SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local brewery's decision to use compostable can holders is the latest example of San Diego companies deciding to go green.Pure Project Brewery made the change last month, giving its customers an easier way to take home 4-packs of beer while still being environmentally friendly."You have to make that decision; do I wanna do the right thing, or do I wanna do the cheap thing," says Pure Project Co-Founder Mat Robar. He says every decision his company makes takes the environmental impact into account."It costs us a good amount of money to brew beer with organic and local ingredients, and sometimes it takes a little longer. Ultimately it's the right thing to do," says Robar.The new can holders are made of recycled grain, leftover from the brewing process. They biodegrade in 200 days. And, if they wind up in the ocean by accident, they're safe for animals to eat.Pure is one of the hundreds of San Diego companies emphasizing the planet over profits.Right now, the San Diego Green Business Network lists more than 200 local companies as members.Experts say it can help build a brand, attract a loyal customer base, and also help make money in the long run."The efficiencies of going green has significant business implications," says Heather Honea, the Chair of the Marketing Department at SDSU's Fowler College of Business."If you're trying to build a brand that's meaningful for consumers, you have to speak to the things they care about. Your brand has to be associated with the things they care about," says Honea.In California, that includes environmental impact."If I'm deciding between product a and product b, I'm choosing the product that not only delivers a certain set of quality attributes but also is going to have the impact on my local community or local environment that I think is acceptable," she says.Honea also says that investments in green technology and business practices may cost a lot of money upfront, but they tend to pay themselves off in the long run. She says that's especially true for companies that stay one step ahead of local and state laws.At Pure, they say protecting the environment is their "North Star," a guiding principle for everything they do."It takes a little bit of effort," says Cheyna Swartz, the Tap Room Manager, "But it's definitely worth it." 2331

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who led police on pursuit was arrested early Monday morning after spending 45 minutes on the roof of a Webster home.San Diego police officers attempted to stop a dark colored Kia shortly before 12:30 a.m. on 49th and Federal Blvd. after the driver was seen driving recklessly.The driver crashed into an embankment and pole on Marilou Road, and that's when police said the suspect jumped out and took off running.Police chased the man for several blocks, even jumping fences and running through backyards. The suspect then climb on top of a home, leaping across rooftops trying to get away, but was surrounded.The suspect sat on the rooftop on Brookline street and told officers he would not come down until they put their guns down.The suspect eventually surrendered 45 minutes later. Firefighters were called in to put a ladder up and help get him down.He's being evaluated for DUI and faces felony evading charges. 950

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was arrested and charged with multiple sex crimes involving minors.Chula Vista police said they received anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers on April 9, 2020, “regarding an unidentified adult male suspect, who engaged in sex acts with an underage victim. Investigators were able to identify the suspect and also determine that there were two additional underage victims.”During the probe, investigators identified the suspect, 27-year-old Jaylen Fleer, as a correctional deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.According to CVPD officials, Fleer surrendered to investigators on Wednesday, July 22. After being processed at CVPD headquarters, he was transported to the sheriff’s Vista Jail.Jail records obtained by ABC 10News show Fleer was booked on 15 charges, including oral copulation with a person under 16, luring a minor for a sex offense, and sending harmful material to seduce a minor.Chula Vista police noted that the sheriff’s department “cooperated and assisted with the investigation.”In a statement, the San Diego Sheriff Department said that Fleer was placed on administrative assignment when the department was made aware of the possible incident and that because of the seriousness of the allegations, his authority as a peace officer was taken away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local family says they were fighting to get back thousands of dollars in family heirlooms. They only got answers, they say, after Team 10 stepped in. "It makes me sick. It's really emotional," said Jill Robertson of Escondido. We interviewed Jill with her son, Jon, and his girlfriend, Megan Gielczyk. Jill and Jon shared with us a few of the limited old pictures they could find of their family heirlooms.She pointed to a photo of her late father wearing a ring. It was one of the pieces of sentimental jewelry that she said her family had given to local jeweler Mark Himmel to redesign. Jon said he was planning to use one of the rings to propose to his girlfriend but he added that the proposal and engagement were put on hold because Himmel hadn't returned their jewelry. Records verify that Himmel operates Sa-Ling Jewelry Imports Incorporated in San Diego. The Robertsons said it was Aug. 12 when they gave him a down payment to redesign thousands of dollars in family jewelry. They said they had expected to have the job completed in two to three weeks, but we met with them almost two and a half months after they wrote out a down payment check."There's evasion. He's constantly evading," said Jill. Jon's girlfriend, Megan, told us Himmel hung up the phone on her. San Diego police confirm they showed up to Himmel's home, where he operates his business, to try to get answers. However, no one came to the door. Two days after Team 10 left Himmel a voicemail, the Robertsons said they got a priority mail package with some of the heirlooms, but not all of them. They said there was no explanation for the wait time or behavior. It was early last week when Team 10 started making calls and leaving voicemails for Himmel. None of Team 10's calls were returned.We made a second attempt to visit him in-person this Thursday and were successful. He told us he's sending out the remaining pair of earrings on Thursday and he will soon send a remaining gold nugget."It took two months this time because I handmade the ring," he told us.He spoke to Team 10 later over the phone. He said he was responsive to the Robertsons about his slight delays. He sent us what he said was a screenshot of a text exchange from mid-September when he notified them that the job would likely take another three weeks and they thanked him.  A representative with the California Franchise Tax Board notified Team 10 that Sa-Ling Jewelry Imports Inc. in San Diego was suspended on 07-03-2017 for unpaid liability with a current billable balance of ,336.81. The Better Business Bureau verified that the Robertsons filed a complaint. The BBB reported to Team 10 that it's the first complaint against Sa-Ling Jewelry, which has been in business for many years.  2810

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there.
