KHARTOUM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese official said Saturday that the China-Arab Cooperation Forum constitutes an important platform to upgrade the economic, commercial and social ties between China and the Arab world."The China-Arab Cooperation Forum is important as it constitutes one of the major mechanisms to enhance and strengthen the economic and commercial relations between the Arab states and China," Abdul-Baqui Jailani, Sudanese state minister for humanitarian affairs, told Xinhua, one week before a ministerial conference of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum scheduled for May 13, in Tianjin, China.Jailani regarded the Sino-Sudanese cooperation as a model for the Arab countries to follow suit, saying that "Chinese experience in Sudan deserves to be studied thoroughly and it deserves to be repeated elsewhere in any other African or Arab country"."I think if we take for example oil industry, exploration and production services, the Chinese have proved to be at the highest level of development in this industry in particular, and I think we can develop this in other similar countries where there are reserves of petroleum," he added.He went on to say that "China is working with full transparency; they can build confidence with others without any hindrances or obstacles."The Sudanese official further called upon the Arab and African countries as well to give the Chinese a chance to invest and cooperate, adding that "such cooperation will result in mutual benefit for both China and others nations."He affirmed that China's contribution to establishment of development projects in Sudan would help in achieving lasting stability and peace in the country, saying that "for example, if we concentrate on development, on infrastructure, we will come to peace in Darfur. China is providing good services in this respect. ""The same thing could be said about the south. We need to concentrate on developing the south and China stands with us in this respect. It is a fruitful cooperation with great benefits," he said.Jailani, meanwhile, commended the strong ties between Khartoum and Beijing, saying that "this relation is deeply-rooted in history and I think what has been achieved now between the two countries is paving the way for a lasting peace in Sudan."The fourth Ministerial Meeting of China-Arab Cooperation Forum will be held on May 13-14 in Tianjin, China. The meeting, with the theme of deepening comprehensive cooperation and realizing common development, would give impetus to the China-Arab friendship.The China-Arab Cooperation Forum was established in 2004.

DRESDEN, Germany, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met with Stanislaw Tillich, premier of the eastern German state of Saxony here on Monday.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, arrived here earlier in the day for an official goodwill visit.Cooperation between localities constitutes an important part of Sino-German ties, Li said. BEIJING, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese legislators Monday started discussing for the second time a draft law on the protection of oil and natural gas pipelines which spells out the responsibilities of pipeline companies.According to the draft, companies must take safety measures while constructing pipelines and ensure the quality of materials.Companies must have professional personnel regularly patrol pipelines and deal with any potential safety issues in a timely manner, the draft said.They must place warning signs near pipelines according to state standards and replace damaged signs as soon as possible.The draft law says pipeline companies must offer compensation to land owners whose land use is curtailed by the pipeline.Buildings and facilities like pools and greenhouses that may damage pipelines are prohibited in the buffer areaThe draft said rapid urbanization has resulted in the reckless construction of buildings and roads within pipeline buffer areas, making pipeline protection increasingly difficult.The State Council, China's cabinet, submitted the law to the 14th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature. The Standing Committee's four-day meeting began Monday.

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said Saturday it would assemble more than 1,100 engineers and workers from across the country to dig over 1,600 wells in the country's southwest, where a severe drought is likely to continue.All of those professionals would be arriving at the droughty areas by April 1 and the first batch set off on Saturday, said the MLR in a statement on its website.More than 1,600 wells would be drilled, providing 200,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day for 2 million people and 1 million head of livestock, said the ministry, hoping to finish digging 1,400 of the wells by May 10.So far, the MLR has already dug over 100 wells, which can produce drinking water for more than 100,000 people.The drought, which has left southwest China suffering since last Autumn, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological agencies.It has left 18 million residents and 11.7 million heads of livestock in the region with drinking water shortages and caused direct economic losses of 23.7 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars), data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- As of 8:00 a.m. Monday local time, there had been 1,206 aftershocks following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Yushu, according to statistics from the China Earthquake Administration.Among the aftershocks, 12 were above 3 magnitude, one between 6.0 and 6.9 magnitude, three between 4.0 and 4.9 magnitude and eight between 3.0 and 3.9 magnitude.There has been no more aftershocks above 3 magnitude since a 3.6 tremor occurred at 7:00 a.m. April 17.The 7.1 magnitude quake, which jolted the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on April 14, had left at least 1,706 dead, 256 missing and 12,128 injured, as of 10 a.m. Sunday.
