STATEN ISLAND — A Staten Island City Councilmember is leading the push for the borough to secede.Joe Borelli (R), who represents the 51st District and lives on Staten Island, will be introducing two proposals to form a committee and to begin a study to look at secession.Staten Islanders have long felt like they are the “forgotten borough.”Of the 51 member city council, Staten Island only has three, Borelli one of the three. Residents said they have mixed feelings about the matter.“It’s been a staple of the five boroughs,” said Tariq Harmon, a 27-year-resident of Staten Island “It has to be five boroughs other than that it wouldn’t be New York City, you losing everything.”“It’s kind of tough, we’re always fending for our own I feel like we’re always the last borough to get support,” said Annette Lyudin.Lyudin and her husband, Alex, are raising a family on the Island, where they’ve lived for the past four years, after moving from Brooklyn.“It’s quiet, safe, great schools, great restaurants, it’s a relaxing place to live,” said Alex Lyudin.Of course as any New Yorker knows, this is not the first time there has been talk of secession. The last time it gained traction was 30 years ago in 1989.In a 1990 referendum, more than 80 percent of Staten Islanders voted to begin the secession process.Then on Election Day in November 1993, 65% of Staten Islanders voted by ballot in favor of becoming an independent city.But a vote never made it to the state level, many blaming then New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for refusing to put it to a vote at the state level.As it did back then, questions now arise such as Will the borough survive financially on its own? Will taxes go up to pay for resources?Even..,will the Staten Island ferry no longer be free?While Staten Island may often seem like a land of its own - afterall it’s the only borough that overwhelmingly voted for President Trump - only time will tell if we have our own version of Brexit. 1987

Space is an incredible subject to study, and it wouldn’t be possible without the collection of Moon rocks and dust, as well as information about the Universe scientists have gathered.In building 31 north at the Johnson Space Center, NASA’s Lunar Lab houses some of the most famous rocks from all the Apollo missions. They have over 100,000 rocks from space.Charis Krysher, a Lunar Curation Processor for NASA, says moon rocks and space dust are the most important thing brought back to Earth.“One of the first things that we learned from the Apollo collection was how old the moon the Earth was,” Krysher says.Rocks on Earth aren’t pristine like they are on the Moon. Moon rocks don’t age, because there is no atmosphere in space to break down the rocks. The rocks found on the moon can potentially be billions of years old. “More recently we've actually learned in the past, less than a decade, that the Moon's rocks actually contain way more water than was originally realized,” the processor explains. Just like famous diamonds and jewels, there are well known space rocks, too. Like the one found by Apollo 15. “They named it the Genesis Rock, because it’s a part of the primordial crust of the moon,” she says.When studying these samples, scientists take all the precautions, from wearing bunny suits, temperature-controlled rooms and even triple bagging each rock for storing."We try really hard to preserve the rocks so that the science that we learn from the rocks can be trusted," Krysher says.It’s not every day we go to the Moon, so these scientists take time to study the rocks and do it sparingly. They are still breaking rocks over 40 years old. However, come five years from now, they’ll get another chance for more rocks when U.S. astronauts head to the moon in 2024. 1796

PETERSBURG, Florida — A McDonald's employee who was battered by a customer at work has hired an attorney and says she has been placed on leave following the incident.On New Year's Eve, a video of the employee, Yasmine James, 20, being battered by a male customer at her place employment in St. Petersburg went viral. On Wednesday, James retained local attorney Michele Rayner-Goolsby after she says she was placed on leave. James says that although she was not physically hurt, she was emotionally hurt when she was left to defend herself.Attorney Rayner-Goolsby released the following statement:On New Year’s Eve at the McDonald’s located on 34th Street South in St. Petersburg, Ms. James was physically attacked by Daniel Taylor, a customer who became enraged after being told of the restaurant’s ‘no straw in the lobby’ policy, simply meaning straws are only offered to customers upon request. Taylor, refusing to believe Ms. James, proceeded to berate her, hurling vulgar and discriminatory names at her, while threatening physical violence in front of her colleagues and other customers. Ms. James’ attempts to de-escalate the situation were met by more violence, as Taylor forcefully grabbed her by the collar, dragging her over the top of the counter. Ms. James was left to defend herself, as no one immediately stepped in to help. While Taylor was arrested, the McDonald’s corporation has yet to release a statement about the incident and has placed Ms. James on leave. This case is a clear example of how white privilege and male privilege too often leave Black women alone to defend themselves in the face of harm. I’m grateful that Ms. James has entrusted me with her case; she’s not alone in the fight anymore.James spoke about the incident for the first time Thursday since it happened. She says she's not an aggressive person and hopes people don't think differently of her. She says she needed to defend herself."I didn’t have any control over my body when he grabbed me," she said. "Like I’m scared, like why are you grabbing me, I just didn’t understand his intentions. Even though we were having a verbal conversation, I don’t think it was that for him to grab me.”She says right after the attack she had to call 911 because she says management didn't know what to do. She doesn't blame her manager and says hes a good person but says there isn't enough company training on how to deal with situations like this."When that happened, it was like he didn’t know what to do. It's like, basically what's the procedure? There’s none," she said.It’s why she’s now working closely with her new attorneys to hold McDonald's accountable. James hasn’t been fired and says McDonald's has welcomed her back, but she doesn’t feel safe."It’s like scary, anybody can do something to me. I work so close with the customers, and now that everyone knows and people don’t agree with this they can do anything," she said. "I am committed to using this horrible experience as means to fight for justice, not only for myself, but for other women experiencing this kind of violence in environments where they should be safe and protected.”“I am so grateful for the outpouring of support I have received from all around the country. I am aware this type of violence happens to women, especially Black women, everyday," James added.St. Pete police arrested Daniel Taylor, 41, and charged him with two counts of battery.A McDonald's spokesperson released this statement to ABC Action News on Thursday:We share the community's concern, and are taking this disturbing incident very seriously. Our highest priority is always the safety and well-being of everyone in the restaurant, and we do not condone violence of any kind, especially against our employees.
