SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Civil rights activists called for change Monday following the publication of a cartoon in the San Diego Union Tribune the group described as an “insulting image”. Rev. Shane Harris, president of the People’s Alliance for Justice, and other San Diego leaders held a news conference after a meeting with UT publisher Jeff Light.San Diego Union Tribune cartoonist Steve Breen created a picture of authors James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, and actor Jussie Smollett, with the title “Famous African American Story Tellers," according to Harris' email. The image was published Friday, Harris said."It was egregious to us all," Harris said at his news conference.Smollett is accused of falsely reporting being attacked by two masked men in Chicago. He reportedly told police his attackers yelled racial and anti-gay slurs and referenced President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, according to the Associated Press.Harris demanded last week that Smollett be fired from his role in the show, "Empire."Monday, Harris said Breen apologized for the cartoon. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Businesses are bracing for Governor Gavin Newsom's announcement Monday after San Diego has been on the state's watch-list since July 3, due to a surge in coronavirus cases.Newsom could announce indoor activities, like arcades, restaurant dining, movie theaters and museums will be shut down to contain the spread.This news comes as San Diego restaurants faced a volley of changes over the past four months."I think that the only thing that is constant is the change," Chief Brewing Officer Mike Hess said from his Imperial Beach brewery.He said the lucky thing about most of his locations is they have outdoor space, so they can shift more easily. Barnett said they have been doing take out since the beginning of the pandemic, but never reopened for dine in.She said the small space at her business and horror stories of other restaurants and bars dealing with enforcing social distancing, wearing a mask and employees testing positive with the virus, helped her stick to her guns.On Friday, she posted this on Instagram, "After much consideration, Small Bar will be closing for the entire month of July (possibly longer). When the global pandemic was declared almost 4 months ago, we decided to quickly switch gears and continue to serve our community as thoughtfully and safely as possible. Unfortunately, Americans both near and far don't seem to be listening as closely to science as we are. We no longer deem our services "essential". We care about our community and feel the best move right now is to take a step back for a few weeks. In the meantime, we will be working on our footprint and how we can safely reopen later. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cheer on floats, marching bands, and colorful cars will roll down the streets of Hillcrest and Balboa Park in July for the annual San Diego Pride Parade. The parade, which is San Diego’s largest single-day civic event, attracts some 250,000 people every year. Marching begins at the Hillcrest Pride Flag at University Avenue and Normal Street. The parade moves west down University, turns south on Sixth Avenue, left onto Balboa Drive, and ends at Quince Drive. The parade is free for spectators, but you’ll want to bring cash to buy water or food from one of the businesses along the route. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Authorities are investigating a threat to the San Diego County Administration Center by a former county employee.The specifics of the threat and how it was made was not immediately clear but the threat was being taken "very seriously," Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer said in a letter to county employees.The employee, who was not named, no longer works with the county.RELATED: San Diego Unified School District, San Diego police outline school safety effortsSan Diego Sheriff's Department was notified, made contact with the person, "and took appropriate action to minimize the threat." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As reports surfaced that the Alliance of American Football would suspend all league operations, its teams — and fans — were left in a state of limbo.Fans searching for tickets to the San Diego Fleet's April 14 game at SDCCU Stadium against the Arizona Hotshots were met with a screen reading, "Oh-no! These tickets went fast and we're unable to find more right now."Calls to season ticket lines and links on the team's website went unanswered and returned no results Tuesday.
