BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua)-- China has allocated 23 billion yuan (3.37billion U.S. dollars) for energy saving, anti-pollution, ecological and environmental protection projects since the fourth quarter of last year, a senior official told Xinhua Wednesday.     Han Yongwen, secretary-general of the National Development and Reform Commission, said investment in these sectors accounted for 10 percent of the 230 billion yuan government spending to date on infrastructure, ecological and environmental sectors, quake relief and other areas.     China unveiled a 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package in November last year to be spent over the next two years with 1.18 trillion yuan spending from the central government, to cope with the adverse effects of the global financial crisis and shore up the domestic economy.     "This ratio of 10 percent was not low. It shows that the central government not only focuses on stimulating domestic demand and keeping stable economic growth, but also stresses laying a good foundation for the economy's sustainable development in the long run," Han said.     Of the 23 billion yuan spending, 13 billion went to improving urban water treatment facilities, 4 billion yuan to pollution prevention projects on the Huaihe and other big rivers, 3.5 billion yuan to forest planting projects and the other 2.5 billion yuan to key energy saving projects across the country.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has allocated more than 126 million yuan (about 18.4 U.S. dollars) for disaster relief in six worst rainstorm-hit provinces, autonomous regions or municipalities in south China, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Sunday.     The six provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities include Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou and Chongqing.     A total of 5,200 tents were also sent to Guangxi, Jiangxi and Hunan to provide shelter for the people displaced there, the ministry said.     While Beijing and neighboring provinces are fighting heat waves, the southern half of the country has been drenched in rain or flood since late June.     The latest round of rainstorms and flood, also this year's worst according to the ministry, had battered 12 provinces, killing 75 people and leaving another 13 missing and 938,000 homeless as of 4 p.m. Sunday.     Close to 40 million people were affected by the rainstorms and the flood, it said, adding that a total of 101,000 houses were toppled in the flood, causing over 13 billion yuan (about 1.9 billion U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses, it said.

FLORENCE, Italy, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China highly values its relations with Italy and is willing to broaden consensus and deepen pragmatic cooperation with the country in various fields. Bilateral relations have developed smoothly since China and Italy established diplomatic relations 39 years ago, Hu said at a meeting with senior Italian officials, including Culture Minister Sandro Bondi and Toscana Region's President Claudio Martini.     He added that the two countries have further deepened their cooperation in politics, economy, culture and other fields especially since they set up an all-around strategic partnership in 2004. BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-nine large and medium-sized Chinese steel producers reported 5.18 billion yuan (762.46 million U.S. dollars) in aggregate losses in the first four months, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said here Friday.     The 29 producers were among 72 surveyed by CISA, the association's vice chairman, Luo Bingsheng, said.     The 72 companies reported 575.59 billion yuan in revenue, down 18.9 percent year on year, Luo said. They paid 15.42 billion yuan in taxes, down 85.07 percent year on year, Luo said.     Losses were mainly caused by slumping domestic steel prices, Luo said.     Many producers have cut costs, and the production cost of steel dropped 13.75 percent in the first quarter, Luo said.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Thursday that China and Germany should join hands to combat trade and investment protectionism.     The premier made the remark during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which the two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.     Wen said cooperation between China and Germany, both among the world's major economies, is developing smoothly in a variety of fields.     He said the two sides should continue to handle their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, and keep up high-level exchanges. The two nations, Wen said, also should strengthen communications and coordination to push for a healthy and stable development of their bilateral ties.     China, Wen said, always adheres to a win-win strategy in opening to the outside world and insists on the maintenance of a fair and open market environment. He said China would never discriminate against foreign enterprises or products.     The premier said China's determination to cope with climate change is firm, its operations active, and its measures effective. China, Wen said, is ready to enhance collaboration with Germany in developing new and renewable energy and maximizing energy efficiency.     China also will participate in related negotiations and work with other countries to help bring about positive results at the December UN Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Wen said.     Merkel said Germany is very satisfied with the development of China-Germany relations. She said Germany is ready to work with China to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen trade and economic cooperation, and oppose trade and investment protectionism.     Germany also is prepared to jointly deal with the challenges brought about by the global financial crisis and advance bilateral ties, she said.     Merkel said she hoped that the two countries would strengthen communications and jointly tackle the issue of climate change.
