”.“I literally had almost a baseball size [ball] of hair in my hand,” she tells us, adding, “It's devastating.”PHOTOS: Monat users report hair and scalp damageTemecula’s Ashley Slayden showed us her daughter’s scalp. “You can see the bald spots [on] her head. You can see how thin it is. It was never that thin,” she adds. Slayden tells us she and her kids starting using the product in the fall. “I bought it at wholesale and I spent seventy dollars,” she adds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An off-ramp drivers have used for decades to exit the northbound state Route 163 onto Friars Road is gone for good.On Wednesday, Caltrans permanently closed the off-ramp that leads from northbound SR-163 to eastbound Friars Road. The exit provides direct access onto eastbound Friars Road, with a straight shot to SDCCU stadium and the thousands of homes being built that direction. It also gets drivers away from the traffic heading toward the Fashion Valley Mall. 493
