SPRING VALLEY, Calif (KGTV) -- As campuses like Steele Canyon High School in Spring Valley remain closed because of COVID-19 concerns, some parents and students say they’re getting tired of waiting because they want a return to the classroom and sports.“I want to play my sport again. I want to see my friends. I’m a freshman, I want to get that high school experience", says Mason Asvell a student at Steele Canyon High.He wants to play water polo again.Under the current state rules, youth sports can practice as long as they follow the COVID-19 guidelines.What they can’t do is play games, and that’s something Troy Mack doesn’t agree with, that’s why he organized this rally with others parents and students. Mack's daughter plays golf, and he believes the decision to allow games should be based on each individual sport.Mack adds, “I’m just stumped why we can’t make this golf work. There isn’t much of a distant sport than golf.”And this is where the CDC stands on this issue. On their website, it says the risk of a COVID-19 spread increases based on the number of people a participant interacts with, how close they physically are to others, and if they share equipment with multiple players.A spokesperson for the county has said they are looking to the state to provide guidance when it comes to reopening youth sports, which some students say is a waiting game they don’t want to play.Student Kailyn DeGuzman says, “Our mental health is being drained and will continue to be drained if we don’t go back to in person and in school.”And until something changes, the parents ABC 10News spoke with say they’ll continue to find ways to make their voices heard. 1675

SOLANA BEACH (CNS) - A 77-year-old Solana Beach man diagnosed with dementia was reported missing Monday.Uldarico Baquero was last seen near his home in the 600 block of Nardo Avenue about 9 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.Baquero is Hispanic, 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a dark green jacket and gray shorts, the department said.Anyone with information on Baquero's whereabouts was asked to call the sheriff's department at 858-565-5200. 515

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson called the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia store last week "reprehensible" and promised to take action so that it doesn't happen again.A store manager called the police because the two men were sitting in the store without placing an order. They were arrested for trespassing. The customers said they were waiting for another man to arrive. That person arrived at the store as they were being arrested.A Starbucks spokesperson says the manager in the store who called police is no longer working in that store, although she would not comment if she is working at another location.Johnson said there would be more training for staff on the issue of "unconscious bias.""I've been very focused on understanding what guidelines and what training ever let this happen," he said. "What happened was wrong and we will fix it."Johnson had already posted apologies on the company's website. He said the company wanted to "express our deepest apologies to the two men who were arrested with a goal of doing whatever we can to make things right." He said he hoped to meet with the two men in person to make a face-to-face apology. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, hate-related incidents directed towards Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders have risen drastically.According to Stop Asian-American and Pacific Islander Hate, an advocacy group working to raise awareness about the issue, 2,538 have been documented since March.The group, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, says incidents are self-reported, as well as taken from news reports across the country.“Surveys have shown that over three-quarters of Asian Americans are aware and fear racial bias at the moment,” said Russell Jeung, a professor of Asian-American Studies at San Francisco State University, who tracks the incidents for Stop AAPI Hate.Jeung says his research has found the President Donald Trump’s use of the term “China virus” is having a direct impact on the harassment, as 30 percent of the incidents reported say the language used has mirrored the president’s.“We’re seeing vulnerable populations being targeted,” said Jeung. “Women are harassed 2.4 times more than men. Youth make up 14 percent of our cases so that means there’s a lot of school bullying going on, a lot of online cyber-bullying."“We’ve seen incidents of spitting, vandalism, hostility towards Asian-owned businesses during this time,” said Jay Cheng, a member of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.Two months ago four Asian-owned businesses were vandalized and robbed in the city’s Outer Balboa neighborhood, one of San Francisco’s most diverse areas. Windows were smashed and derogatory language was written on several storefronts.“San Francisco is, in many ways, the capital of Asian-America, so this is the last place you would expect to see that type of racism,” said Cheng.Jeung says in Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities across the country, the harassment causes apprehension and pain knowing once an illness hits, these communities get blamed.“It’s not unexpected.
