We have often underestimated how radical that quest really is, and how our cherished principles challenge systems of intended or assumed injustice. The heroes of America — from Frederick Douglass, to Harriet Tubman, to Abraham Lincoln, to Martin Luther King, Jr. — are heroes of unity. Their calling has never been for the fainthearted. They often revealed the nation’s disturbing bigotry and exploitation — stains on our character sometimes difficult for the American majority to examine. We can only see the reality of America's need by seeing it through the eyes of the threatened, oppressed, and disenfranchised.That is exactly where we now stand. Many doubt the justice of our country, and with good reason. Black people see the repeated violation of their rights without an urgent and adequate response from American institutions. We know that lasting justice will only come by peaceful means. Looting is not liberation, and destruction is not progress. But we also know that lasting peace in our communities requires truly equal justice. The rule of law ultimately depends on the fairness and legitimacy of the legal system. And achieving justice for all is the duty of all.This will require a consistent, courageous, and creative effort. We serve our neighbors best when we try to understand their experience. We love our neighbors as ourselves when we treat them as equals, in both protection and compassion. There is a better way — the way of empathy, and shared commitment, and bold action, and a peace rooted in justice. I am confident that together, Americans will choose the better way. 3934

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — A woman accused of killing her newborn daughter and then tossing the baby over a fence into a neighbor’s backyard was found guilty of first-degree murder.A Douglas County, Colorado, jury handed down the verdict against Camille Wasinger-Konrad Tuesday, according to a release from the 18th Judicial District. The 25-year-old Colorado woman was also convicted of tampering with physical evidence and the position-of-trust murder charge.Wasinger-Konrad was renting a room in a home of a Highlands Ranch, Colorado, family. Early in the morning of Jan. 2, 2018, she gave birth to a girl in her bedroom. She covered the baby’s mouth and nose to stop her from crying so as not to awaken others, the release read.Wasinger-Konrad then carried the newborn downstairs to the back deck. She threw the baby into the backyard of a neighbor, according to prosecutors. The neighbor found the dead child at 9:48 p.m. that night and called the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.“This tiny baby was smothered by her mother, flung over a neighbor’s fence and left to die by the only human she had ever known,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Christopher Gallo said during closing arguments. “This defendant hurled her newborn 11 feet over an 8-foot fence, knowingly consigning her to her death. This little girl died in the cold without the dignity of even a name.”Sentencing is set for Nov. 15. FLINT, Mich. – In a gesture of solidarity, a Michigan sheriff joined a crowd demanding action against police brutality and marched side by side with the peaceful protesters. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson was caught on video joining the crowd that was marching in Flint Township in honor of George Floyd, the black man who died after an officer knelt on his neck during an arrest in Minneapolis. Before the march began, Swanson addressed the demonstrates and said his officers wanted to be with them.“I took my helmet off, laid the batons down,” said Swanson to cheers. “I want to make this a parade, not a protest.”The sheriff wanted to make the point that his officers cared for their community and they understood many wanted to have their voices heard. “These cops love you. Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of Botham Jean.Guyger shot and killed Jean as he sat in his apartment on Sept. 6, 2018. Guyger lived in the same apartment complex at the time and said she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment, thinking it was hers.During the trial, Guyger testified that she entered the apartment with her gun drawn with the intent to "eliminate' what she thought was an intruder. Guyger's lawyers argued, "stand your ground" laws applied in the case.Guyger also apologized during the trial, saying she has asked God for forgiveness and regretted the incident."I wish he was the one with the gun and killed me," she said.
