LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A new study by a UC San Diego Assistant Professor says there is more plastic pollution in the deepest parts of the ocean than previously thought.Assistant Professor Anela Choy spent the last three years studying water samples off the Monterey Bay coast and found the highest concentration of micro-plastics at levels 200-600 meters below the surface."It’s a great problem," Choy says. "Tt’s pervasive and we’re just starting to understand the sources."Choy worked with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to test water samples at varying depths. They also took readings of micro-plastics in the digestive systems of animals at different depths. She says the findings, published Thursday in Scientific Reports, show that ocean pollution is getting worse, no matter how far down you go."Our findings are really important to make us think about how we as humans impact an environment that feels so far away, the deep sea," says Choy.Micro-plastics come from everyday plastic items that end up in the ocean as garbage. Choy says the vast majority of the micro-plastic her team found is from single-use consumer products, like water bottles and plastic bags. She says that's a wake-up call that everyone needs to do more to reduce their use of these types of pollutants."We need to think more carefully about the products we buy, how they’re disposed of and how we can make a positive impact there," says Choy. She says all that micro-plastic is eaten by animals that live in the deep sea. It's also ingested by other animals that pass through the area. As those animals make their way through the food web, the plastic pollution accumulates, eventually ending up in the food on our plates.Choy hopes her study can help lead to more understanding of how we pollute the ocean and how we can fix the problem."We have to know how much is where before we can understand the best actions to take to clean it up," she says. 1954

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police shot and killed a man who fired at officers outside a burning Kansas City home early Monday morning. Investigators said they later found a woman dead inside the house, after first discovering a dead woman outside, according to KCPD.A police spokesperson said several people were involved in a shooting around 2 a.m. In an update at 4:45 a.m., police said officers shot and killed an "active shooter" outside the home.“The suspect came out the house, fired shots at the officers who returned fire, stopping the suspect. The house started smoking. The fire department put out the fire and discovered another body,” explained Captain Lionel Colon with KCPD.Police said the house fire appeared to have been set intentionally but did not provide details on whether it was related to the shooting. It was not immediately clear how the victims died or what led up to the shooting. Police did not immediately identify anyone involved in the incident.A woman who identified herself as the aunt of the man police killed told 41 Action News her nephew killed her niece and the mother of his child. Even eight hours after the shooting, crime scene tape covered a block in each direction around an intersection, not far from the Truman Sports Complex. At one point, police had tape tied to Sarah Jones’s home. She said she got home late from work Sunday night and was still awake when gunshots erupted. She called police and a few minutes later heard another round of gunfire. “I got the kids, told them to get to the lowest point of the house. We were trying to get down to the basement just crawling across the floor. It was very scary,” Jones explained. She said police officers escorted her three children around the crime scene tape to the bus stop Monday morning.  1820

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) — City crews have started emergency repairs to an unstable cave located underneath a busy La Jolla street.Coast Blvd. was closed late Thursday after experts found weaknesses in Cook's Crack, a sea cave underneath Coast Blvd. near Cave St."We're starting to see above ... the looser, weaker material. That's a trigger right off the bat that, 'Oh my God, we don't have the beefy rock bridging across anymore. So that's what got out attention," said James Nagelvoort, city public works director.RELATED: La Jolla streets closed for emergency stabilization of Cook's Crack caveThe discovery came as crews prepared to repair Coast Blvd. Assessors discovered that if too much weight is above the cave or heavy seismic vibrations hit the area, the road could collapse, according to the city.A crew from Texas was called to lead the project, driving overnight to La Jolla Friday.Crews plan to first fill the cave's cracks with an eco-friendly polyurethane mix to strengthen the dirt. The next phase will be to clear out all of the water and fill the cave with a concrete mix.Construction is expected to last about six weeks, closing parts of Coast Blvd. and Cave St.Cook's Crack is located in the area between La Jolla Cove and the popular Cave Store. The strip of road leads down to seaside restaurants and parking for many tourists and residents. The project required the city to quickly close the road before locals realized what the issue was, though businesses and residents were allowed to pass through the area Friday."They said there's been some shift in the road itself," David Heine, owner of nearby Brockton Villa Restaurant, told 10News. "The busiest two weeks of summer, literally ... Obviously safety's the number one concern for any city, and we respect that." 1799

KGTV (San Diego)---Frank Powell says distance learning has been especially hard on his daughter Angelina, who has cerebral palsy. "She cannot learn just giving her an iPad and me teaching her, she has to have one on one contact with a teacher that knows what they're doing," he explained. He believes that for his family the benefits of in-person instruction outweigh the risks during the pandemic.Which is why he was encouraged to hear about San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate's plan to give SDUSD families more options for how kids are taught during the upcoming school year.A statement released by Cate Tuesday reads in part, "As a father myself, I understand the struggle families are going through right now with ensuring their children are receiving a quality education."The plan includes:Offering waivers for in-person instructionCreating open-air classroomsImplementing staggered start timesand providing more resources and financial support for parents who choose to keep their kids home.Although Governor Newsom has said schools can't reopen until the county has been off the state's watchlist for 14 days, there is an option for districts to apply for an exemption that could be granted by county health officials. The exemption only applies to elementary schools.Whether it's through an exemption or other means, parents like Powell say they just want the option to choose. "There's no reason why a classroom can't be adjusted to accommodate the students. So, yes, I would send her and she can wear a mask, she's fine. 1542

Katherine Johnson, the woman who hand-calculated the trajectory for America's first trip to space, turns 100 today. Before the arrival of electronic data processors, aka, computers in the 1960s, humans -- mainly women -- comprised the workforce at NASA known as the "Computer Pool."Black women, especially, played a crucial role in the pool, providing mathematical data for NASA's first successful space missions, including Alan Shepherd's 1961 mission and John Glenn's pioneering orbital spaceflight.Principal among them was Johnson. But her work -- and that of the "Computer Pool" -- barely earned a mention in pop culture space tributes. That changed, thanks to "Hidden Figures," a best-selling novel later turned into an Oscar-nominated movie. 753
