A global research team of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, using spectroscopes, have found hydrogen sulfide in the clouds or Uranus, NASA said on Tuesday. What is special about hydrogen sulfide is it is a common chemical on Earth humans like to avoid. Hydrogen sulfide is the same gas that rotten eggs emit. Yes, Uranus smells like rotten eggs. The presence of hydrogen sulfide has long been suspected on Uranus. NASA’s Voyager 2, which passed by the planet decades ago, detected the gas. But using Earth-based satellites, NASA has been able to confirm the presence of the gas. NASA said that finding hydrogen sulfide on Uranus is a striking difference compared to the other gas planets. Jupiter and Saturn have had ammonia detected in the clouds, but not hydrogen sulfide. “We’ve strongly suspected that hydrogen sulfide gas was influencing the millimeter and radio spectrum of Uranus for some time, but we were unable to attribute the absorption needed to identify it positively. Now, that part of the puzzle is falling into place as well,” Glenn Orton of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said. If there is one bit of good news, scientists said: It would be impossible for the hydrogen sulfide to overtake humans. "Suffocation and exposure in the negative 200 degrees Celsius [392 degrees Fahrenheit] atmosphere made of mostly hydrogen, helium and methane would take its toll long before the smell," said lead author Patrick Irwin of the University of Oxford, U.K.    1582

A day after the school shooting in Florida, a central Florida teacher posted her thoughts on why she thinks the violence is occurring in America.FULL COVERAGE: Parkland school shootingTeacher Kelly Guthrie Raley of Eustis, Florida, located just north of Orlando, said children "don’t understand the permanency of death anymore."Raley's post had been shared more than 690,000 times by Monday morning. She goes on to say that the mental health, lack of moral values, violent video games and "horrendous lack of parental support" is all contributing to the shootings.   Raley said parents need to “STEP UP!” and be the annoying mom that pries and knows what their child is doing.  She concluded the post by asking, "When are we going to take our own responsibility seriously?"Read the full post below:  852

A growing list of companies in the United States have recently announced that they’ll start recognizing June 19, or Juneteenth, as a permanent company-wide holiday in support of racial diversity.Juneteenth is a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War was over, and that all remaining slaves in the state were free. That was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, which declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free,” according to the National Archives.Target is among the latest to make Juneteenth a company holiday. The chain made the announcement Monday, saying it wanted to give its employees the space to honor the holiday in their own way. All stores and distribution centers will remain open and hourly team members who work on June 19 will be paid time and a half, like with other holidays. “We recognize that the racial trauma the country is experiencing now is not new, but throughout recent weeks there has been a sense that this time is, and has to be, different,” said Brian Cornell, chairman and CEO at Target. “Juneteenth takes on additional significance in this moment. Moving now to recognize it on an annual basis—as a day to celebrate, further educate ourselves or connect with our communities—is one more important action Target can take as a company to help the country live up to the ideal of moving forward in a new way.” The NFL is also making the move. The league’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, made the announcement Friday in an internal memo obtained by ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Shefter.“This year, as we work together as a family and in our communities to combat the racial injustices that remain deeply rooted in to the fabric of our society, the NFL will observe Juneteenth on Friday, June 19th as a recognized holiday and our league offices will be closed,” Goodell wrote. “It is a day to reflect on our past, but most importantly, consider how each one of us can continue to show up and band together to work toward a better future.” 2202

A detailed look at COVID-19 deaths in U.S. kids and young adults released Tuesday shows they mirror patterns seen in older patients. The report examined 121 deaths of those younger than 21, as of the end of July. Like older adults, many of them had one or more medical condition — like lung problems, including asthma, obesity, heart problems or developmental conditions.Deaths were also more common among those in certain racial and ethnic groups, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC found 54 were Hispanic, 35 were Black, and 17 were white, even though overall there are far more white Americans than Black and Hispanic.“It’s really pretty striking. It’s similar to what we see in adults,” and may reflect many things, including that many essential workers who have to go to work are Black and Hispanic parents, said Dr. Andrew Pavia, a pediatric infectious diseases expert at the University of Utah. He was not involved in the CDC study. The numbers of young deaths are small though. They represent about 0.08% of the total U.S. deaths reported to CDC at the time, though children and college-age adults make up 26% of the U.S. population.Fifteen of the deaths were tied to a rare condition called multisystem inflammatory syndrome, which can cause swelling and heart problems. The report also found nearly two-thirds of the deaths were in males, and that deaths increased with age. There were 71 deaths among those under 17, including a dozen infants. The remaining 50 deaths were ages 18 to 20.Scientists are still trying to understand why severe illnesses seem to become more common as children age. One theory is that young children have fewer sites on their airway surfaces that the coronavirus is able to attach to, Pavia said. Another is that children may be less prone to a dangerous overreaction by the immune system to the coronavirus, he added. Thus far this year, the COVID-19 toll in children is lower than the pediatric flu deaths reported to the CDC during a routine flu season, which has been about 130 in recent years. But comparing the two is difficult for a number of reasons, including that most schools weren’t open during the spring because of the pandemic.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education.
