San Diego (KGTV)- The San Diego Police Department will soon be adding 63 new officers on our streets. The department held the orientation for its 120th police academy this morning. This academy class is the largest class in over 25 years.“It’s very exciting,” says recruit Samantha Koegel. “I’m really excited to start this new journey of my life.”Koegel says her interest in the police force started began as a senior in high school after participating in a ride-along with an SDPD officer. Koegel graduated from Ramona High School. She received her degree from The University of Nevada- Reno, in Criminal Justice. All recruits went through an extensive screening process before being invited to the academy. “This is probably within 5 to 7 percent of all the applicants that we’ve gotten,” says Lt. Steve Waldheim. In the past, the San Diego Police Department has been understaffed. They currently have 1,800 officers but are budgeted for over 2,000. Lt. Waldheim says they the department needs more officers on the streets.“We need more officers in patrol so that they are out answering radio calls that can lower our response times.”The average salary for a San Diego Police recruit is ,000. After they become an officer, that number jumps to around ,000. “The salary now with SDPD, at the end of these pay raises that city council approved, we will be on par with the rest of the agencies around San Diego County,” says Lt. SAN DIEGO( KGTV) - A Navy veteran has earned a spot with Federal Fire San Diego, getting hired the day she graduated from the fire academy.More competitive, Federal Fire is the civilian department which oversees San Diego naval bases.After serving her country, rookie Caitlyn Argeris says she wanted to serve her community.“She was hungry for it, we saw the fire get lit, and we wanted to nurture that," said Chief Mary Anderson.While still on active duty, the young mother took EMT classes at night“I wasn’t sure if I’d be strong enough, fast enough, have the mental aptitude or physical capabilities," said Argeris. "But you push through it and keep going."Chief Anderson says Argeris is the second Navy veteran they've hired on the spot after graduation.Anderson is on a mission to recruit more women into her department. They're at 2 percent, compared to the national average of about 5 percent.“Women bring something unique to the fire service: compassion," said Chief Anderson. "Once they realize they can do it, they catch that bug as well.”Argeris hopes her story will inspire other women to consider joining the fire service. 1142

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After successive years of devastating wildfires, California's fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase logging and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That's double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, CalFire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said.The agency is also seeking National Guard assistance to coordinate the work. California also experienced devastating wildfires in 2017, including a blaze that killed 22 people and destroyed more than 5,500 structures around the wine country city of Santa Rosa.Republican President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized California's Democratic officials for not doing a good enough job managing its forests and has threatened to cut off California's federal disaster funding.RELATED: Southern California wildfire burn zones on alert during stormThe 35 projects are based on input from local Calfire units and would reduce wildfire risk to more than 200 communities, according to Calfire. They include removing dead trees, clearing vegetation, and creating fuel breaks, defensible spaces and ingress and egress corridors.The projects prioritize communities at high risk from wildfires but also with significant numbers of vulnerable groups such as the elderly or poor. They include work around the city of Redding, which was also devastated by wildfire last year, and in Butte County, where Paradise is located.An estimated 15 million acres of forest land in California are in need of thinning or other restoration work, so the 35 projects are just a start, Calfire officials said. SAN DIEGO -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop strip club welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They said the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community.
