SAN DIEGO — Police are investigating multiple shootings that erupted in downtown San Diego Monday night.The gunfire was reported around 11 p.m. at several locations in the East Village neighborhood, about three blocks east of Petco Park's tailgate parking lot.A crew for Scripps station KGTV in San Diego was at the scene of one shooting at 15th Street and Island Avenue where several victims were being loaded into ambulances. Two other people suffering gunshot wounds were located near Market Street.No further information about the victims is available at this time.A witness told KGTV that he heard about a dozen gunshots coming from different locations and two vehicles speeding from the scene.It is unknown at this time if there are any other victims. San Diego Police Department Gang units are also on scene.The shooting happened not long after the San Diego Padres wrapped up their game against the Washington Nationals at Petco Park. 1015

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The number of people expressing fear of returning to their home countries when stopped at the U.S. border with Mexico has spiked, according to figures released Monday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.U.S. border authorities fielded 92,959 "credible fear" claims — the initial step toward asylum — in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, up 67 percent from 55,584 the previous year. The "credible fear" claims accounted for 18 percent of all people arrested or stopped at the Mexican border in the latest period, up from 13 percent a year earlier.CBP publicly released the numbers for the first time as more migrants, many of them families and children from Mexico and Central America, seek asylum or other forms of humanitarian protection to gain entry to the U.S. The trend was highlighted by a caravan of more than 6,000 migrants, largely from Honduras, that arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, last month, many hoping to seek asylum across the border in San Diego.Commissioner Kevin McAleenan noted that most asylum claims are ultimately unsuccessful in immigration court and he renewed the Trump administration's call for Congress to address "these vulnerabilities in our immigration system." "The storm system will bring cooler temperatures through tomorrow, and snow above 5,000 feet."Connolly said temperatures will drop into the high 50s to 60s in most of San Diego on Christmas day. SAN DIEGO (AP) — A military judge on Monday took the rare step of removing a prosecutor accused of misconduct from the war crimes case of a decorated Navy SEAL.Capt. Aaron Rugh ordered Cmdr. Christopher Czaplak removed from the case of Operations Chief Edward Gallagher after defense lawyers accused the prosecution of spying on their emails, according to the ruling.The defense asked Rugh to dismiss the case or remove prosecutors because of a surreptitious effort to track defense emails without court approval in an effort to find the source of news leaks.Rugh said it was not in his power to determine prosecutorial misconduct, but there was the possibility of a conflict of interest that required Czaplak to be removed, the ruling said.Rugh has not yet ruled on whether to dismiss murder and attempted murder counts against Gallagher.Last week, Rugh unexpectedly released Gallagher from custody as a remedy for interference by prosecutors.The removal could delay the trial scheduled to start June 10.Republicans in Congress have rallied in support of Gallagher, saying he has been mistreated. SAN DIEGO (AP and KGTV) — Marine Corps officials say charges are pending against 12 Camp Pendleton Marines accused of being involved in smuggling, including driving migrants across the US-Mexico border.The Marines, who are part of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, are in confinement, officials said.Those being held include two Marine riflemen who were stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents on July 3 driving from the border with three Mexicans in the back of a BMW. That led to the additional arrests.
