SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the unknown future of in-person education, the Cajon Valley Union School District has continued to welcome kids to campus since March, but not as students. They’re offering child care.“They’re getting topics that they typically wouldn’t always get during the school year. Fun, light topics more like a summer camp but still learning,” said Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Karen Minshew.She said their priority is giving a safe place to stay for children as their parents go to work.Gov. Gavin Newsom and California health officials have laid out a plan stating counties have to be off the state’s monitoring list for 14 days before they can reopen schools. Minshew said even with this announcement, their current setup falls within the guidelines.“Nothing had changed in terms of the model for child care so yes there’s was information for schools and what’s possible for schools but not child care,” she said.Danica Mitchell has a son who will be starting first grade in the fall. She dropped him off at Chase Avenue Elementary School for the summer program and said she’s happy with the steps the school has taken to keep the students safe.“I’m emotional because I’m an essential worker so both my husband and I work and we need to work to support our family so it’s very important that my child have somewhere to go,” said Mitchell.Minshew said they are considering four different models for the fall term but no matter what happens regarding education and policies for having students on campus, they will be there to offer childcare no matter what. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego officials Wednesday named former men’s head basketball coach Lamont Smith as the college employee involved in the campus admissions bribery scandal known as “Operation Varsity Blues.” The initial indictment, released earlier in March, alleged real estate developer Robert Flaxman paid about 0,000 to get his son in the “side door” with the help of a USD coach. Federal documents claim an FBI witness and Smith worked to accept Flaxman’s son, an Industrial Systems Engineer Major, as an athletic recruit, although he did not play basketball. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two hundred elementary students are now the proud owners of new bikes, thanks to inmates at the Donovan Correctional Facility.For the fourth year, the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center teamed up with the correctional facility to make the event happen. The inmates raised over ,000 to pay for the bikes and accessories, with some donating money they earn working. “Certain decisions got me where I am, but better decisions that I made since then put me exactly where I am, in the fire department and on my way out the door,” said prison inmate, Andrew Breckenridge.Breckenridge was one of two inmates invited to attend that actual event at the Kroc Center. He’s being released from prison in 10 days. “It feels great, I mean I can’t describe the feeling, seeing the smiles on these kids faces,” said Breckenridge.Children who received bikes were chosen based on merit and good behavior at school. 933

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across California, a record-breaking 3.7 million acres have already burned in more than 8-thousand wildfires this year.Both Cal Fire San Diego and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are preparing to respond to potential fire disasters, as dangerous weather conditions return to San Diego County.“We know the potential is there,” said Thomas Shoots, a public information officer for Cal Fire. “We’re holding all our firefighters on duty, and we’re staffing on every piece of equipment to make sure we’re covered, we’ve brought on contract dozers.
