SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The latest surge in coronavirus cases has led Girl Scouts San Diego to cancel all in-person gatherings, meetings, and events for the rest of 2020. The decision comes just three weeks after the resumption of in-person troop meetings had been approved.Christa Sherman, Troop Support Manager for Girl Scouts San Diego, told ABC 10News the decision is the responsible one and is widely supported by troops across the county. "Our Girl Scouts are so resourceful and they really want to do what’s best for their communities, for their schools, for their troops," Sherman said.Both the national and local organizations have been building up their ability to support virtual meetings since the beginning of the pandemic. Troop leaders have access to lesson plans and videos. They can bring necessary materials to drop off at scout's homes before the meetings."We’ve had better attendance at meetings, which is crazy, virtually then sometimes when we were meeting in person," said Elise Hilliard, a troop leader in the South Bay.Even camp-outs are now being done virtually. Kids set up tents in the yard or build forts inside. They set up their mobile device so they can share the experience with their friends. Hilliard said the experiences may be different, but that hasn't changed the Girl Scouts mission. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 21-year-old killed while driving across the trolley tracks near Encanto has been identified.The San Diego County Medical Examiner says Alex Garza, 21, was believed to be distracted, possibly on the phone, when he reportedly tried to drive his Toyota Prius across the tracks just before midnight at 60th Street and Imperial Avenue. The vehicle was struck by a trolley before it became pinned against a poll.San Diego Police and fire units responded to the scene where Garza was pronounced dead. 525
