SINGAPORE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Tuesday that China will become even more important globally and Singapore must find opportunities to ride on China's growth.Speaking at the Business China spring reception on Tuesday night, Goh said that China has over the past year weathered the global economic downturn with exceptional resilience.Despite shrinking external demand and rising unemployment, China's timely and bold policy responses have enabled its economy to grow at a sizzling 8.7 percent last year, he said, adding that China is now reinforcing its role as the engine for growth in Asia, if not the world.Goh said that the city state recognized China's potential early, soon after China began to open up its economy in 1978.Because of the early efforts made by the Singapore government and Singaporeans, China is today the city state's third largest trading partner and top investment destination, Goh said.As for riding on China's growth, Goh said that the Singapore government will help its companies gain an even stronger foothold in China, and continue to catalyze business opportunities in China.The seven provincial-level business councils, as well as other high-level dialogues and platforms, help open opportunities for companies, reinforce the Singapore brand name and increase its mindshare in China, Goh said.

NANJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua)-- China and Japan have the opportunity to further develop their relationship through cooperation in a wide range of areas, an advisory panel on China-Japan relations said here Tuesday."Bilateral ties have an opportunity to develop as the two governments attach great importance to bilateral ties and are committed to long-term, stable, friendly, and cooperative relations," the fifth 21st Century Committee for China-Japan Friendship said after their first meeting.The committee, an advisory panel to both nations' governments, convened a three-day meeting in China beginning Sunday to discuss various aspects of China-Japan relations and to provide suggestions to the two governments."Members have discussed bilateral cooperation from a strategic point of view and have reached a fruitful outcome," the Chinese chair of the panel, Tang Jiaxuan, said.The committee agreed China and Japan should aim for cooperation in the post-financial crisis world and step up partnership in environmental protection and low-carbon business. WASHINGTON, March 24 (Xinhua) -- China and U.S. economic and trade frictions should be handled appropriately to advance the healthy and steady development of the bilateral economic and trade ties, a senior Chinese trade official said on Wednesday."For the moment, the biggest challenge facing the China-U.S. economic and trade relationship is trade protectionism and the politicizing of our economic and trade issues," Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Zhong Shan told reporters at Embassy of China in Washington. "We hope that China and the U.S. can treat each other as partners instead of rivals."Zhong said China is against the tendency to politicize bilateral economic and trade issues.Under the pressure of the election year and high unemployment rate, some U.S. senators last week proposed a legislation to press China to appreciate its currency.The bill requires the U.S. Treasury Department to identify countries with "fundamentally misaligned currencies" and asks the Commerce Department to investigate currency undervaluation as a " countervailable subsidy."Meanwhile, 130 U.S. congressmen wrote to the government, demanding the Obama administration take actions to appreciate the RMB against the dollar."The RMB exchange rate is not the root cause for U.S. trade deficit with China or key to U.S. unemployment," Zhong said.He said that the economic structures of the two countries are highly complementary. To force an appreciation in the RMB cannot resolve U.S. deficit or unemployment.Zhong noted that given the large scale, broad scope and rapid development of the China-U.S. bilateral economic and trade cooperation, frictions and problems are inevitable."As long as the two sides stick to a strategic and long-term approach to our economic and trade ties and appropriately handle trade frictions through communication and consultation, we can find common grounds and shelf differences and constantly further the bilateral economic and trade relations."
