BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- British scientists used bacteria and DNA to build basic components for digital devices in a new research, according to media reports, suggesting biological computers come closer to reality.Digital devices are based on logic gates, fundamental building blocks in silicon circuitry, said Professor Richard Kitney, leading researcher of the research published in the journal Nature Communications, "Without them, we could not process digital information."According to Science Daily, Professor Kitney and his colleagues from the Imperial College London replicated the building blocks using bacteria and DNA, forming biological logic gates, which paved the way for building more complex biological processors in the future.The researchers hoped biological computers can be applied to monitoring human health in the future.They believed that small biological processors, inserted in human bodies, could roam inside the bodies, monitor the health, and correct any problems they found.These biological logic gates are the most advanced created by scientists. But there is still a long way to go to apply them in reality, said Professor Kitney.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- China canceled over one-third of all official ceremonies, seminars and forums last year in a bid to avoid extravagance or corruption in the use of public resources.Some 2,549 such activities proposed by governments or public institutions, or 37.7 percent of the total applications, which were deemed "ceremonial" and "unnecessary," were cut, saving 1.22 billion yuan (about 193.39 million U.S. dollars), said an official statement released Sunday.The statement was issued by the State Council's Office for Rectifying Malpractices, a ministry-level inter-agency supervisory body dedicated to eliminating administrative irregularities and abuse of power in government agencies, public institutions and major service sectors.Last year's inspections focused on activities co-funded by ministries and local governments, the statement said.The Chinese government agreed with the public that the soaring number of official celebrations, seminars and forums would cost plenty of money and manpower and exacerbate corrupt behaviors.In March, the State Council, or China's Cabinet, ordered 98 ministries and ministry-level government organs to make public their budgets and expenditures on official overseas visits, public vehicles and official receptions -- the "three public consumptions" that had triggered widespread public concern.Premier Wen Jiabao also repeatedly urged the country's government agencies to reduce administrative expenses, including cutting the number of meetings and documents printed.Official figures indicate that the country's crackdown on various forms of extravagant spending by officials saved the country 5.7 billion yuan in 2010.A blue book on China's conferences published in November estimated that the total output of the country's conference industry had reached nearly 1 trillion yuan. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Hewlett-Packard (HP) on Tuesday issued a statement to refute some security flaw claims on its LaserJet printers."Today there has been sensational and inaccurate reporting regarding a potential security vulnerability with some HP LaserJet printers. No customer has reported unauthorized access. Speculation regarding potential for devices to catch fire due to a firmware change is false," HP said in the statement.Tech blog "The Red Tape Chronicle" reported earlier Tuesday that researchers from Columbia University found that a feature named "remote firmware update" on HP's Internet-connected LaserJet printers could allow hackers take control of the device by installing malicious software, and even manage the printer to catch fire.In the statement, HP said that its LaserJet printers have a hardware element called "thermal breaker" that is designed to prevent a part of the device from overheating or causing a fire, noting that it cannot be overcome by a firmware change as it was reported.The Palo Alto, California-based company said that the specific vulnerability exists for some HP LaserJet printers it placed on a public Internet without a firewall. It conceded that on Apple's Mac computers and PCs running Linux system, it is possible for a specially formatted corrupt print job to trigger a firmware upgrade.The company said that it is building a firmware upgrade to mitigate the issue and suggested consumers could place printers behind a firewall and disable remote firmware upload on exposed printers.Researchers said in the earlier report that they believed the flaw is not limited to HP printers and millions of printers around the world could be vulnerable to hack attacks.
