(KGTV) -- Since 2013, Kitchens for Good has helped fight hunger across San Diego by working with local food backs, created programs to help those with troubled pasts, and now they're adding a baking option to their apprenticeship program.After Kitchens for Good launched their culinary apprenticeship program five years ago, it has led to both success and opportunity. "It's an amazing program here, we are so lucky to be here doing this," said an instructor for their baking program. They added in a baking option to their existing culinary program that launched this month.Their apprenticeships aren't your normal "bake and set" classes. They hope students like Kenneth Donato, take what they learn inside to lead better lives. "Just 3 months ago I was living under a bridge, now my wife and I we're living inside. I'm going to school, I work here, and help them out," said Donato.Directors for the nonprofit said out of their 300 apprentices, 85% landed jobs upon completion. Baking instructor Helen Coyne added, "I see so many opportunities in baking and pastry, and I'm so excited for them to have that." They say adding in a baking program means more students can sign up, in hopes more will get hired.The baking program is a free 20-week hands-on course for those who qualify. 1291

(KGTV) — Mexican authorities say they have located the remains of a Los Angeles firefighter who disappeared near his Rosarito home more than two months ago.Frank Aguilar, a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department, was last seen after heading to his second home in Baja, California, San Diego family members told ABC 10News in September.Mexican authorities reported that human remains were recently discovered, identified as Aquilar.RELATED:LA firefighter possibly kidnapped from Rosarito condo, local family speaks outRearrests made in connection to firefighter who went missing in Baja"Our Department was notified this afternoon that authorities in Mexico determined that human remains recently found there are those of LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic Francisco Aguilar. On behalf of the men and women of the LAFD, we send our deepest condolences to Firefighter Aguilar's family and we stand ready to assist them in the days to come," a statement from LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas read.Last month, two people identified only as Santos "N" and Fanny "N" arrested in connection with Aquilar's disappearance. Aquilar's family told ABC 10News that they believed the female suspect may have been dating the firefighter. Officials have only said that it may have been a violent kidnapping setup. The suspects were found in possession of Aguilar’s bank cards which had been used across Baja. There were also reports that Aquilar's condo had been ransacked, his vehicles were missing, and the scene had been captured on Ring video. 1608

A bipartisan group of mayors urged congressional leaders on Friday to provide funding for local and municipal governments that have struggled amid the coronavirus pandemic.The letters was signed on behalf of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The letter was co-signed by Democratic mayors Greg Fischer of Louisville, Kentucky, and Nan Whaley of Dayton, Ohio, and Republican Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami.“We strongly encourage Republicans and Democrats to come to an agreement on a COVID-19 relief package that will contain the onslaught of the pandemic and promote our economic recovery,” the letter read in part. “We implore our leaders: Do not give up. Do not accept failure. Come together to meet the needs of our citizens and enable a safe economic recovery."As a direct result of the pandemic, our budgets have been hit hard and revenue shortfalls threaten our ability to meet essential needs.
