SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This Labor Day, the Little Italy community will celebrate their annual Stickball Tournament, honoring the East Coast past time made popular in several neighborhoods.The sport draws on the area's heritage that began decades ago.Since the 1920s, Little Italy has served as a ethnic business and residential hub. But as the tuna industry declined, about 35% of Little Italy disappeared with it and because of the construction of Interstate 5.But today, locals are working to restore the area to its business and cultural roots. Part of that, is stickball. Little Italy's tournament comes around every Labor Day weekend, giving spectators and players the chance to relive some childhood memories. Players from New York and Puerto Rico come to San Diego to challenge local teams for the right to call themselves king of the block.RELATED: Exploring San Diego: Things to do Aug. 29 - Sept. 1The rules are essentially like baseball, except players use a broom stick, table leg, or any kind of bat, a rubber ball, and bases are typically manhole covers or cars in the street. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thirty years ago, Officer Brian Hardy had an idea. Hardy told his chief, "Chief, I have this crazy idea. Let's put teddy bears in a police car and bring them up to Children's Hospital. I think the kids would really get a kick out of it."Hardy was just a few years into being a member of the Coronado Police Department. He got the idea when, during a visit to Rady Children's Hospital, he noticed the toy collection bin."I asked the nurse at the station there why are there so few toys and she said donations are way down this year. We don't have a lot of toys for the kids in the hospital," said Hardy.Hardy bought the first twelve bears himself. Then, the teddy bear drive started to spread to other law enforcement departments across the county.They have collected as many as 75,000 teddy bears and a huge caravan delivers bears to Rady Children's Hospital every December.Hardy said he'll never forget the impact bringing a little joy to one terminally ill child had on his fellow officers."This little girl was maybe 4, 5 years old and all those cops walked out of there crying their eyes out," said Hardy.A few years later, Hardy found himself on the other side of things when a doctor at Rady told him his 2-year-old daughter's appendix had burst."He said my daughter's very sick she may not make it till morning, but he says, 'We're going to do our best to save her life,'" said Hardy.They did and it happened to be the morning of the teddy bear caravan.Hardy remembered, "It was like an episode of the 'Twilight Zone.' Things were turned around and I was in the hospital and the cops were coming with teddy bears."Hardy has received many thank you notes over the years, but it's what one girl told him a few years ago that has stayed with him."She comes running up full clip and she says, 'You gave me a teddy bear when I was 5 years old,'" Hardy said. He said the young woman now in her 20s told him, "I never forgot that." Now, because of the pandemic, instead of collecting piles of bears, they are encouraging people to donate money to buy bears that go directly to the kids.Officer Hardy is retired now, but still involved and has this message for the many generous donors."If you could see what we see, these children just light up when you bring them these bears," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year, December Nights organizers are opting for a tasty, food-driven event in place of the traditional two-night gathering in Balboa Park."Taste of December Nights" will feature more than 20 food trucks and vendors in Balboa Park, inviting visitors to enjoy a delicious drive-thru event this year. The event will be held from Friday, Dec. 4, through Sunday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.The event is free to attend, but visitors must remain in the vehicles and wear face coverings. Organizers say walk-ups, or people attending on bikes or scooters will not be allowed, as safety protocols amid the pandemic will be enforced.The food truck event will roll into the park's Inspiration Point parking lot, near President's Way and Park Blvd.The event will also feature some giveaways for visitors, including a commemorative Taste of December Nights tote bag filled with some festive items for the first 500 cars each day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three years ago Former San Francisco 49er’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the National Anthem. It started during the 2016 preseason games. The first three games he sat on the bench and then in a game against the San Diego Chargers, he took his first knee during the National Anthem. On Wednesday, Kaepernick recognized the three year anniversary by taking to his Twitter account saying, “Today marks the three year anniversary of the first time I protested systemic oppression. I continue to work and stand with the people in our fight for liberation.” In October 2017, Kaepernick filed a Collusion Grievance against the NFL and team owners In February 2018, they settled the case. Kaepernick has been without an NFL contract since the end of the 2016 season. 810
