SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report from the Auto Club ranks San Diego as the top travel destination for Southern Californians this Labor Day weekend.According to the report, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Grand Canyon and Santa Barbara also rank among top travel destinations for Southern Californians. The Auto Club is also warning San Diegans not to drink and drive. According to AAA, 31 people were injured in DUI-related crashes last year over Labor Day weekend.Statewide, eight people were killed in DUI crashes last year. “While alcohol-related crash fatalities have dropped in the last three years over this holiday, injuries have risen,” said Auto Club Traffic Safety Manager Anita Lorz Villagrana.“We want to remind everyone to make a plan before celebrating – use a rideshare service, stay at a hotel or someone’s home, or designate a sober driver. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local college professor says her a electric scooter ride ended painfully after the scooter turned off in the middle of the ride.Jenny Mahoney, a professor of biology and kinesiology at Point Loma Nazarene University, was with three friends on scooters in December, headed to December Nights in Balboa Park. She says her friends were on Bird scooters, while she was on a Lime scooter with plenty of charge. The ride came to an end two minutes along Harbor Drive near the airport."I was in the bike lane and went from full speed to a dead stop," said Mahoney.She says the screen went blank as the scooter shut down. She remembers her body slamming into the handlebars and was then thrown off the scooter."A lot of pain. I wasn't able to breathe. Got the wind knocked out of me," said Mahoney.Mahoney says one of her friends crashed into her. He got up and carried her out of the bike lane. She suffered a broken bone in her hand, and a sprained wrist and ankle."You assume when you're on these scooters and following all the safety rules rules, you're going to get to your destination safely, but that didn't happen," said Mahoney.The question now: Has it happened before? Mahoney filed a claim with Lime before hiring attorney Evan Walker. Walker tells 10News he just got another call from a Seattle tourist whose wife remains hospitalized in San Diego from a similar incident with a Lime scooter."My understanding is that there have been numerous complaints of a similar nature made about these devices and that Lime is well aware of these complaints," said Walker.In late February, Lime issued a warning to riders of a technical bug that caused sudden excessive braking, usually downhill. Lime says in those cases, the scooter didn't shut off. While Mahoney doesn't know if those cases are related, she doesn't believe her incident is the only one. "I want them to take responsibilities for these injuries that are occurring ... and I want people to be aware, it's not as safe as they think it is," said Mahoney.A Lime spokesperson declined to talk about Mahoney's incident but issued the following statement: “Our entire global fleet has now been fully updated with the final firmware fix that appears to have eliminated occurrences of excessive braking, and we continue to closely monitor the issue to ensure it is categorically resolved.” 2375

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man and teen were shot in Linda Vista early Friday while visiting the memorial of another local gunshot victim.San Diego Police officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 6500 block of Kelly Street at about 12:30 a.m. Friday. Several witnesses at the scene told officers a man who had been shot was taken in a vehicle that fled the scene.Numerous bullet casings were found in the area.RELATED: Suspect arrested in Linda Vista shooting that left teen deadOfficers headed to Sharp Memorial Hospital to check for a gunshot victim, where they found two men who had been shot. One victim, a 20-year-old Hispanic man, had been shot in the leg and the other victim, a 15-year-old Hispanic male, suffered two gunshot wounds to the buttocks area and one to the leg.Both victim's injuries were considered non life-threatening. Both were uncooperative with police and no suspect information was available, police added.An officer at the scene told 10News the two victims were visiting a memorial set up for 16-year-old Carlos Valdovinos, who was gunned down in the same area in late May. A baseball cap, flowers, and plastic angel could still be seen in the are to two were visiting.The officer said a driver reportedly drove up, leaned out of the vehicle, and shot the two victims before fleeing.SDPD Gang Detectives are handling the investigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local businessman is now accused in a child porn case, several years after he managed to get off the sex offender registry.Along Tokalon Street in Bay Park, there is a sense of disbelief. A neighbor of some 7 years - Joseph Welsh - arrested in Fontana over the weekend.Police say parents confronted him and took his phone after he took photos of girls in bathing suits at a birthday party.Search warrants executed at his home and his business - a Segway rental outlet on Mission Boulevard - netted several electronic devices containing child porn, according to investigators.The neighbors' sense of shock was magnified because of what they didn't know about his past: a conviction in the 1990s in San Bernardino county for possessing child porn, and annoyance of a child.Police say in 2014, the courts deemed him not a danger to the public and removed him from the registry.It's a maneuver many can't understand.An acquaintance of Welsh, 47, told 10News those who worked near him became "creeped out" because he was always photographing surf schools and flying drones on the beach.In one instance, concerns led to an acquaintance to warn a teenager who knew Welsh to stay away from him.To search the California Megan's Law website for registry results, click here. 1308

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A newly discovered comet flew past Earth early on Saturday, giving those who awoke early enough to catch it quite a show.Comet Neowise was spotted by a NASA telescope by the same name on March 27, according to NASA. Since then, the space agency says the comet has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, including Parker Solar Probe, NASA’s Solar and Terrestrial Relations Observatory, the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.NASA says the comet came within Mercury's orbit on July 3, where the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris trail.Neowise, which measures about three miles across, will be visible in Earth's Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it will change course and head toward the outer solar system, NASA says.For the next few days, the comet will be visible about an hour before sunrise in the northeastern sky in the U.S., NASA adds. Depending on local conditions, Neowise may be visible shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12."In its discovery images, Comet Neowise appeared as a glowing, fuzzy dot moving across the sky even when it was still pretty far away," said Amy Mainzer, Neowise principal investigator at the University of Arizona.
