EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The pandemic created a surge in food insecurity in San Diego and the purple tier restrictions are making it worse. Neighbors are stepping in to fill the bellies of those in need.In El Cajon a bright yellow wooden box is perched next to the sidewalk. On it a sign reads, "Blessing Box".Inside it's stocked like a mini grocery store, with grains like rice and pasta, beans, canned vegetables and protein. Single serving hot chocolate, tea and oatmeal line the second shelf. On the top shelf, snacks, drinks, and items to round out a meal are ready for the taking.Andrea Roberts heard of a Blessing Box in 2018 on social media and immediately knew she needed one.Her friend had the same intuition and had her husband craft the wooden box. They surprised Roberts by dropping it off on her porch.Roberts painted the box, affixed a stand to it, and cemented the stand in the grass next to her sidewalk in September 2018.Momentum has been growing through social media and the urge to help during the pandemic."Yesterday was jam packed, I had several people come and bring stuff, so much stuff they left the excess on the porch," Roberts said.She lifted her garage door to unveil piles of food and shelves of canned food, illustrating the willingness to give by the community."I'm overwhelmed, really overwhelmed." Roberts said when she put up the box she thought it would be self sustaining, 'take what you need and give what you can.'Since the pandemic, she said, there's been a surge in need and donations.According to the San Diego Hunger Coalition, more than 1,000,000 San Diegans are food insecure.That translates to three out of every ten people in the county don't know where they'll get their next meal."My hope is just that people find a resource where there is no shame no timeline, if you're working and you're barely making it. During a time where a large number of Florida residents are without power in the wake of Hurricane Irma, two Florida men were caught attempting to steal a ,500 utility pole.42-year-old Blake Lee Waller and 46-year-old Victor Walter Apeler were arrested on grand theft charges Wednesday after someone reported seeing them load the pole onto the top of their car, according to the Jacksonville sheriff’s office.A police report says that the two were spotted driving with the pole on top of their vehicle, they were then stopped by officials and arrested.The report says that one of the men told officials that he had to move the pole because it was on the ground so close to traffic lanes, according to the Associated Press.The sheriff's office tweeted a picture of the shirtless men sitting handcuffed on the sidewalk next to the car carrying the utility pole.  895

Donald Trump attended an August 2015 meeting that federal prosecutors believe was central to a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws to help Trump win the presidency, according to a source familiar with the matter.According to court filings, Trump was joined by Michael Cohen, who was his attorney at the time, and David Pecker, the chairman of American Media Inc., parent company of the National Enquirer.During the meeting, the group discussed a plan to shield Trump from potentially damaging stories. Prosecutors say this amounted to illegal donations to Trump's campaign.Trump's attendance was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in a November article. The meeting returned to the spotlight Wednesday when federal prosecutors announced that they agreed not to prosecute AMI for campaign finance violations in exchange for its cooperation.The newspaper reported that Trump asked Pecker what he could do to help his presidential campaign.Federal prosecutors in Manhattan mentioned the meeting when they charged Cohen over the summer with two campaign finance violations. Those crimes related to hush-money payments to two women who alleged affairs with Trump. For his part, Trump has denied the affairs.Prosecutors also described the meeting in the AMI agreement, which became public Wednesday.That document said Cohen, Pecker, and "one or more members of the campaign" met in August 2015. At that meeting, "Pecker offered to help deal with negative stories about that presidential candidate's relationships with women by, among other things, assisting the campaign in identifying such stories so they could be purchased, and their publication avoided."AMI now admits that after that meeting, Pecker agreed to "keep Cohen appraised" of negative stories about Trump. DETROIT, Michigan — At his annual State of the City address last year, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan applauded his police department for continuing to drop the average response time for 911 calls inside the city."It's a far cry from the days when 911 calls averaged 30 minutes," Duggan said to applause. Now, according to police officials, officers arrive on the scene in about 12 minutes, sometimes sooner.But don't tell that to the mother of a young woman who called 911 again and again last month, only to have police show up days later."It failed for us," she said through tears.The mother asked that we conceal her face to protect the identity of her daughter, who she says is the victim of a crime.The trouble started on the afternoon of September 15.  The mother, who we'll call Sandra, was visiting her young adult daughter on Detroit's west side when she heard screaming as she stepped out of her car."I run up to the door because I realized it was my daughter," she said. "She comes to the door and he's behind her, he's attacking her."Her daughter's boyfriend, who she said has been abusive in the past, was pounding her with his fists.  Sandra ran up to the door and called 911. It was 1:29 PM."Detroit 911, what's the address of your emergency?" asked a dispatcher, according to recordings obtained by WXYZ television station."My daughter's boyfriend was beating the (expletive) out of her," she said breathlessly into the phone before providing her address.The dispatcher said she'd send a car that way, but 40 minutes went by and no one showed up.Sandra called again, but this time she received an automated message. She hung up and dialed 911 once more."Another automated message," she said.At 2:17 p.m., she made her fourth call, this time reaching a dispatcher."I already called it in 45 minutes ago and I still haven't had a police officer come yet," she told the woman on the other end of the line. Again she was told officers would be dispatched, and again she waited. No one came.Finally, at 3:01 p.m., she called once more. This time, she asked to speak to a supervisor."I already called it in twice now," she said, "It's been an hour and a half and nobody shows up."The dispatcher responded: "Hold on, let me see what's going on here," before transferring Sandra to a supervisor.No one from DPD, according to the family, showed up on Saturday.Around 5 p.m. that same day, Sandra said, her daughter's boyfriend returned."He had climbed back through her window and attacked her again," she said.Detroit police didn't arrive at the west side home until the following Wednesday afternoon, a full four days and 34 minutes after the first call to 911.Assistant Chief James White made no excuses when he spoke with WXYZ television station about the delay last week."It absolutely disturbs me, if that's actually what happened," White said, adding that the department is still investigating the incident.White said the investigation has "has already found some failures and there will be accountability for those failures."A police spokeswoman tells WXYZ that officers were, in fact, nearby on the Saturday Sandra called 911 and should have been directed to the home. Assistant Chief White says an internal investigation is still ongoing but said everyone deserved a prompt response from 911 in Detroit."She's already been contacted.
