SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A proposal to build a four-story, 48 unit apartment complex in Carmel Valley has riled some neighbors, to the point where hundreds of them have now signed a petition asking the San Diego City Council to abandon the project.The complex would be at 10211 Rancho Carmel Drive, just off the 15 Freeway near Ted Williams Parkway. It's less than a half-acre. Right now, a two-story parking structure sits on the plot of land.Plans from developer New Pointe Communities say they would build the complex on top of the parking garage, essentially creating a six-story building.People who live in the nearby Provencal community say it doesn't fit the neighborhood. They've started an online petition to stop it."That’s pretty tall, and that just doesn’t fit in" says Eric Von Waldner, who signed the petition."It’s going to take away our view, take away our privacy. There will be balconies looking right at us. I just don’t like the idea of it," he adds.Von Waldner says neighbors worry the added units will overwhelm the area's electrical, water and sewage grid.They also say it will cause traffic headaches at the signal light on Rancho Carmel Drive and Provencal Place."You got Starbucks over there. You got people that live in my community. If you add 48 more units, it’s going to be crazy," says Von Waldner.They plan to send the petition to District 5 City Councilmember Mark Kersey, asking for a new plan. The Council already has an agreement with New Pointe to sell the land.“A number of residents have contacted me about the proposed project on Rancho Carmel Drive, and I continue to welcome feedback from my constituents. Any redevelopment plans for the site will go through an extensive public process with numerous opportunities for input from the community,” Kersey said in a statement to 10News.According to Eric Edelmen, the chair of the Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Council, the developer still has to submit a formal proposal to the city. They also have to ask for the area to be re-zoned to allow the extra units.Right now, Edelman says the land is only zoned for eight units.He says the last time they heard from New Pointe was at a November 14th meeting. The Community Council would have to approve the proposal first. Then it would need to pass through the Planning Commission and finally the full City Council. 2361

San Diego (KGTV)- It’s been one year since the deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas, killing three members of the same family. The husband and father of two of the women is still calling for changes along the beach.Dr. Pat Davis says this past year has been tough after losing wife Julie Davis, daughter Annie Clave and sister-in-law Elizabeth Charles.The family was out for a day at the beach last August when suddenly the bluff gave out.“It was important for me that this kind of accident never is able to happen to any other family,” says Davis.Davis says since the tragic accident, there has been little change at Grandview beach. “There’s very few new signs warning people about these cliffs.”Davis is calling on local and state leaders to stabilize the bluffs. He’s hoping a new bill will help. S.B. 1090 offers solutions like sand replenishment. It currently sits in the Senate.“We got over 4,000 signatures in one month of people supporting the bill.”In the meantime, Davis is thanking the community for its continued support. A park bench sits at the top of Grandview Beach, honoring his family members.“Not that there’s an easy side of learning to live with the loss and one of your children but, certainly family support and community support has been a great help in allowing my family to move forward.”Davis says community members also came together to place another memorial bench in their neighborhood. 1423

SAN DIEGO( KGTV) - A Navy veteran has earned a spot with Federal Fire San Diego, getting hired the day she graduated from the fire academy.More competitive, Federal Fire is the civilian department which oversees San Diego naval bases.After serving her country, rookie Caitlyn Argeris says she wanted to serve her community.“She was hungry for it, we saw the fire get lit, and we wanted to nurture that," said Chief Mary Anderson.While still on active duty, the young mother took EMT classes at night“I wasn’t sure if I’d be strong enough, fast enough, have the mental aptitude or physical capabilities," said Argeris. "But you push through it and keep going."Chief Anderson says Argeris is the second Navy veteran they've hired on the spot after graduation.Anderson is on a mission to recruit more women into her department. They're at 2 percent, compared to the national average of about 5 percent.“Women bring something unique to the fire service: compassion," said Chief Anderson. "Once they realize they can do it, they catch that bug as well.”Argeris hopes her story will inspire other women to consider joining the fire service. 1142

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Nearly 200 realtors and elected officials in San Diego kicked off an innovative program aimed to reduce access to dangerous opioids. Volunteers went door-to-door, handing out information cards and special plastic bags for residents to properly dispose of their unneeded and expired prescription drugs.For the fourth year in a row, the number of San Diegans who died from unintentional drug-related deaths went up. To counter the increasing number of opioid deaths, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Safe Homes Coalition and the San Diego Association of Realtors launched the “Keep Kids Safe” program.10News followed a group of volunteers who were assigned to walk around the Bay Ho area. “I’m not here to sell a home. I’m here to introduce an opportunity to save lives," real estate broker, Robert Weichelt said. In the last couple of years, he has sene a disturbing trend in his industry. “We had people coming to our open houses, going in to take medicine out of the medicine cabinet," Kevin Burke, CEO of the San Diego Association of Realtors said. Thieves would pose as prospective buyers, then steal prescriptions from the medicine cabinets when they tour the property. That is why more nearly 200 realtors volunteered their Saturday to spread the word about disposing of unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Flushing pills down the drain causes pollution. Instead, they are distributing 100,000 special prescription bags that could be taken to one of 20 disposal sites in San Diego County, so they do not land in the wrong hands. Sandy Nolan lost her son, Jerry, to a heroin overdose almost 11 years ago. His gateway drug was inside of their home. “It all started with prescription drugs," Nolan said. That is why she is so passionate about eliminating access to dangerous opioids. “When you’re done with that prescription, and you don’t need it anymore, get it in that bag, take it to the disposal spots, and get it out of your house, right away," Nolan said. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man who illegally demolished a San Francisco house designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra was ordered this week to rebuild it exactly as it was.The city Planning Commission also ordered Ross Johnston to add a sidewalk plaque telling the entire saga of the house's origins in the 1930s, its demolition and replication.It's not known whether he will follow through.
